Actually I'm pretty sure they died within seconds of each other.

And fark them for traumatizing anyone on that railroad. Load yourselves up on sleeping pills and alcohol.

The stress of deteriorating health was weighing down heavily on the couple, who were both 59-years-old, as Mrs Myatt was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm in late January.

So you expected your wife to immediately bounce back from a BRAIN ANEURYSM? And since that didn't happen you decide to kill yourselves 2 months later? It can take a couple years to get over that shiat (former boss had an aneurysm years ago, still has some trouble but overall very functioning).

If she was as incompetent as they describe, it doesn't even sound like she had a choice to go in front of the train.

Yes, some may bounce back after jumping in front of a train, but it generally will not do them any good as it will often result in a bigger mess.

And you're right.  Suicide is often the penultimate in selfishness, doing it this sort of way is doubly so.

Of course they jumped in front of a moving train, do you have any idea how long it takes to die if you jump in front of a stopped train?

Sometimes 50 years or more.

My mom had an aneurysm 3 years ago and she may never be back to the mental state she was before that happened, but she gets on pretty well. It's no reason to murder/suicide.

While this method is douchey, asking miserable people to stick around because you sad is more selfish than being miserable and ending it.

so... since they were both 59... they married pretty much right at meeting?
shotgun wedding?

Troopers will also be staging a reconstruction of the crash to see if the train slowed at all before hitting the long-married couple.

Why?

A couple in upstate New York have killed themselves in an apparent joint suicide by jumping in front of a freight train on Sunday

So, what three, maybe four?

/I know it would suck to be them, but a trainload isn't anymore than a carload.

I believe in the quality of life, that when a person reaches such a point where there is no options left that they may decide to opt out of it all.   I'm not saying, "oh I lost my job, let me kill myself".  I'm talking about incurable conditions (other than the human condition).  when there is no help but a slow, lingering death or something worse than death (a living one).   It is a person's intrinsic right to end it all.  Sleeping pills are not a certainty, and one may have live or worse been charged and spent their life in prison for doing what they felt was the only way out.

I see a bond of love, I hope it to be and not the end of some undiagnosed mental illness.  My great grandparents were fortunate, dying within days of eachother.  My great uncle and his wife not so much, he passed quickly but she stayed. In the end she was alone, in great pain and asking me to end it.  Tears still well up in my eyes when I think about it.  I didn't help her and I regret that.

Yeah. Penultimate is a funny word. We seem to wish it to mean more than ultimate when in reality it means almost but not quite ultimate. Next week, we'll debate flammable versus inflammable.

Thats waht I was thinking too. Now the train engineer is going to have nightmares for a long time. Pills, booze, running car in the garage for extra measure and you can still have an open coffin funeral. I think just the other day a couple in NY jumped off a bridge together. Weird world.

It's not likely she would ever bounce back.  I do agree she didn't have a choice but this is basically a mercy killing/suicide.

Often, yes.  I'm not sure it was in this case, though.  He didn't want to see his wife suffering anymore, that was more important to him than his own life.

That's where I stand on the subject, but peeing on the toilet seat is reason enough to move suicide to third.

I used to think that suicide would be a better option than wasting away physically and/or mentally once you hit a certain point.  That point has moved farther toward that downward spiral as I, and people I know get closer to it.  The selfishness also factors in.  It seems like such a waste to just kill yourself.  It would be nice to go all Gran Torino and make it worth a little more.
