The correct pronunciation is actually SHURRR-burt. Some people believe that they are pronouncing it "correctly," (i.e., with an heir of sophistication) by saying "shur-bay," but they could be more wrong. It's like saying "Jag-you-are" instead of "Jag-war;" there's really almost no reason to not punch someone who does that in the face. If you want to class up your order, you might effect a slight Yankee clip, say it as "Shore-bay," and that's fine. When all's set and done, it's the same thing. But like with so many things in life, people just want to get snooty. And what's sad is that people of this elk probably lack the capacity to enjoy a sherbet, anyway. That's the sad thing about snobs -- for all intensive purposes, they're incapable of liking anything. All they care about, their upmost desire, is to impress everybody with they're worldly knowledge. But they themselves never allow themselves to be impressed; they cling to the notion that being "impressed" by things makes them, somehow, lesser. Normal. It's very ironic in an ironic sort of way. Say la vee, as the French say. "Life is sad."
