Why not just put it in the microwave to kill the bugs, like I do with my month old tuna salad.

Hot sauce and beer is enough to kill the germs in oysters......

I haven't gotten sick yet so it must be working.

Dozens of scientific studies have shown that irradiated food is safe for human consumption, and that no radioactive material has leaked outside any U.S. plant, according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Now that right there is a bunch of happy horseshiat.

Really,  I'd like to know what US food irradiation facilities have leaked radioactive material.

This is why I fish in the Columbia River. Thanks to leaking tanks at Hanford, the fish are already irradiated. I can go all Bear Grylls on them and eat them raw, without gutting them!

But irradiating food creates free radicals.

And free radicals are dangerous and ghostwrite books for Kenyan overlords and stuff.

Theres a reason there s backlash on using this on meat.

I recall reading about it in Fast Food Nation...

Having a sterilization process will incentivize line workers to speed up the kill/disassembly line.  Thereby increasing the odds there is fecal or other contaminations.  Put succinctly:  I don't want to be served shiat with my meat.

If you like hamburgers, the process virtually ensures you're already eating cow shiat. The question is whether it should contain any bacteria.

That's not egalitarian, though.
Wikipedia: "It is defined either as a political doctrine that all people should be treated as equals and have the same political, economic, social, and civil rights "

It is in no way synonymous with "politically balanced" just the assertion that there are no such thing as distinct social classes of people.

I bet a hospital leaks more radiation in trash. I remember when the dump found several barrels of radioactive waste and it was traced to cancer treatment and the disposal company trying to save money. Then it happened again. They ended up spending a pretty penny to scan trash trucks at the gates cause it was cheaper than dealing with the waste.

Just ask Wikipedia.

1982 - International Nutronics of Dover, New Jersey spilled an unknown quantity of radioactive cobalt solution used to treat gems, modify chemicals, and sterilize food and medical supplies. The solution spilled into the Dover sewer system and forced shutdown of the plant. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was only informed of the accident ten months later by a whistleblower. In 1986 International Nutronics was fined $35,000 and one of its top executives was sentenced to probation for failure to report the spill.

There are 3 main culprits for this. 2 are where the true root of the problem lies, and the third joined the party a little late, but has helped preserve this thinking past its shelf life. These are in order from worst offender to least, IMHO.

The first group is the US government. After WWII, and with the start of the Cold War, we were assured of two things: 1. Radiation is bad, mmmmkay? 2. The Russkies are just waiting for they day when they can lay waste to the entire planet using(Ready for it?) nuclear weapons. We all knew that Russia was gonna nuke us any day through the 70's and 80's...

The second group is the entertainment industry. This isn't really their fault, since in order to make stuff that is exciting, you have to play on someone's fears. Nobody is going to watch a slasher movie that doesn't have a big strong psychotic with a knife. Nobody is going to watch a movie in the early nuclear age unless some kind of bomb test makes ants turn into giants. Our fears have to come into play to make these movies work.

Put those two together, and the third group is the one set of people who carried it through the 70s and into 2014. The eco-warrior, the nuclear protester. They use a combination of misinformation and real issues and concerns. They are right just often enough that not only do they believe all of what they're selling, but a lot of fence sitters come to their side. They are the ones who were raised on the diet of false or over-hyped radiation stories more than anyone.

As a result of this, no mater how it's used, the word "radiation" makes people lose their shiat, even though it means far more than they think it does.  And they still have enough influence to gnash their teeth and wail.

2014-04-28 05:17:18 PM
In recent years, the advocates have increasingly focused on a separate concern: that manufacturers using irradiation will slack off on other vital safety measures designed to keep pathogens out of food in the first place.

We should ban birth control because it encourages risky sexual behavior in young women.
