Don't let him get too deep.  Or Paul Simon might assault him.

Do Iowians, Iowans, Ioweenies, people from Iowa do their polar plunges in late April?

"I thought I had gone out plenty far when I leapt head first. I just hadn't," said Nilson.

What happened to a good old fashioned cannon ball?

All for a 5 month old kid. It'll take him much much longer than 5 months to heal. Maybe he'll never heal.

The challenge calls on people to take a polar plunge with a couple friends

Sigh... I really miss proofreaders, editors and competent journalists.

"I couldn't signal them I wasn't messing around," said Nilson. "I started seeing highlights of my life."

I'd prefer to start seeing highlights of Brad Pitt's life. Especially the "farking Angelina Jolie like crazy" part.

Despite what subby wants you to believe, it wasn't a polar plunge, it appears to be a neknominate (or whatever that stupid meme is) plunge.

Fark you subby, this should've had the sad tag, not dumbass. Man takes time out of his life to raise money for a little boy and gets injured. That's not dumbass. Dumbass is when you butt chug too much Franzia and get hospitalized with alcohol poisoning.

when giving to Charity's just sign the damn check, and skip the running, jumping and all other types of shenanigans

I've never understood the verb-for-ailment things. Unless the verb is research then yes it's totally ok to just give money so someone else can research it.

It's typically an attempt to show dedication to the cause and inspire others to donate as well. For something SIGNIFICANTLY nerdier and nonphysical, check out the Awesome Games Done Quick marathons where they essentially speed run video games for charity. They've raised a significant amount of money doing it.

Jumping head first into anything except a pool where you know the depth and can spot obstructions is asinine and adults should know better. That being said I wish no ill will on this guy and hope he recovers and teaches people about water safety and the dangers of being an idiot.

Dumbass most definitely describes diving headfirst in to water of unknown depth, regardless of the reason for going in.

Now there's an idea. We could turn over the entire global economy to charity and more charities for the ones that had helped before. All the world's labour going towards raising funds and that other thing they raise that's like funds but doesn't actually accomplish anything other than making the person doing it feel good about themselves. What's it called? Oh yes, awareness, that's it.

Maybe he could join up with that guy on television, Charles Krauthammer, and they could both teach about the dangers. Chuck, Cole and the Consequences.

y'know, it's fascinating how well the body can protect with reflexes, given the slightest prior warning. especially compared to how it injures when expectations are wrong right up until injury.

When I was in high school I had some triplet girls that lived by me.  One day at their lake house they were sitting down pretending it was deep so a friend would jump in... He dove.  Broke some vertebrae and had to wear a neck brack for a year or two, after he was well enough to return to school.

I was deep sea fishing off the coast of Honduras and watched one of the mates dive into the water which I assume was at least a few hundred feet deep. He came back to the surface without any movement and seconds later a manatee floated up as well. Apparently, he dove head first into a half ton marine mammal's head and that was enough to knock him out, knock the manatee out, and leave him with a severely sprained neck. The manatee recovered and swam away before we got him into boat.
