Must be a generational thing. I love Animal House, its one of my favorite movies. I've yet to see any Will Farrell movie that even gets a chuckle from me.

Belushi deserved a better film though.

People remember this as a "John Belushi" movie, when he was just a supporting player in an ensemble cast. I doubt his screen time totals more than 10 minutes.

/the "stars" of the film were those well-known household names Tom Hulce, Stephen Furst, Peter Riegert, and Karen Allen

markfara: wiwille: I saw that for the first time a year ago. Didn't laugh once sadly. I'm sure it was pretty edgy for it's day.

Not really. It's a very overrated piece of cinema. Nearly as overrated as John Belushi himself.

Trolls or people who are no fun at parties?

I thought she was kinda cute

The Curse of 'Animal House': If you showed your boobies in the film, your acting career was doomed to be prematurely truncated.

Lisa Bauer ("Shelly Dubinsky"): was her Hollywood debut and she never acted in another film again

Sarah Holcomb ("Clorette DiPesto"): was also her Hollywood debut; she went on to do "Caddyshack" and 2 low-budget films, then dropped out of acting altogether

Mary Louise Weller
("Mandy Pepperidge"): had a few minor credits under her belt before 'Animal House', did a few one-off guest spots on single episodes of a few t.v. series and two more inconsequential movies, and dropped out of acting permanently by 1983.

(Fun bonus trivia: Martha Smith ("Babs") originally read for the "Mandy" role, but objected to doing the topless scene, despite having previously been a Playboy Playmate.)

I like Old School, but Frank the Tank is no Bluto.

No love for Tim "Otter" Matheson? His role was as big as the others'.

The point is, none of those people were "well-known".  Aside from Belushi, Donald Sutherland would've been about the only recognizable name, and it isn't like the general populace was champing at the bit for "the new Sutherland flick".  They had a current, recognizable name, a good script, and they made it pretty cheaply, partly because Belushi liked Robert Cray and some of the bands that played up and down I-5.  They made it at the U of Oregon and surroundings, much of which could still pass for 1962, even then.  I think all the money they saved went toward hiring Kevin Bacon.

mjbok: I saw Animal House and Caddyshack when the whole VHS/Beta war was going on.  Many people died in that war to buy us 240i home video.  Anyway as a youngster I laughed my ass off at these films.  Same with Blazing Saddles.  None of them have aged very well.  Caddyshack holds up the best of the three, but still it, like the others, are products of their time and aren't that great without the benefit of nostalgia.

//Were groundbreaking in their own ways, but no one references Trip to the Moon or The Great Train Robbery when talking about films to watch.

Caddy Shack had Ted Knight and Rodney, two pros.
