It's a deliberative body. This is going to happen. Look at committee appointments in our own legislatures.

I love how Farklibs like to defend the most misogynistic and hateful cultures while condemning Israel and accusing the Republicans of a 'War on Women'

I wish you guys could give me some hints on how to deal with cognitive dissonance.

The UN: The same people who put Congo (genocide, anti-gay), Cuba (dictatorship), Pakistan (anti-gay, women, non-muslims,etc), Russia (anti-gay), Saudi Arabia (execute gays, punish rape victims, other violations), and the UAE (pretty much similar to SA on those issues) on the Human Rights Council (and an at one time Qaddafi's Libya was on the council and chaired it).

Because you can't spell UNETHICAL without UN

I dunno, those countries do sound pretty familiar with what human rights abuses look like. Maybe it's an aspirational thing, to shame them into better compliance? I thought every decision with real impact came out of the Security Council anyway, or is that not accurate?

I'm not understanding you exactly. Here's how this goes. You kill a Iranian Intelligence Ministry official, for any reason, your likely to executed. Not that anyone in their right mind would defend Iran, we are simply insulting the intelligence of the headline writer for their misleading headline.

On Tuedays, Wednesdays, and every other Thursday, the UN is a bunch of spineless weenies who couldn't influence a cat to take a nap on a warm sunny day.  On Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays, they're a bunch of tyrants who are ruling the world with an iron fist.  This tyranny is subliminal, liminal, and superliminal.  On Sundays and every non-weenie Thursday, they just chill and watch old movies on cable and maybe make some snacks.

The portion you quoted shows the poster was correct. She was not convicted of "being raped." It may have been a sham conviction, but the poster was right. And he/she wasn't even remotely defending Iran. Admit it; you just really wanted to go off on someone for defending Iran and you didn't want to wait until someone actually did it. I call that lazy.

As for the article, I remember several years ago when an employer of mine wrote a letter to the editor in support of some Palestinian cause or other to the local paper. CAMERA picked it up, and suddenly we were all getting incredibly violent, weirdly sexual death threats from out of state on our voicemails. Good times.

Pro choice, pro death penalty, VA should be contracted to hospitals instead of being run by the Feds as they do a horrible and cost ineffective job of providing care, would like to see the military used for more productive means like infrastructure replacement and other stuff, instead of their current roles, when they aren't actually out shooting bad guys.

At this point reducing the number of military employees when there's no jobs for them to go to just means increasing welfare and unemployment. These are highly skilled employees who should be able to contribute.

Also, NPR should stay out of news as they can't help but be partisan. The other content they provide is cool

How long ago was the stoning in question?

According to the wiki, it hasn't been done since 2002, and was removed as a potential punishment in 2008.

The list of countries still doing it is alarming, especially Brunei, which looks like it recently ADDED it as a punishment.

There actually is, from what I remember from something on NPR years ago, a strange logic behind this, in that some at the UN believe by making some countries with horrible track records on an issue participate in committees, it puts them in the spotlight and the hope is they feel pressured into changing their policies to bring them more in line with the rest of the civilized world. I don't think it will work in the case of Iran on the issue of women's rights, but that's the theory some subscribe to.

It kind of makes sense, in that there's not much in the way of enforceable international law. Shame/prestige is about the only somewhat effective motivator in play as far as I understand UN workings.

It's not the UN as an institution that places nations in councils and commissions; it's the combined 190ish member nations (i.e. all of us) that elect them through their UN representatives. And the placements are not meant to be rewards in recognition of great jobs, it's a duty all nations have signed up to fulfill on a temporary, rotating basis.

OK, so Iran doesn't actually stone people to death anymore as far as I can tell. CAMERA just used an older photo because that's how they roll. The woman in question is apparently still scheduled to be hanged, if she hasn't been already, because that's how Iran rolls.
