Atlanta-bound cell has weakened, warning expired, still showing some rotation and could re-strengthen at any time. 40 miles from downtown, FYI.

Confirmed tornado southwest of Crystal Springs, MS.

It seems the tornado missed the radar in Brandon, which is a very good thing.

No kidding. That could have been so much worse. A little earlier that day and it would have hit the crowd leaving the Georgia Dome.

The aftermath of a tornado that hit downtown Atlanta a few years back, I believe.

Destroyed the corner of the lofts one of my friends used to live in.

SPC has upgraded to HIGH risk for MS and AL, which I believe is extremely rare for nighttime events.

It is. Long track violent tornadoes are dangerous enough during the day, but at night?

Not even the most ballsy storm chasers chase at night if that's any indication.

/Chaser for 3 years now.

The Westin downtown Atlanta. Those pictures freak me out because I believe each of those windows is floor to ceiling.  Being 80 stories up in the air when your wall explodes out into space sounds scary as hell.  Took years to fix.

csb
I was in east Atlanta at the time and the tornado that did the damage in that pic plunked down again just south of my house.  My place was fine aside from being littered with roofing.  1/4 mile south of me saw real damage with uprooted trees etc...

I lived in those lofts in 2003 in that building.  I was in a bar in Kirkwood when the tornado went down and drove at 10pm to Midtown to see my girlfriend.  I took DeKalb Ave and was shocked when I got down to Boulevard and I could see the silouhette of that collapsed part of the building.

My daughter, who is in grad school at Univ. of MS in Oxford, is extremely worried about her sweetie.  Her sweetie had to a go to Rome, Ga for a family emergency and had left there earlier today to come back home to Oxford (she's a professor at Ole Miss). When I spoke to my daughter earlier she told me that a tornado had hit Tupelo and that she was so worried about her sweetie being on the road. I spoke with her sweetie when I got off of the phone with my daughter and she said the sky didn't look right and that she was going to pulll into the next gas station and wait out the storms.

My daughter just texted me, said her sweetie and several other people are hunkered down at a gas station in Hamilton al. 2 miles from them a tornado touched down.

Even when her sweetie can leave there she'll have a hard time getting home: my daughter has heard that trees are blocking both directions of Hwy 78 in Tupelo, and that's way she has to drive to get home ........

I lived in Rome for 10 years and loved it, but one thing I won't miss is the storms that roll through. They just roll from MS, to AL, right through Rome.

That would be the radar location. Doesn't effectively pick up anything for a couple of miles' radius.

Oh, I know - I drive by the tower if I have to take the back way up to WalMart or Home Depot to pick stuff up on the way home.

Work sucked so bad today, that a singularity is a real possibility in that area.

Goddammit, went from Omaha to Peachtree for ATM training, and ended up diving headfirst into Tornadofest 2: Cyclone Boogaloo here. A Dolce in the middle of a forest is not where you want to be during this shiat.

...ohmy, and by all appearances it's headed right towards Lynchburg.

Which actually IS kind of a big deal for Tennessee area Farkers, as it's heading right towards one of the major makers of Tennessee whisky...

/not so worried re the lack of Jack Daniel's, but I do occasionally like some Gentleman Jack
//that said...STAY SAFE, Southeastern Farkers
///can say truthfully that today is literally the first time I've seen in a tornado warning "Don't even bother trying to ride this out above ground, GET IN A BASEMENT OR STORM CELLAR OR YOU WILL DIE OF WHIRLYDOOM" statements.  This should give an idea how bad this is :P
////srsly, stay safe and if the sky turns green and spinny get the fark underground

With that history, I'd say it's either built on a Native American burial ground or the site of General Sherman's outhouse.
