They're pretty much all a #2 in my book.

We still have 10 airlines? Who knew?

It's strange - you can be the best without being good.

It is just one of those funny things about deregulation and capitalism.

Virgin America deserves the #1 spot.  They've actually managed to put a modicum of pleasure back into commercial flying.  If only their Wi-Fi was on the house...

A list that Spirit will only make as a last place finisher.

And worse yet United didn't even make the list.  That's pretty bad.

United didn't even make it on said list.

The best US airline, but they have a weak route map.

/may have to fly United soon; considering driving long distance to avoid it

I'm exhausted at work after a three-hour "equipment delay" turned my United red-eye into a want-to-claw-out-my-eye, so I'm getting a vicious groin kick set to "Rhapsody in Blue" out of this...

2014-04-28 10:41:44 AM
Before chaning careers I used to travel international a fair bit - too bad it was always United.  Business class (by comparrison to coach) was "pretty good" but I used to hear stories from people I met at the hotel about Cathay Pacific or Singapore Air... I regret never having had the opportunity to see what was offered by non-US international carriers.

For those who hate slide shows:

The national Airline Quality Rating is a statistical study of major airline performance in the U.S. that ranks airlines annually. Criteria for the rankings include on-time arrivals, involuntary denied boardings, mishandled baggage, and a combination of 12 customer complaint categories related to flight problems, reservations, baggage, discrimination, animals, and other issues. Flight problems, such as cancellations and delays, are the most common complaints; the Dept. of Transportation received 3,473 such complaints in 2013, the report states.

The AQR is conducted by Dean Headley, professor at Wichita State University and Brent Bowen, Dean of the College of Aviation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz. The data is drawn from the DOT's monthly Air Travel Consumer Report.

These are the top U.S. airlines:

10th - Air Tran
9th - American
8th - Southwest
7th - US Airways
6th - Endeavor Air
5th - Alaska Airlines
4th - Delta Air Lines
3rd - Hawaiian Airlines
2nd - Jet Blue
1st - Virgin America

2014-04-28 11:07:15 AM
The #1 and #2 spot are actually kind of well-deserved. JetBlue and Virgin America are the only two airlines that seem to remember that your "status" on the airline shouldn't dictate whether or not you're treated with a modicum of decency.

SomeAmerican: 2nd - Jet Blue

JetBlue is the only airline listed that's on my no fly list - simply because I expect to get where I'm going.

Worthless customer service, worthless airline. Great inflight service but if things go sideways you're completely on your own.

I've never flown Jet Blue, but the others in the top 4 definitely get my business.

Hawaiian starts off with a big advantage since nobody's ever pissed off just to be on a flight to or from Hawaii.  As opposed to, let's say, taking a Monday morning business trip from Chicago to Pittsburgh on Air Tran.

Hawaii and the west coast also don't have nearly the weather problems of the midwest and northeast.

Anyone else have issues with Market Watch's slide shows? Even if I enable cookies, they don't work.

2014-04-28 11:54:37 AM
Truly first word problems.

"Sure, we've got a bunch of international and regional airlines that make it literally possible to travel anywhere in the world in relative comfort, but damnit I don't like the service! Sometimes they lose my luggage! What's the deal with those peanuts? I hate airlines!"

Is it a perfect industry? Obviously not, no industry is, but they're still providing an amazing service to the population at mostly reasonable prices. You got a better plan for an airline? Then don't waste your time here on Fark, get out there and start that perfect airline and we'll all fly with you.

Spirit doesn't make many lists, as they charge you if place them on any list.

Care to explain? I've flown JetBlue many times and dealt with their customer service. I've changed flights and canceled flights with no problem at all. I even had to change a flight once, and they gave me money back because it was cheaper

Only ever flown Virgin once, but, yeah, this.  Flew from London to Orlando to get home on Xmas break from grad school.  Free booze in coach, nice seats, and $200 cheaper than Delta or Continental.

Never flown JetBlue, but #3 through #10 are all garbage.

Virgin Atlantic is a different airline.

About five years I was in Boston for work. On our way to the airport for the return flight to Pittsburgh, JetBlue's automated service called to tell us our flight was cancelled. I called them back and asked them what was up - seems they couldn't get a plane to Boston for our flight. I asked what they planned to do about it seeing as they failed to produce said plane, offering an interline option on US Airways that was comparable. CSR states they have *no* interline agreements but she would be happy to refund that portion of our ticket. Barring that, she would try to reaccomodate us but it could be a few days.

Fark that, I flew home on Southwest and put JetBlue on the no fly list. At least with Southwest if there's a chance of getting there that plane will eventually fly, even if its at two in the morning. And more than one flight a day to the same place.

In contrast, US, for all of their faults, has always provided me superior customer service during irrops. Last August I was on an award ticket and my first flight was running so late I was going to misconnect with my transatlantic flight. Since I used ExpertFlyer religiously at the time I knew I could get to Europe on a later flight to Frankfurt and still make my connection to Beirut the next night - I called US from the airport and the CSR went so far as to even try to rebook my European connection on a non-alliance partner just to get me to Beirut a few hours earlier - even though there was no danger of a misconnect there - and all for an award ticket.

They're still being run separately under the same parent company.  Do you think Fairfield Inn and Courtyard Inn should be ranked the same because they're both owned by Marriott?

*shrug* AirTran and Southwest serve the same market segment (budget flights) and are in the process of merging. I think it's fair to treat them the same. Whereas the hotels you mention serve different market segments they can't be compared as easily.

You fly Malaysian Air a lot?

If you are the #1 airline in the US, that puts you at about #5280 relative to the rest of the world.

My travel profile at work under "Preferred Airline" states "I would rather walk than fly American."

I try to get on Alaskan as much as possible.  It's the least shiatty, and their new seats (super thin so you get a bit more space) are nice.

10th - Air Tran - I will never fly with again

4th - Delta Air Lines - very good

I don't like being pushy to get on a plane to get a good seat. I'd like to buy my seats and not think about it until I show up at the airplane.

As someone who stepped off of a Virgin America flight two hours ago, I wholeheartedly concur. I just hope they don't have to dumb things down to stay competitive...their original business model had them charging slightly more ($5-$10 each way) for better service, but in reality they've been forced to price match because people won't even pay that much more for a better experience. Humans are stupid.

The list looks about right. I'm amused to see that AirTran (aka ValuJet) managed to get on it.
As for American, I'm surprised they scraped in. I've done around 1.5 million miles on the buggers, and hate them with a passion.

Then pay the extra 12 bucks for the early bird check in, cheapskate. I never sit farther back than the fifth row, and I'm always one of the first off.

Just flew four AA flights in the last 3 weeks. They were all good -- on time, clean planes, good staff. Nicely done.
I have to fly on United next month. Not sure I'm looking forward to it from what I've been hearing from my friends. They used to be pretty good, but apparently, that's changed...

I've never had such a bad experience on an airline that I would refuse to fly them if they were going where I needed to go.  What is it with you people?  Do you just suck at life so bad that you can't handle it if someone doesn't bring you a second packet of pretzels upon demand?  I have a hunch that most people who have had bad customer service experiences are themselves whiny crabbypants annoyances who lack even the basic people skills to smile and be kind to folks you are asking to serve you.

/not talking about YOU of course
//you're a delight!
