ZM Punk: So why is it just now becoming an outrage?

From that Bomani Jones article linked within that link, from 2006:

"In American sports, issues of race are unavoidable. But when we turn our attention to those issues, we tend to do so in discussion of sensational topics. And we do so with little more than passing interest.

We're more concerned with people saying stupid things, transgressions that even undeniable racists could criticize. People from every walk of life are entitled to slam someone for talking too much."

ongbok: ZM Punk: SubBass49:

Is he a racists piece of chit.  Yep.
Am I condoning what he said.  Nope
Is it news that Rich old Caucasian men are close minded racist?  ask Rick Romero

Don't know why people are treating this as breaking news.  His staff knew it when they took the job, His players knew it when they signed the contract.  Everyone knew how he was.  I'm just sick of this holy than though act everyone puts on, we've all said some off color remark or comment in a private setting.  Hell this is FARK, its pretty much expected.

I didn't know until now. I don't think most people knew, it is something the NBA kept quiet. In fact i don't think any of the people who have been claiming in all of the Fark threads that they knew even knew. Hell how many Fark basketball threads have there been and not once did any talk of the Clippers owner being a racist come up. People have talked about other owners, but this guy's name never came up. If all of these Farkers that now claim that they have known about him for years really knew he was a racist, you would think it would have been mentioned at least once or twice in a basketball thread before.

Most of what I recall of Sterling in the past was that he is a terrible owner and cheap as fark. Don't remember a lot about him being racist though.

ZM Punk: I don't think he did anything wrong.  Hear me out........

He didn't hold a press conference and say what he said, he didn't tweet it, or hashtag it.

He was recorded in a private conversation.  He said derogatory things about a race and as an owner of a major sports franchise, he has to accept the consequences for his actions.  Rightfully so.

But everyone taking the shame on you route is boollchit.  I guarantee you Magic Johnson, Mark Jackson, all the Black Clipper players have all called a white person a cracker amongst friends.  CHit I bet they called Sterling a cracker when they heard the tapes.  Acknowledge what he did was wrong, give the mandatory im sorry press conference, and move on.  Especially the Clippers.  The Buss family has let the Lakers go to HELL, the Clippers are on the brink of being the marquee franchise in LA, do some damage control with your players and staff and move on.

Each and every one of us has done something racists in some way.  You tell me you love and respect every race and religion equally, and ill tell you you are full of steaming chit.

Oh you are so edgy!

What an original person, everyone look at this original person. You mush have put so much thought into sounding like an idiot.

Also anyone who thinks there is more then one race of human on this planet still in the year 2014 should just go ahead and well... I am saying you can't fix that level of stupid.

Hey how yall doing? Look at me, im right here.  I love how everyone thinks that just because I defend his right to say something stupid, means I share his views.  Hell no, Donald Sterling is a piece of chit.  But there is no law against being a piece of chit.

A rich man in Los Angeles said something stupid, racist, and offensive to his gold digging 23 year old girlfriend and someone taped it.  That was shooting fish in a barrel.  This whole  story is being sensationalized.  Clippers fans and players don't like it?  Stop giving him your money, and stop working for him.

zjoik: ongbok: InterruptingQuirk: Don't pro sports teams get in a lot of trouble if they don't conform to the uniform standards of their league? Not suggesting they stop with the protest, just asking about how much they are risking voicing themselves this way.

Their warmups and shooting shirts aren't their uniforms. They didn't do anything to their uniforms. And wearing black socks and wristbands isn't against NBA uniform policy.

SubBass49: Yeah...seems pretty weak-sauce to me.

What else could they do? Doing anything else puts them in violation of league rules and puts their contract status in jeopardy.

Imagine if both teams decided to walk out during the 4th quarter, followed by the fans.

Bottom line though is, at the end of the day, money talks over "pride" in most cases, so, the players are not going to risk something that takes away money.... same as the girlfriend of Sterling who was young enough to be his great granddaughter, and had to know this is how he felt, but, stayed with him anyway because he was showering her with money and gifts.

Step 1: Dump all your Clippers gear on center-court.

Step 2: Wear black socks, undershirts, and arm bands during the game.

Step 3: Take a dive against Golden State.

Step 4: Profit?

I think its funny how the Clippers protest "their owner".  Cause I thought slavery was against the law.   No one "owns" those players.  They own a contract.  If all the players from the clippers just said Fark it and forfeited hours before the game that way fans can get a heads up on not to go and a refund.  Sure the NBA may try to fine them but that would still be bad press.  Fining a bunch of mostly black players for a walk out on the racist they work for.  That would be even more bad press.  I am not saying give up the rest of the games but just one game as a big F U to the racist guy.   I dont see the Clips making it out of this series now.  Why would they want to win it all and have that dude reap the benefits.   Sure their is love for the game and all but do they really want to put a trophy in that guys case?

You know what happens if the players walk away from their contracts? They can't play for any other NBA team until the contract expires. And that signing bonus, they are going to have to pay part of it back. Unless they try to get their contracts negated, and that will be a long legal battle, they are stuck if they want to make a living int the NBA

I think it's similar to the recent pine tar issue.  You've got a little bit smeared on your hand?  We'll look the other way and try to ignore it.  You've decided to slather a bunch on your neck for all the world to see?  That's a suspension.

I gather that a lot of people have known that Sterling was a racist.  I personally didn't.  A lot of people were willing to look the other way.  But now that it's open and everyone sees it slathered on his neck, it's an embarrassment to the league and he'll be dealt with.

muwaryer: I gather that a lot of people have known that Sterling was a racist. I personally didn't.

Right.  The league and players knew it and let it go for years, because the Clippers were the laughing stock of the NBA until recently.  It was wide spread knowledge among people that followed the NBA how Sterling was, but hey its the Clippers, they don't bother anybody.  Now that they are starting to matter, it becomes an issue in the mainstream.  The problem I have is people are shocked and upset at things he said when he didn't know he was being recorded.  Put a tape recorder in any Sports franchise owners office and I can bet you would get the same results.

What I can't stand about you, is that you keep typing "chit". Just write it out and let the filter handle things.

SubBass49: zjoik: Something more devious would be topass the ball back and forth between teams for the duration of the game.

No rules broken there , just assumptions

THIS would have been awesome...have the game go into OT with a 0-0 score...

ok honestly, this is one of the greatest ideas ive heard in my god damn life.

the best part, though, would be the in-house soundtrack.  we already have kemps 'black or white,' im sure they could come up with more than a couple hours of different clips from songs (from tupac to bob marley to louis armstrong).

I kind of like to think I knew Sterling was a racist before it was cool.

I just think all of these people showing outrage about him is just a media grab.  You guys are entitled to hate me and call me an idiot for what I post.  What the post on posting in a thread if everyone agrees with you?

playoffs, most likely.

Clips made the playoffs last year.

He's always been a pig, this is becoming an outrage now because social media was not prevalent when he did all those things initially.
