OOpsey-daisy.

I've almost hit people on more than one occasion, either starting down at their stupidphones or just ignoring everything around them whilst they mindlessly walk through red lights with their headphones blasting away.

No sympathy.

Oh man, because it was an Amtrak train you've got a train full of traumatized passengers because of this idiot. I was on a train that hit someone on a motorbike, the person survived but the thud and the grinding brakes is a sound I wish I could forget.

I was there and saw the whole thing. Train swerved right into the jogger. He never had a chance.

fusillade762: Again? Damn trains, always sneaking up on people when they least expect it.

They must be sneakier than I thought, since they keep jumping out and hitting people. When I was a kid I grew up around the major US east-west rail line so freight trains went through town all the time. Huge and noisy, about the least subtle thing in the world. On account of that I started using the expression "sneaky like a freight train" to describe someone/thing that was trying to be sneaky and failing utterly, usually one of my cats.

Guess I was being unfair to the trains though. They are apparently pretty stealthy. Despite being hundreds to thousands of tons, traveling only on fixed lines, and having a horn fit to wake the dead, they still sneak up on people.

:P

The video seemed to imply he wasn't crossing at the intersection, so he wouldn't have noticed the signals. You'd think a 24 year old would know better.

This is why people advocate elevated or underground crossings, to prevent the possibility of this kind of thing happening.

There's a time and a place for noise-cancelling headphones. When you are in public and need to be aware of your surroundings, not so much. When you live in an apartment with thin walls, go for it.

Also, how loud was his music that he didn't hear a train?

It's seriously amazing the amount of people WHO DON"T DIE in California due to getting hit by trains. So many grade crossings up and down the state with trains running at speeds up to 79MPH.

This happened right in front of where I work. One of the cashiers saw the guy get hit, was not a pretty scene. Cleaning up bits of headphone guy all night off the tracks.

Time to pass a law that all joggers who listen to music must do so on smart phones, and that the phones must be running apps that can sense location of both themselves and any oncoming trains and break into the audio with a warning alert.  Because there has to be a law to solve every problem, right?

2014-04-27 06:11:14 PM
Suicide.
Amtraks run faster than freight trains and you don't hear or feel the rumble as much since they're much lighter.

/Downtown, Old Town, Holiday Inn ...

How about a law forbidding jogging on or within 10 feet of train tracks.

I don't get this. Trains are LOUD. I wear my headphones and hear them anyway, from quite a distance away. Also, trains rumble the ground. If you were deaf, which is the only way I can see not hearing the thing, you'd feel it. Also also, I have no desire to die by being spatted by a train (or worse yet, be splatted and not die) so even though I am confident that I will hear and feel the train coming, when I get to the tracks I LOOK BOTH WAYS before crossing.

This is exactly why elevated or underground crossings are not needed.  It weeds out the stupid.

That level of stupid is pretty funny.
