Who wants this lesbian back on the police force? The mayor should hire some good heterosexual cops who'll sit around in their patrol cars smoking cigars and playing cards on the top level of a parking lot.

As a lesbian secretly trapped in a man's body, I am getting a real kick out of this story. Cops, masculine-looking lesbians, South Carolina. What's not to like?

Here, I'll start things off: "The only good cop, is a good cop."

Good all around. Now they need to oust the Mayor.

Running background checks on people without permission or for non-LE purposes should be reason enough to fire a cop, lesbian or not.

The mayor sounds like a grade A douche, but if his reasons are true then I see no reason to make this woman your poster girl for gay discrimination.

Really doubt she was fired for being a lesbian but it might get her job back.  We're not getting the whole story here.  Politics at play here I would guess.  Like she did something to undermine the Mayor.

FTFA"I'm not going to let two women stand up there and hold hands and let my child be aware," Bullard said... "I don't have to look at it, and I don't want my child around it."Bullard defended the remarks as a general statement of his belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman, adding that "I never said I had an objection to gay people."

Sheesh, what's wrong with you damn gays, anyway? The Mayor never specifically said that he had an "objection" to gay people, only that he shouldn't have to look at "it" and he doesn't want his children to have to look at "it", either. On behalf of the City of Charleston, South Carolina, he accepts your apology.

She ran a background check... he hired his friend to be department of parks and recreation head, but his friend had a DUI, which would have prevented him from having that job... the mayor failed to run the background check, the chief ran it... friend got fired. Then the mayor went on a homophobic tyrade about how they're not trustworthy and he'd rather leave kids with drunks than gays, wrote her up 7 times in the same day, and fired her after she spent 20 years on the force with an unblemished record. Maybe him hating lesbians was unrelated, and he was just firing her because she exposed his corruption, but it's not like either option is good for him.  No matter though, the town council already stripped him of all but ceremonial responsibilities, in their june meeting, it's on the table to more permanently strip whoever is mayor of those powers, that way the council would have to have a public vote on hiring/firing department chiefs including parks, fire, and police.

I have a feeling this bigoted mayor is about to get one big reality check, stripped of his powers then decisively defeated if he is stupid enough to try to run for reelection.

A month earlier, she arrested someone the mayor had just hired to work with children, and she found and included in her report that the mayor's office hadn't done any background checks on the guy, which should have been legally required.

So yeah, probably not actually fired for being a lesbian, but more for making the mayor look bad in public.

I haven't looked at their city code or laws from higher governments, but I'm confident hiring a person for a goverment job without conducting a background check on them like this mayor did is against the law. And as another farker noted earlier in the thread, this person failed the background check and couldn't have legally been hired. Putting aside the ridiculously homophobic comments he's been recorded as saying, I'm more than happy to fall on my sword for Ms. Moore since she was trying to stop an abrogation of the law.

Her job is to enforce the law... the law says this guy can't be hired without a background check... she was well within the parameters of the law to run the background check, especially considering it was within the context of him being arrested by another officer for a separate offense. Pretty much every time you get pulled over, cops are gonna check for wants and warrants... if you're on probation for a DUI, that's gonna show... if you are driving a city vehicle when they pull you over and realize because of that DUI, you weren't supposed to be driving it at all... it isn't the cops fault. The guy lied on his application, the mayor helped him cover it up... the only thing the police chief did was due diligence in the course of her job duties.

The gentleman in question (the parks guy) was in the process of getting cited for reckless driving when the background check was run... the fact that he had a prior DUI was relevant and discovered in the normal course of police work. The chief ran the check, but she wasn't the cop who pulled the guy over for reckless driving... that said, I don't think it's uncommon to have officers other than the one making the stop run the background check and just relaying the information...

20 years with a spotless record then 7 reprimands in one day means either:

1. Like many small town police chiefs she had long operated in a dirty fashion with complete impunity; the new mayor knew about it and wanted to clean up the department.

Or

2. He ain't havin no godless queers run nuthin.

His recorded commentary lends a level of credence to the latter.

billwill: The story said she was written up for running background checks without cause. I'm not just making up things here. I don't know where you're getting this reckless drink thing though. Maybe a link would help.

I don't have it handy, but this is a followup - we had a big ol' thread about it and everything.

/Sorry I'm not being helpful.

billwill: Serious Black: firefly212: billwill: cameroncrazy1984: billwill: firefly212: billwill: Really doubt she was fired for being a lesbian but it might get her job back.  We're not getting the whole story here.  Politics at play here I would guess.  Like she did something to undermine the Mayor.

If that's true I feel like they should both lose there jobs.  Him for corruption and her for abusing her authority.  Wonder what she had against the mayors friend.

Isn't that exactly her authority?

Cops can't run a background check without cause.  Seems like she might have been trying to make the mayor look bad IDK.

The gentleman in question (the parks guy) was in the process of getting cited for reckless driving when the background check was run... the fact that he had a prior DUI was relevant and discovered in the normal course of police work. The chief ran the check, but she wasn't the cop who pulled the guy over for reckless driving... that said, I don't think it's uncommon to have officers other than the one making the st ...

Ok we compromise; fire the ru muncher, recall the mayor. Promote a heterosexual white male to chief. Then elect a flamer as mayor. Then both people in the story have had their 15 and go away.
