And on the other side of the coin, the people of that community would say that the non-religious couples way of life was being forced upon them. Really the only answer for this couple is to move someplace less hostile.

Yep.

Yeah, and those uppity dark people should've moved to someplace less hostile.

I can't believe these atheist kids wanted to stop the good religious folk from praying in their churches and their homes and pretty much anywhere else they wanted to. It's really unreasonable to set aside about 30 hours a week out of 168 to learn useful things. Children can only pray in their own heads. No, I say... God, and I mean the Judeo-Christian God, as if there were any other, doesn't believe you unless you pray all the time, out loud, and proud. You hear me! All.The.Time!!!

If I'm getting flak about something like this based on blind faith, I usually find it incredibly easy to turn the guilt trip around by replying with blind patriotism.

I mean, Jesus is great and all, and obviously everyone should pray (in private, as the bible demands), but the constitution explicitly demands that the federal and state governments not endorse or attempt to establish a state religion.  You know who else endorsed a single religion as a compatible institution with the state?  The USSR (with the Orthodox faith).  Are you some kind of communist?  Why are you trying to undermine the greatest nation on earth?  You're just going to abandon the rights your fathers and grandfathers fought and died mired in blood-filled ditches to secure?  Just gonna let it all slip away down the drain like some sort of weak-willed pussy?

You traitorous bastard.  Your ancestors are ashamed of you, trying to shiat all over the words of the founders.  Do you spend your weekends waiting at the airport to spit on returning veterans, too?  Oh, you're one of those traitorous dipshiats that want to defile the graves of brave soldiers that gave their lives for their country just because they were Jewish or Muslim, don't you?  Your kind of anti-American crusade against the troops make me sick.  How could you be against the troops?  Jesus Christ, get away from me before some of your unclean cowardice rubs off!

My Grandfather didn't fly a bomber through clouds of deadly chaff, each mission with a survival rate below half, just to have some anti-american wuss wipe his ass with the constitution.  You should be ashamed.

// I made a parent cry with this schtick once.  I'd say it actually works about 80% of the time, since anyone stupid enough to genuinely believe prayer in schools is anything but an abomination is pretty well-conditioned to respond to this kind of goalpost-shifting harangue.

// Yeah, I may have spent a lot of time around (and learned rhetoric from, initially) a certain type of preacher when I was a kid.  It's amazing how well the style maps to other forms of pointless bullshiat.

Because I need someone for a market research project.

While I have not spent much time in VA, I have lived in rural Texas, and spent some time in fairly rural (and conservative) areas of Georgia and Florida.  Nearly every person I made acquaintances with in those places had a habit of being very nice and polite to just about anyone and everyone to their faces, then biatching about a number of them behind their backs.  It was like listening to high school girls.  "OMG, Skylar is such a farking slut.  I heard that she was caught behind the auditorium giving Jimmy-Wayne a....Oh, Hi Skylar!  You look fabulous today!  Did you color your hair?"

Conservatives get their undies in a wad over the idea of the "sneering liberal" because they would rather be lied to nicely than deal with blunt honesty.  To a conservative how something is presented is exponentially more important than what is being presented.  You can tell a conservative that they're a subhuman piece of shiat that's not worthy to lick the bottom of your shoes, and if you do it nicely they'll think you're a good person.  Tell them that you think they're a good person, but be rude about it, and they'll hate you for it.  Conservatives have the emotional maturity of a Labrador retriever.

Repo Man: Hey, remember Damon Fowler?

Damon Fowler, an atheist student at Bastrop High School in Louisiana, was about to graduate. His public school was planning to have a prayer as part of the graduation ceremony: as they traditionally did, as so many public schools around the country do every year. But Fowler -- knowing that government-sponsored prayer in the public schools is unconstitutional and legally forbidden -- contacted the school superintendent to let him know that he opposed the prayer, and would be contacting the ACLU if it happened. The school -- at first, anyway -- agreed, and canceled the prayer...

...Fowler has been hounded, pilloried, and ostracized by his community. He's become the center of what he terms a "shiatstorm": he has been harassed, vilified, targeted with insults and name-calling and hateful remarks. He's been told t he's the Devil. He's been told, "Go cry to your mommy... oh, wait. You can't." (A reference to him being disowned by his parents.) He's been told that he's only doing this to get attention. A student's public prayer at a pre-graduation "Class Night" event was turned into an opportunity for the school and community to gang up on Fowler and publicly close ranks against him -- teachers as well as students. (Here's video). And people seen defending him have been targeted as well.

Yeah, but that's 20 times nicer than what people in VT would have said to him!

Harbinger of the Doomed Rat: Wangiss: No, that's a trait of shallow people and they live on every side of every fence. It wouldn't take but a moment to recall that behavior from individuals you don't like who happen to be in some group you do like. It's just easier to see if someone is already a foe in some sense or another. I've heard conservatives say this about liberals, too, and they were no less wrong to do so m

Except that if you look at what conservatives complain about with liberals, the majority of it boils down to "they're not nice!"  "Sneering", "smug", "elitist", biatching about how a liberal is not being "tolerant" if they're rude.  Even when a liberal is saying something they agree with, conservatives have a pissy fit about how the liberals are saying it.  Conservatives really are like dogs...the tone of what's being said is what they're paying attention to, not the content.  Spend some time reading comments on Brietbart, American Thinker, Conservapedia, or other conservative sites and you'll see that almost every time they biatch about something a liberal has said, there will be some mention of how it was said.  It's rarely, "liberal X said this and I don't agree with that" it's "sneering elitist liberal X haughtily said this while looking down from their ivory tower."

On the other hand, when liberals biatch about things that conservatives say, they're biatching about the content.  No liberals give a shiat how polite or rude Cliven Bundy was when he was telling everyone what he knew about "The Negro", or whether or not Todd Aiken was being nice in the way he talked about rape.  It's an easily observable phenomenon in the realm of political discussion, so I'm not sure why you're bothering to argue the point.

I'm an atheist and I'm sick of the more vocal ones.

I live in Georgia and I couldn't care less if people pray. Some organizations I'm in hold a prayer before meetings and other events and it doesn't bother me a bit. I stand with them and remain silent while still being respectful of their faith.

Which is all I ask of them to do concerning my utter lack of religious faith. And for the most part I get exactly that.

Once in a while I get the "don't worry, sometime you'll find the Truth" and I nod and smile. I understand they believe in the whole "being saved" deal and they're actually wishing me well.

Our child reported the praying stopped immediately with no explanation. My husband and I think the teacher should have told the students why she shouldn't have led them in prayer. He wants to press this issue, while I feel as long as we let our child know what's right and wrong, we should let this go and accept this is part of where we live. Our child will be in this school for several more years. We did tell a few acquaintances about this and they said "people like us" were ruining the community of faith. Sometimes, I feel like I'm being a coward not standing up for religious tolerance.

We got what we wanted and so far nothing else has happened.  What do we do?!
