This is certainly a source of shame and frustration in out state. We have one of the highest income inequalities in the nation. Roadrunner Foodbank and The Storehouse do great work with their backpack programs to feed under served children. We have lots of excess money in certain accts and plenty of casinos, but it doesn't go to where it's needed. The compounding issues with serving the reservations is problematic as well. I don't know what the answer is but we need to figure out how to feed our people. This isn't North Korea. I don't know why it's so hard.

FTA:  "While 15.9% of Americans lived in food-insecure households, 21.6% of children had uncertain access to food"

This is not exactly true.  If you look at table 1B of the report, it indicates that 21.6% of children lived in food insecure households, but that only 11.3 percent of them were food insecure themselves.  Still too high, but a different number nonetheless.

You're a loon.

Kids aren't starving, thanks to food stamps. Any that do go hungry do so because their parents are retards who spend money on cigs, cable tv, booze, etc.

Feeding America is a front group for expansion of farm price supports, which would reduce food prices at the retail level. Feeding America is run by the head of Kraft Foods.

Maybe the president could stop the nrverending wars and use that money to meet basic human needs. Or eliminate funding for NPR.

Dumbass.

So New Mexico now has more bad parents than Mississippi?

2014-04-27 02:14:45 PM
Don't worry, the south is putting a lot of effort and legislation towards catching up and hopes to starve more children to death in the next 5 years than 3rd world countries.

2014-04-27 02:16:26 PM
There is a lot of sad poverty in both states.

Native Americans in NM do have options, but may opt out out of pride.  In many ways I would not blame them.

Many indigenous peoples are getting free educations, health care, and guanteed yearly stipends from casino gambling.   Take the money & run.

Might as well ask Obama to dig for pennies in the ashtray if we're talking about insignificant chunks of the budget.

I wonder what these kids think when they see the government ship billions of dollars to other countries to help their poor children get food, yet are starving themselves.

To be fair when Mississippi feeds them they REALLY feed them.

shiat, my parents were never wealthy but I never wondered if my next meal would exist.  Might be a bologna sandwich and soup but there was always  something on the table.  Even when the dinner table was a big wire spool in a barn.  (Not kidding about that.)

Why?  Because I believe your children (or as fark likes to call them, "crotchfruit") are no more my responsibility, than mine are yours?

It's not hard to make money in New Mexico. Just ride around Gallup on a motorcycle until some drunk Indian runs you over with a pickup truck. Maybe an afternoon's effort. Make sure your own insurance will cover it; don't rely on Tonto to have any.

Because it's so easy for some people to say "f*ck you I got mine" when they have everything.

Yeah, but that's all "war on women"... or maybe racist.  Possibly both, depending upon who you ask.

I've travelled a fair bit around the United States and I have to say Mississippi and New Orleans have to be the two biggest shiat holes I've been to.
1) Impoverished, uneducated criminals everywhere
2) rediculously hot weather
3) Black and white people living in close proximity. Racism is rampant on both sides and there's a constant racial tension dating back hundreds of years
4) terrible schools
5) entire communities that are 100% reliant on government subsidies
6) pawn shops and payday loan places on every corner
7) rampant obesity and alchoholism/drug abuse

I realize other places have some of these issues but very few have ALL of them.

So does that mean that the children in these households are underweight? Why is this statistic never mentioned?

I can understand that some lazy households might not serve balanced diets to their children. There's no cure for lazy. We do not need to worry about obese children children going hungry. We should worry about a lack of balanced diet. I doubt food insecurity, per se, is the problem.

Downloading that report, I see that in the "very low food security" households, 47 percent reported having lost weight because they did not have enough money for food. In the "low food security" households, that number drops to about 5%. This information was determined by a poll, not by weighing anybody.

Also from the report "When households experience very low food security in the United States, the resulting instances of reduced food intake and disrupted eating patterns are usually occasional or episodic but are not usually chronic."

It would seem that only chronic food insecurity would lead to weight loss.

Also note that ZERO US deaths were reported due to food insecurity but there is still a low death rate in the US due to malnutrition. This would include bulimics and cheetoaholics.

Of course it is! Parents don't have the ability to provide for their own children because racism. I mean income inequality. I mean gender inequality. I mean...what's Fark blaming this week? I forgot.

Whereas according to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau:
87.8% White
0.6% Black
0.8% Native American
6.0% Asian
0.0% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
2.6% Two or more races
2.2% Other races
14.7% Hispanic or Latino (of any race)
