The cops have an even more detailed version on their site.  It's pretty cool.  I have a pretty good not being murdered streak going.  Anyone want to drop off some food at my place?  I don't wanna go out and risk ruining it.

Given that Chicago has some of the most draconian gun control laws on the books (and we can see how well they're working), I'm glad you clarified that you were just kidding.

From the looks of things the south side and east side are pretty bad, and the north side and west side are not good either. Navy Pier might be op....OH! TOO LATE!

I can't imagine a vacation taking you anywhere near where any of those shootings taking place, with the exception of the lake shore drive one.  Fun story, I was helping a friend find an apartment in Chicago and he kept wanting to know whether a neighborhood was safe.  Of course the realtor wouldn't say because of fair housing laws, but I told him it must be fine because of all of the white women joggers that were around.  I told him that white women joggers are essentially Chicago canaries, they're the first things to disappear when a neighborhood isn't great.  The realtor didn't comment, but he did laugh.  Stay to the north, near the lake and the trains where the people with money want to live.  The cops actually give a shiat about keeping those people alive.

People mention Chicago and it's violent crime rate because it's a large city. Most people aren't going to clamor or see a big news story in Beaumont Texas who has a population 4% of that of Chicago. Even the #1, Flint, MI (about 10 miles from my house) is only 3% as big as Chicago, so not as big of a story.

The idea any that any American city has draconian laws is hilarious to me. Imagine what a map like that of London would look like if you want to know what draconian guns law mean.

This.

If you are in any neighborhood frequented by tourists, your chances of getting shot are virtually zero.

In fact, if you aren't 15-25 years old and living on the South or West sides, your chances of getting shot are virtually zero.

Actually, Chicago didn't have to give up all their anti-gun laws through their multiple losses in court, just the most draconian.   Illinois is still in the top ten states for draconian gun control, and Chicago is still in the running for #1 by total homicides.

jaytkay: ongbok: BizarreMan: Just yesterday the wife and I were talking about taking a vacation somewhere and Chicago came up.  This will be a helpful tool in determining where we should avoid going in the city.

If you are coming to Chicago for vacation you aren't going to be in any of the neighborhoods where the shootings are happening.

This.

If you are in any neighborhood frequented by tourists, your chances of getting shot are virtually zero.

In fact, if you aren't 15-25 years old and living on the South or West sides, your chances of getting shot are virtually zero.

Same with most of the cities on this list. There's bad areas in every city where the vast majority of the bad things happen. People see Flint, MI or Chicago, IL's statistics and think it's basically just gangs from Mad Max doing random violence anywhere, but it's not. Pants-wetters being pants-wetters.

Actually, Chicago didn't have to give up all their anti-gun laws through their multiple losses in court, just the most draconian.   Illinois is still in the top ten states for draconian gun control, and Chicago is still in the running for #1 by total homicides.

Add in white and it is one of the safest cities in the world.  Last year 8 white people got murdered in Chicago.  This year it is already up to 11 whites/others though, so maybe they are working toward equality.

Wait, the third largest city in the US has a high number of something?

NO WAY!

It's Chicago and there hasn't been any sun yet to get a tan. The tourism board makes sure the police classify anyone that's not as pasty as the guy from Powder as a 'black' person so as to not scare off people to come in the city.

People lack a sense of proportion. Especially if they don't live in or near a city. It's the same pants-shiatting that happens whenever someone mentions a vacation in Mexico.
