WTF?  Are we supposed to read the book and talk about it at length before tonight's episode airs?

I'm just upset that they tried to make me dislike the handsome, charming incestuous attempted child murderer by having him get rapey.  Just when I thought he was such a great guy!

Isnt answer in the books?

2014-04-27 01:03:44 PM

BalugaJoe: Isnt answer in the books?

Surprisingly not. Until this season, the series has mirrored the books pretty closely, but Arya and the Hound is new, and the whole 'Jamie rapes Cercei and turns himself into an unsympathetic character again' thing is new. I'm curious to see if they begin diverging seriously, ala  True Blood , or if they somehow bring it all back in line.

/hopefully none of that counts as spoilers?

You know...the bit where he's not doing now what he was doing at this point in the books? And Arya either? I don't want to say explicitly, for spoilers, but it should be pretty damn clear what I mean if you've read...

Arya doesn't make it to her next destination until the end of book three. Plenty of time for that, since this season is covering the second half of Storm.

Similarly, the Hound doesn't make it to where he is (possibly...?) going until a little bit before that. Plenty of time.

Great. Does that mean Jon Snow gets transformed into a bloody proto-White Walker goddess and that Dany starts having sex with every supernatural creature?

OtherLittleGuy: Great. Does that mean Jon Snow gets transformed into a bloody proto-White Walker goddess and that Dany starts having sex with every supernatural creature?

Close. Jon Snow finds Howland Reed and goes to the Isle of Faces, where he resurrects Ned Stark so he can finally have sex with him. Meanwhile, in a surprise move, Daenarys sells all three dragons, marries a ship's mate from the Summer Islands, emigrates, and spends the rest of her days wearing a grass skirt and pooping out crotchfruit for her husband.

Oh, and Tyrion rapes Cersei to death.

They don't make it abundantly clear that bastards in different geographic regions are given generic names. It's Snow in the North, Sand in Dorne, etc.

If you paid attention to what Ellaria Sand said in the last episode... she has thousands of brothers and sisters in Dorne. Also it could be noted that we still don't know who Jon Snow's mother is and if you noticed that Jon and Ramsey have the same dark hair and pallid skin.

But no, I don't believe that Jon and Ramsey are related. My "joke" was a reference to what Ellaria said.

The producers have made it very clear that 2 books have been interlaced for the next 2 seasons to allow a more smooth character arc.

They also changed Jamies' character due to the fact the actor playing Ilyn Payne was dropped due to illness.

There has never been a book adaptation in history that was completely loyal to the book... NEVER EVER!

It's based on a well reviewed book by the guy who wrote Little Children, so it has the potential to be a good show. Big downside: Damon Lindelof is producing, who manages to turn everything he touches into meh.

What would totally be a fun thing to have happen: Ramsey Bolton running into those cannibal Wildlings. Hilarity would ensue. Or Ramsey gives Reek a wooden cock prosthetic, only to have Reek turn on him and skull fark him to death with it. It's not so much that I think Ramsey was out of line in what he did to Theon, no, Theon pretty much had it coming, it's that he did it for other reason than that he's a less charming Joffrey.

That would totally work. Robb Stark with a dire wolf head, riding on a horse, armed with a sword made from the bones of Walder Frey, charging into King's Landing to fark everybody's shiat up.

The age angle isn't the problen. George based his ages of actual Medival ages and Littlefinger has whores upon whores and "has" them all at some point. He's not a pedo by Westrosi standards. A little creepy for us now, but only a little.

It's the "Oh baby, you look just like your dead mom." that should make your skin crawl off and hide. It aould be creepy at any age and on any level. Imagine if your lover started calling you your mom's name.

Oh, some ancient unspeakable evils and mysticism in this Fantasy story? Who knew!

I know I know. Magic mostly died off when the Dragons died, and is now slowly returning.

And while I love the series, it's what really bugs me about this style. This and Lord of the Rings really leave a dry taste in my mouth. There seems to be so little FANTASY in Fantasy these days. I mean, what's it take to get a Wizard to throw a damn fireball these days?

And while I love the series, it's what really bugs me about this style. This and Lord of the Rings really leave a dry taste in my mouth. There seems to be so little FANTASY in Fantasy these days. I mean, what's it take to get a Wizard to throw a damn fireball these days?

jonathan_L: bborchar: Wow, I am stunned...and really, really hoping for a Jon/Brandon reunion (which of course means it won't happen).  I figured that's what happened to the babies, but it was still creepy as fark.  Love that we are flying without a map with Jon and Bran's stories, though...I am pretty excited to see what happens next week.

My thoughts exactly. Big departure from the books, but I love it. Can't wait for next week.

I know in the books, Jon sees Bran in his dreams and helps him 'open' his eyes to be able to warg through Ghost.  I've been wondering why we haven't seen any of that yet...but maybe we will see Bran teach Jon directly instead of through a dream this way.  Whatever happens, though, I love it.  It gives Jon a chance to really show his leadership, and it gives Bran something interesting to do at this point in the story.

Video and books are different. In a book, you can have the most epic scenes imaginable through implication.

Take: The Battle of the Hornburg: 10,000 orcs against a desperate castle of weary old men and their families about to be overrun and destroyed saved at the last minute by the last scion of valinor and their sons returning. Tolkien didn't write a word describing it. He only did the set up and the aftermath. Your brain fills in the missing parts and it's one of the best battles in fiction.

Meanwhile Peter Jackson had to show as much as possible in real time or it would have sucked. He spent a huge chunk of his limited script and budget to do this because we process movies differently. We need to see, and quickly. We don't sit and imagine the missing bits, as there's no time. The next scene's already started.

TV is even shorter and more limited. They have to put it out on front street.

Arya Stark is the Dragon Reborn, the Wall is actually the Bore, and Jon Snow will trade his eye for a cool hat, a spear, and some luck.

And Calissi will tug on her braid.

That would make the Jon scenes infinitely more watchable, and Calissi infinitely less.  God I farking hate perrin...only reason I haven't finished that series (on book 11)

Also, Arya with balefire would be hilarious.

Actually, Jon's scenes to me are the ones I look forward to the most, and Dany's the least.  To me it just seems like all of the really important things are happening at the Wall, while the rest of the country plays at soldiers.

What Dany's thread lacks is a more substantive tether to what's happening in Westeros.  As it stands now it's like a whole other story.  It was nice that Tywin at least acknowledged her and her dragons existence last week, but it needs more.  This is an instance where I think the writers need to really diverge from the books or start losing people.  The only thing that salvages that storyline is watching Emilia Clarke, but even that's starting to get old.

I have a feeling that we are going to see a lot of divergence from here on out, considering that they will have to combine AFFC and ADWD in the show because the stories run concurrent.  I will be very interested to see how they handle that, and to see what we get.  That said, I truly hope they keep Wyman Manderly, because he was one of my favorite new characters from the books.

2% of the population vanished. Ooh, interesting. People doing... STUFF. Less interesting. Completely unthreatening cult people in white. Kay...

LEFTOVERS!

Oh it's a Rapture thing.

Also anything would be better than Left Behind.

It's based on a well reviewed book by the guy who wrote Little Children, so it has the potential to be a good show. Big downside: Damon Lindelof is producing,

Lindelof? So it will be yet another "character driven story of science versus faith, good vs evil, and personal redemption"  that makes no sense, resolves nothing, and ends badly.

whistleridge: BalugaJoe: Isnt answer in the books?

Surprisingly not. Until this season, the series has mirrored the books pretty closely, but Arya and the Hound is new, and the whole 'Jamie rapes Cercei and turns himself into an unsympathetic character again' thing is new. I'm curious to see if they begin diverging seriously, ala  True Blood , or if they somehow bring it all back in line.

/hopefully none of that counts as spoilers?

Given their scenes between Cersei and Jaime from this episode I'm thinking things weren't quite as rapey as that scene played last week.

That's the beauty of it. She doesn;t need to fark him. She needs to make him LOVE her... the best way to do that would be his friend, confidant and give just that small taste of sexxuality. It's a brilliant way for the character to play the situation.

Exactly.  She'll hint at how much she wants him, wants to marry him, talk about how sacred marriage is and how she can't do anything with him until they're married...

Cersei will be against the marriage and Tommen will tell her to piss off, eventually.

Combination of teenage rebellion, teenage hormones and the fact that he's the King 'and' it's a good political marriage and Cersei is doomed in this matter.

Did anyone else notice that Cersei's only two overriding goals at this point is to see Tyrion dead and Tommen kept safe and secluded and she can't accomplish either of them?  I guess her getting raped may well be that turning point for her character and the beginning of her inevitable downfall.

I'm talking about the other stuff (Prometheus, etc)

But if you're still upset about LOST, he pretty much created that show and it was brilliant for the majority of its run. So it didn't end the way you thought it should, most people were entertained and the speculation during the last season showed people still were thinking heavily about it.

Yeah, her story makes me tune out now. It's just been 3 seasons of walking for her. She's supposed to be the awesome/kind ruler in the future or something, right? She just seems to be out for revenge on the common people and is letting it get to her head. Which is good. Even her "perfectness" is a gray area morally. But it's been the same thing, over and over and over.

GRRM started the story off without enough obstacles to get in her way of getting to Westeros.  So, he had her get obsessed with freeing slaves.  Then he had her realize that those slaves who've never had to govern themselves or others are really bad at governing themselves and others.

It gets worse from there on.

I think the fact that she can't control her dragons and refused to take the counsel of Selmy when he told her to show mercy shows that this isn't true.  She's inexperienced and is making mistakes, which will only increase.

Will-Mun: Not to harp on  Brienne, cause I love me some Brienne, but has she actually been able to successfully keep to even one Oath?

I guess she did bring Jaime back to kings landing (mostly) intact... But that didn't get the Stark Girls free.

What do you think of Brienne in the show?  (I'm assuming you've read the books, because there's nothing lovable about the GoT Brienne.)

I found ASOIAF Brienne barely tollerable, so GoT Brienne is completely annoying for me.  I dread the time the show will spend on her hunt for Sansa.

In the books, she is somewhat sympathetic.  She doesn't fit in with what's expected of women in a society with very strict gender roles.  So many of her plans go to shiat even when there's no obvious actions she could have taken to get any better outcome.

In the books, when she reaches Kings Landing with Jaime and Sansa is already gone, you can understand the fire that burns in her, the quest for her honor, to uphold her oath the Catelyn.

In the show, I find the idea of Brienne going off to find Sansa a joke.  It's silly.  How long have they been back in KL?  At a week or two.  And all that time, does she do or say anything about her oath?  Is there any indication she said anything to Jaime, about his oath to Catelyn?

How do you feel about Brinne on the show?

She could have done something, which would have been better than the nothing she did.

If she pushed Jaime on the issue, what does he do?  "My hand is tied--KL is Tywin's world." So she goes to Tywin, and what would he do? "As Tyrion's wife, her place is by his side.  We're her family now."  So then she goes to Tyrion, and he reiterates Tywin's message.  "Perhaps when it's safer to travel we can visit the Tullys."

So the result is the same, in that Sansa is left in KL until the wedding.  But we learn a little about Brienne and her sense of honor.  But Brienne in the show has no honor.  She is an utterly unlikable character.  It is also a lost opportunity to show us something about the Lannisters.  Jaime made a promise on his family's behalf.  A promise they cannot keep.  How do they handle that?

As you say, she goes after Sansa because of Jaime, not her oath to Catelyn.  Why shouldn't we expect that as soon as she's out of sight of Kings Landing she'll find some other, new cause to pledge her allegiance?

Catelyn's dead; it's the sort of thing that absolves oaths. It's not as if Brienne would have been able to 'steal' Sansa away from the most powerful family in King's Landing, in any case. Brienne came back as Jaime's charge, not the other way around...she didn't have the standing to make and exchange.

In the show, when she and Jaime get back, Sansa is already married to Tyrion and Catelyn's dead.  What exactly is she supposed to do at that point?

She's leaving now, not because of her oath to Catelyn, but because Jaime has tasked her with it.

I agree there's no plausible way she leaves Kings Landing with Sansa.  But I disagree the death of Cat ends the commitment.  Sansa still has family in the North. Brienne could at least make a token effort, so at least it could be said she tried.

Instead, all that can be said is she...well, what has she done?  As you point out, it was Jaime that brings her back to KL, not the other way around, so she hasn't even accomplished that half of her task.

Well, circumstances change. She was given charge of the most wanted man in the North, it's not as if she just gave up on her oaths...she was given a damn-near impossible task and nearly died a few times trying to carry it out.

I put Brienne's failures down more to bad luck than anything else.

Once (Renly) is bad luck, twice (Catelyn) is coincidence, thrice (Jaime) is what? If Brienne fails at the task Jaime had given her, what does that say about Brienne?

I think the writers are failing to give Brienne a chance to be all she can be.

Lots of rape-rape at Craster's this episode... whar the outrage?

ThatBillmanGuy: stickindamud: Is anyone else getting bored with Danaerys and her quest to free slaves and then make them part of her army. Every week it's the same thing.

This is her "Queen Training" period. She's going through a process of learning how to conquer and govern, and she's going to make a lot of mistakes but at least she'll make them in Essos and not Westeros (and this is leaving out the dragons -- she also has to learn how to control them). We've already seen what a person who is completely unfit to rule yet sits the Iron Throne is like, and we are all very glad he is gone.

Because it's contextually accurate?  I suppose people could have felt it was unnecessary but as a reader of a lot of high fantasy, meh, rape happened in the times that high fantasy mimics.  A lot.  Especially during war.  Rape is dehumanising and degrading and I think they portrayed that pretty well.

I'm sure plenty of people have me favourited it "screaming harpy feminist" or "misandrist" and I do harp on about sexual assault and sexism a lot (in my defence, dealing with sexual assault victims is my actual job), but I didn't give two craps about the rape last week.  I haven't read the books, so they didn't "ruin" any characters for me.  I interpreted Cersei's "it's not right" to mean "yes but not now and not here next to our dead son's body" not "absolutely no".

People were more upset by the "it was consensual by the end" comment because that's a tricky thing to say in a society where there are plenty of men who still believe "she says she doesn't want it but she's lying" and there's an active effort to try and get people (men) to properly appreciate the simple issue of consent.  He would have done better to keep his mouth shut.

/"it was consensual by the end" is the definition of sex in just about every "historical romance" ever written
//Most noncon/dubcon fiction is written by women, that doesn't change the fact "no means no"

Daenerys isn't doing much better, though. She's good at sacking cities, but she doesn't listen to the advice of those around her and believes that vengeance is the same as justice. She's also freed all of these slaves without giving one thought to how they will be able to live as free people. She also refuses to listen to (or believe) those who would try to tell her what really happened during the rebellion. When Selmy tries to tell her that Ned Stark was a good man who tried to save her from Robert, she doesn't believe him and parrots what her brother always told her about them.

At this point, even in the books, she is not qualified to rule Westeros. She knows nothing about it expect for what Viserys has told her, and he knew little more. And it's because of her pride.
