Banning something has never has never unintentionally had the opposite effect. Look at alcohol, drugs and every other banned book ever.

I wish it worked for science.

My mom got that book for me when I was 15. Great book. I love Sherman Alexie. Reservation Blues is even better. Or Indian Killer.

This is why I moved to Idaho. Banning books is kind of my thing.

I wonder what it would be like to go through life so terrified of the expression of other people's thoughts that you literally call the cops on them.

2014-04-27 01:07:12 PM
I would be curious what exactly these "irate parents" said in their report to the police that caused them to take interest in a teenager giving away books.

If it was anything but: "There is a teenager giving away a book I don't like - do something about it!"  then I would hope they had cause to charge them with filing a false police report.

If someone were giving away books at my drug sales, I'd be pissed too. Unless the books are about how to build a cool bong.

it's a good thing thing that the "all books are sacred" brigade is out in force, protecting all books, even books that contain child pr0n or the home addresses of abortion providers

some books are shiat and need burning

Books sre a gateway drug after all.

Kind of surprised that these parents found out what was going on at a book giveaway.

2014-04-27 01:12:19 PM
Isn't there a rule about having to pay the costs associated with false calls to police? No crime...thus these moron parents should foot the bill for the expense of the cop's time (including donuts).

It's a good thing that trolls aren't tolerated on Fark.

Especially blatant ones.

Ah, the information age: when a rather low-quality book is banned, it just causes everyone to read it, and even the paper publishers respond by inundating the area in the book like it was the Bel Air troll in the '90s.

Sometimes I really enjoy this decade.

Oh man, those kids are in for it now, once the people from yesterday's thread about the kids handing out Constitution get here.  Those entitled little brats just think the rules don't apply to them.

That's an excellent straw man argument, good for you!

2014-04-27 01:17:32 PM
People who like to ban books are both ignorant and stupid.  Ignorant because the obviously hate reading, stupid because they think banning books works and that they can control a teenager.

No dear, you need to stay focused. All Books Are Sacred, or some books, such as those containing child pr0n or the home addresses of abortion providers are shiat and should be burned.

chitownmike: That's an excellent straw man argument, good for you!

No, that's simply an absolute proposition. Are all books sacred, and burning them is evil? Or just some books? Books that violate laws?

Just because you disagree with something doesn't make it wrong. If a kid wants to look at child pr0n or the home addresses of abortionists, that's their right. You have no business destroying ideas and information because it offends you personally.

We had to read Alexie's book Flight in one of my college Lit classes years ago. That was hands-down one of the most enjoyable books I had to read for any school class. I'm not surprised his stuff gets banned, as he doesn't try to paint a rosy picture of society for young people. The monster.

What about that there movie where they had these huge storms and everything froze and, like these kids holed up in the library and burned books to keep warm, and then the dad saved them and I cheered and cried and shiat. Was  that ok?

Or lock up your abortion providers, farkers, because the data of the address list of abortion providers is available in the phone book, not illegal in the least.

I will never understand the mindset of some people. It seems to me that there are groups that think "If we shelter our selves and our children from any media depicting *evil thing * then that *evil thing* will disappear and never affect us!!"

Fine by me list away. Im old fashioned in my view of unwanted pregnancy. Punch in the stomach or coat hanger saves alot of money.

Man parents would hate me. I give out specific copies of a translation of Count of Monte Cristo. Keeps in the lesbians, cross dressing, suicide, slavery (black and white of course) and child poisoning that the 1800s English translation kept out.

And I still do give out that translation whenever I have a few extra copies (the binding on that specific paperback is horribly weak).

In fact...I think it's time to start handing out copies again...

Are you thinking of "The Day After Tomorrow"?  On one hand, it was sad to see those books being burned, but in the midst of a bad science apocalypse it was the only way for them to keep from freezing to death.

Unrelated CSB: a few years ago, I heard David Brin give a talk in which he jokingly suggested that we encourage young people to read more science fiction by hanging out near schools, wearing trench coats lined with paperback books.  "Psst!  You want some Heinlein?  The first one's free!"
