So the person holding the other person's beer... what's the protocol here? Do they finish it, save it in case the other person can walk it off, or discard it?

Just curious.

Just to put this person's cunning plan in perspective: It takes just about a second to fall 15 feet. It doesn't say were this happened, but here are two rail bridges over the Dania Cutoff Canal, one just west of US 1, and one just west of I-95.  Both have relatively short views east before your vision is blocked by the respective highways, but both are also next to marinas (in the case of the I-95 one, it's literally in the middle of a frickin' line of them).  So the likelihood of a boat coming by is pretty damned high.  And while they're near noisy highways, it still stands to reason, a boat would have to be going pretty damned fast to be able to not be seen or heard coming your way until it's too late.

Back in the 70s, we would go bridge-jumping off the McMullen-Booth bridge that crossed the Lake Tarpon outlet canal. Really good gun.

Once though, a kid about 12 jumped off and a power boat going at full speed pasted under the bridge at the same time. Luckily, the boat was going so fast, it passed completely as the boy fell. He landed right behind it into its wake.

While no one was at fault, the boater shouldn't have been going full throttle in the canal with several bridges crossing it, IMHO. One slip and it'd been a high speed impact into a bridge piling.

Drink it.This dumb fark didn't notice the noise of an outboard motor 15 feet below him so deserves to have his beer pilfered. Also crack reporter Juan Ortega is a details kind of guy I see. Doesn't name where just calls it a water way and the mans possibly in his 50's. Way to nail the fine details.

Why is it important to include the his age in your headline?  I'll tell you, it wasn't.  That's ageism.  Was he white?  Was he a Christian?  We all need this important information so we can prejudge him.  Change the story to be a black, Jewish furry and now how does that make YOU feel.

You're probably being sarcastic, but I think it's relevant.  It makes you wonder how somebody with 50+ years on the planet would make a rookie mistake like this.  Also, he may not weather the injuries as well as a 20 yo.

This is why you always jump on the downstream side near the bridge pilings, provided its deep enough.

I am particularly fond of the Safety Tips Around Trains article on the sidebar.

Don't depend on the "clackety-clack" sound for a warning of approaching trains. Modern trains are quieter than in the past.

Took me a while to find a photo of where we used to bridge jump in Florida. Mind you, this was a very rural area in the mid-70s.

Nice.  Looks familiar but can't quite place it.

Ours was Bakers Haulover (Dade Co, Fla) - 32 ft. of FFFFFUUUUUUHHHHH-SPLASH!!!

i199.photobucket.com">

Even with a lookout, too many close calls. Saw one guy splat into the back of a 50' charter boat, another bounce off the outboard cowlings of a 32' "go fast" boat. Our group had both a lookout (for boats and cops) and someone stand on the seaward jetties just in case the jumper got in trouble. There were hella currents going through there with the added "fun" of wave/wakes bouncing around between the seawalls. I gave it up the day Jerry gave up swimming and was being carried out to the Atlantic at about 15 mph. Three feet below the surface. Danny T. was on the jetties at the time. I don't know that anyone else there could've saved him. We got Jerry out, breathing and got the fark outta there. We were about 14 yr. old.
