The Other Woman is the kind of movie that makes me glad I'm not married anymore. Like a big screen Greys Anatomy.

Is this one of those "empowered" chick flicks that has an ensemble cast of "strong" women that fails the Bechdel test in spirit because everything they do is in relation to a Bad Man they don't like?

According to the NPR review, yes. In spades.

I'm really vaguely sad that Noah hasn't done better at the box office.  I mean, it was kind of a film with no real target audience so I understand why it failed, but it was one of the most  awesome bad movies I've seen since Pacific Rim.

The whole damn thing was basically "man, the writing and plot are incredibly stupid, good thing I don't have to pay any attention to them because  prehistoric explosions for no reason".

Not surprised at all that the Depp vehicle crashed and burned, though.  It wasn't even in the "so bad it's good" category, it was just so bad it's bad.  I mean, c'mon, a straight-up, un-nuanced blanket anti-science movie that's 99% CGI and you're trying to sell it to the  science fiction audience?  What the hell is wrong with those people, I've seen evil overlords in '80s movies with better sense (both common and fashion) than that.

Stories about science going "too far" are hardly anything new in science fiction. Remember the saying "Just because we can doesn't mean we should"? I haven't seen the movie, so what makes it any more "anti-science" than Jurassic Park and countless other "cautionary tales"?

I concur...It was a "good concept/woeful execution" scenario. The only person who seemed to not phone it in was the usually bland Paul Bettany.

How's that for irony?

I saw one of those advanced screening deals of this movie, and it wasn't THAT bad.  It is incredibly predictable, and the repeated half-assed attempts to portray Leslie Mann as a "frumpy" housewife are annoying.  Plus Cameron Diaz seems unable to play a character that isn't some biatchy lawyer/executive or whatever, but it was entertaining overall.

If anything, Kate Upton looks absolutely dick-breakingly hot, so there is something for us fellas.

It was good, but I don't know about the ending being "gutsy." If anything, that sort of twist ending has becoming the norm in the past ten to 15 years.

I actually liked The Amazing Spider Man a lot. You just had to keep in mind that it was based more on the Ultimate version, but it was a good adaptation. I especially like that they are doing the Gwen Stacey story right (and since the movie is out overseas, it's been confirmed that what the wardrobe choices telegraph does really happen after all). Bringing in Mary-Jane at the beginning of the story just screwed up things so badly there was no choice to but reboot the whole story.

I caught Captain America a few days ago...better than most recent Marvel sequels, but there were just so many stupid moments that took me out of the movie. The progression of the plot and the "twist" villain were incredibly obvious.

/Not the least of which is the fact that Captain America is supposed to be in hiding but still decides to bring the incredibly-easy-to-spot shield when he goes out and about
//I would have absolutely loved an explanation as to just how the hell Hydra's managed to do so well in recruiting, though

Really? Which twist villain was obvious to you?  Because the way they tied the big twist in to affect the MCU was something that nobody else saw coming.

/Not the least of which is the fact that Captain America is supposed to be in hiding but still decides to bring the incredibly-easy-to-spot shield when he goes out and about.

He didn't have the shield out until after a certain event happened.   When he knew he was walking into a probable trap, and when it was less important that he hide than he be ready for a fight.

//I would have absolutely loved an explanation as to just how the hell Hydra's managed to do so well in recruiting, though.

It fails the Bechdel teat in actuality. It's not really a "empowered women." It's a dumb comedy about revenge. And it's stupid revenge. That's not an insult. Dumb comedy can still make people laugh. Pacific Rim was a great movie. Not ironically good or so awesomely bad that it's good, it was legitimately good. The problem with it wasn't quality, it was simply a matter of it being more of a niche product than a film with more mainstream appeal. It was also more internationally focused than specifically targeted towards an American audience.

I don't hate her. She's mildly funny, but seems to be more of (or rather, entirely) a 'woman' draw type thing. I know a friends wife will literally see anything with Melissa McCarthy in it (and I mean that, literally anything, it's an instant must see), whereas I find her grating in most things.  The only thing I can remember Mann being in was 'this is 40' or whatever it was. Dear god, I went on a date to that movie, and it was so horribly bad that I never saw the girl again.  There just seems to be this 'push' in the last 5 years to create and market movies at women. I guess it's not a lot different from action movies using buff dudes men like and hot chicks, it's just the 'female draw' comedians tend to be not that funny to me, and/or the movies themselves tend to be not that funny to me.  Guessing it's just the penis and my brain being wired differently.

Me either. I am so excited for that. Today, I tried watching some of the 90's Godzilla movies I was a fan of as a kid, but they are kind of unwatchable now, and I don't think they have RiffTrax for them yet. But I'm excited to see a Godzilla film that looks watchable. I'm only hoping the movie tropes/cliches that are inevitable are going to work for the movie rather than against it.
