One can only hope that the food is terrible to really drive home the loneliness and isolation.

So everything is available in an entrée portion, even if it is just a side? And there are no seats. You just stand over a sink or counter.

Oh man. I never believed in spit takes, so today was a learning experience.

And there's only one server in the whole place, since one-tops don't count as a table in the rotation.

I do a lot of traveling so dining alone is common for me.  I always eat at the bar.  It doesn't look as desparate as sitting at a table by yourself and I don't take up the space someone else could use.

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
They're sharing a drink they call loneliness
'cause it's better than being alone.

I happened to hear this on the jukebox one night when I was across the country traveling on business...sitting at the bar alone drinking...with the other business travelers. It skewered me.

There's nothing wrong with eating alone, per se, except it sucks and I avoid it at all costs.

No worse than your seater asking where's your date tonight.

Rub it in asshole.

Hot damn, this is the place for me.

Also:  "Dine Alone" by Quicksand is obligatory here.

My kitchen sucks so I go out to eat a lot more often than I used to.  Since a lot of my friends have young kids they don't have the time or money to go out as often, so I end up going out alone.  If I want to try a restaurant and can't find anyone who wants to go with my on that particular night I'll just sit at the bar if there is one.

I still get the meal I wanted and sometimes I wind up making some new friends.  I don't really get the stigma.

Maybe it's because I typically avoid high end places or it's just something about this region's culture, but it seems like I meet lots of people who go out to eat alone at least occasionally.

I've been going out to eat alone for years now so it doesn't faze me at all anymore. Life alone is so much easier. I don't have to compromise on where to eat. If I want to do something I just do it. If I change my mind at the last second, no one gets put off. It's real freedom, but why doesn't freedom make me happy?

You can be alone and not feel lonely, but it really sucks being alone.

A restaurant just for people eating alone....well, America, the Dutch kicked your sorry ass again.
American restaurant tables are, maybe by law, set only for groups of two or four, so if you have
three - or, heaven forbid, one - you have to shovel it down like a wolf and scram so some kiss-kiss
couple (and their little dimpled darling special snowflakes) can take over.  (I prefer eating alone;
I just don't like people.)

I used to do a lot of traveling, in my previous job, so lost all qualms about eating alone in a restaurant, and I always take a table.

Bu,t I simply cannot eat alone at the work cafeteria. This is too depressing for me.

For the fellow travelers out there that often eat alone, try to time your flights and layovers so you eat in an airport if the looks bother you so much. Nobody questions you if you are eating alone at an airport.  Nobody will care much at a hotel bar/restaurant but you need to be wary of working girls in such places.

Some waitresses get a little cranky because the tip is going to be less for serving just one person. Of course, the work is less too, but try to explain that to somebody who gets 20% of the bill for maybe five minutes work.

The bar - that's what it's there for.

I go out to eat alone all the time. It's quite, me time when I can sit, have some food and grab a beer and I don't have to deal with anyone else. So suck it, haters.
