This is dumb. What are they going to do? NOT give them their diploma?

Good luck with that. These are college students. Graduating. You'll probably get 10x more doing this just because.

AverageAmericanGuy: This is dumb. What are they going to do? NOT give them their diploma?

Yup.

Other instances have been to waive off the graduate, and your friendly neighborhood rent-a-SWAT escorts the family out if they make a peep.

Either the diploma gets mailed or sits in a drawer waiting for the student to show up knocking on the door barefoot in the middle of winter.

When I was graduating from high school, during the rehearsal, I have the principal the old fake out handshake.

He made it a point to tell me if I did that during the real ceremony, he wouldn't give me my diploma.

So, during the actual ceremony, I gave him a big bearhug as soon as I had my diploma in hand.

Sometimes, administrators create bigger problems by trying to throw their power around.

Why are they doing this, exactly?

2014-04-27 08:28:39 AM
They're not saying don't take any during graduation at all, they're saying don't pause to pose or take pictures or any other time-wasting bullshiat  while you're walking across the stage.

If you want to waste five minutes of everyone's time at a graduation ceremony, skip being a douche at your 100+ person undergraduate commencement and just get a PhD: there are only like 4 other people to annoy, and it'll take at least that long for the dean to work out how to pronounce your thesis title anyhow.

2014-04-27 08:29:37 AM
One of the campus cops hated me for reasons, I flipped him off walking to get my diploma (he was standing on the side of the podium/whatever). What's hilarious is that three-four other people did, guy was just one of those petty assholes. What was he going to do, tackle me and bowl over the dean?

Grads can be buttholes. One hugged the president, picked her up and spun around onstage. Pretty douchetastic dontcha think.

Well, my buddy whipped his dick out for our HS senior picture in Sept and no one knew about it until they handed out the yearbook in June. They banned the kid from Graduation and he had to go to school a week later and get his diploma. That was in 96. I doubt me or half my class would have survived what zero tolerance has become today.

Aside from that, selfies are f*cking retarded and that song totally captures the idiocy of it.

This.  We already know how much of an individual you are by the wonderful artwork you put on top of your mortarboard using masking tape and a Sharpie.  You don't need to drag out an already way-too-long part of the ceremony by doing something unique that two hundred other people already did. And you're in the M's.

AverageAmericanGuy: This is dumb. What are they going to do? NOT give them their diploma?

Fun fact: You usually don't get a diploma while walking across stage.  You only get the personalized binder it goes in.  Basically so you don't lose it at the ceremony doing stupid stuff or dealing with inclement weather, with the added bonus for the admins of being able to lord it over you.  Not that there's any guarantee you're getting one that's right in the first place; I graduated from high school and college just once each, yet have two diplomas from each because they farked up the diplomas. (My HS misspelled my name; my college forgot to change the graduation day of the month from the previous year's diplomas.  That one must've cost them.)

2014-04-27 08:54:44 AM
Who gives a shiat about getting their high school diploma? The piece of paper I mean. I don't even know where my college diploma is.

FriarReb98: Basically so you don't lose it at the ceremony doing stupid stuff or dealing with inclement weather

Generally, commencement ceremonies occur within a week of finals, mine will be three days after my last final, which is not enough time to grade and approve all students. Further, were this enough time, often plans need to be made weeks or months in advance by families, and thus decisions are not made prior to commencement to avoid the awkward situation of students walking knowing full there is an incomplete or otherwise embarrassing them during the ceremony. Therefore, universities assume a person who has done all but the last semester of work by semester start will qualify and send the diplomas afterward.

Imagine this helps to avoid the type of confusion you encountered, not having to rush them in.

Bslim: Why are they doing this, exactly?

Because graduations are long and boring enough as it is. They want to keep things moving because everyone wants to get the fark out of there.

I think the more relevant issue is typically that graduation ceremonies tend to occur less than a week after finals, several days before the final grades are even in let alone verified and tallied by the central records office.  You don't get an actual signed/witnessed diploma at the ceremony because you haven't graduated yet.

The ceremony occurs that early because the other alternative is to have people wait around pointlessly for a couple weeks, for no reason if it turns out they failed.  The ceremony's symbolic anyhow and the University's not really in it to waste people's time.

Yes.

Maturity really does give one perspective.

This is silly, but I understand the backlash against selfies.  They confirm the worst about us - that most of us aren't selfless and other focused, but self-centered and extremely narcissistic.

The one time I was bothered by it was just a few days ago.  Some dude who looked like the VT shooter was sitting in a locker room taking several selfies of himself in various poses while wearing a hoodie.  Not two or three, but 50 or so. For obvious reasons, they don't want you taking photos in the locker room, but this dude was unfazed. To try and throw him off his game, I stripped down and walked right by him...he just kept snapping photos.  Anyway, if this guy goes all Sueng-Hui Cho and his image is pasted all over internet....you may be able to see my junk in the background of a few of them.

Makes sense. I'll be graduating soon and I know that if my graduation ceremony is dragged out even longer because of various selfies, I'll probably be ready to kill someone.

/only doing it because the family wants to see it

LOL. Whatever. People have been taking pictures of themselves since cameras were invented. The only difference today is that you don't have to wait to get them developed and you can immediately display them to the entire world.

They should also stop students from putting tape on the hats to say things and any fooling around. Some students won't be going to college, so this is the last ceremony they might get. It should be treated with the respect and decorum it deserves.

2014-04-27 09:58:03 AM
They are banning selfies to force you into buying those "professional photos" that the school hires someone to take. It would be halarious if the whole student body participated in taking a selfie just for spite.

My high school principal was a real dick and he did zero-tolerance stuff before it was cool. He kicked one girl out of the graduation ceremony because she was wearing shorts under her robe, despite the fact that no one could see that.

Might have been a sore spot for him. A couple of years earlier, he banned shorts, and the next day most students wore them. When the guy who organized that protest was graduating, he tried to throw him out for wearing the wrong shoes. That failed though, because someone in the audience loaned the kid theirs.

That principal is now on a local school board. And you wonder where these policies come from.

Fairly certain graduates of University of South Florida went to college... not all of them are continuing for graduate degrees, sure.

4 people from my high school went to USF. I don't think a single one lasted past the second year.

From what I understand, it's primarily a party school.

You do know that you still have the degree even if you don't have the piece of paper, right? You don't actually have to bring your diploma into job interviews.
