Reportedly, the driver of the truck was not injured. I suspect that his truck, however, was badly damaged, which is the true tragedy.

That truck driver will be haunted for the rest of his life.  I know a guy who was in a similar kind of wreck.  The other driver wasn't paying attention and pulled out in front of his work truck.  Bam.  Dead.   He's never been the same since.

It's rough even if they don't die.  I hit a ten year old kid when I was 16 and he didn't die, but he was royally messed up.  He jumped a bicycle off a ramp at the bottom of his driveway right into the front of my car.  I broke both his legs, one wrist, four or five ribs, and banged his head hard enough that they had to put him in a coma for a few days. A 1978 Chevy Impala can do a lot of damage to a person even at 25 mph.  It's been 30 years and I'll still have nightmares about it, and even typing about it right now I can still hear the crunch from when I hit him.  And as bad as he was hurt, at least he was in shock so he wasn't making any noise.  His mother wailed like like nothing I'd heard before or since.  I quit driving for ten years after that, and I still drive with an inordinate amount of attention and get irritated with people who don't.

In Maryland where I live it is illegal to text or talk on the phone and drive. Still, I see people texting and driving all the time.

Her insurance will pay for it. But wait, there's more! Now he gets to sue her estate, further punishing her and whatever she spawned for her immense stupidity. It's even better than if she had just killed herself without effecting others.

So her death is eliminating the what out of the gene-pool in the real world? The "dumb-shallow-chick-constantly-texting--while-driving" gene? Can that really be reduced to a gene or complex gene interactions? So now she's not going to have offspring that would text-and-drive? i think technology has outpaced natural selection.

When I was in high school this girl showed up to class with burn marks on her lips. As it turns out she was pretending her hair curling thingy was a microphone, and was singing into it, when she managed somehow to touch it to her lips, burning them.

Naturally we had to find out what song it was:

...ain't nothing gonna break my stride....

I think you're correct. Long before such behavior(s) could be meaningfully acted on by selection pressure, we'll have cars piloted by robots, and people will be free to engage in whatever stupid crap they want to while they are chauffeured around. And if people are still free to ride motorcycles at that point, they will be happy to be able to do so on public roads that will be far less unsafe than they are now.

Pichu0102: Sorry to hear what you've gone through. Have you seen therapists about this? If not, it might be a good idea to do so.

It was 1984.  I wasn't the injured party, so it was assumed I was OK and life goes on.  My mother was worried about me for a while.  I have not seen a therapist about it, and at this point I doubt insurance would cover it.  I did talk to my high school priest about it at length, and he was very good about it.  He told me I'd spend a lifetime trying to make sense of it, but that horrible things sometimes won't make sense.

wildcardjack: Well, apart from no one doing the right things to treat PTSD, do you know what came of that ten year old who rode out in front of you. I'd be curious to see if he grew up to be a moron.

I hit him two miles from our house, so it was a big deal in the neighborhood.  He recovered well enough to play baseball in high school, but he wasn't a star player or anything like that.  He went to Xavier in Cincinnati on a full academic scholarship in 1992, but that's the last update I have and only because our parish announced his scholarship in a bulletin.  I wanted to visit him in the hospital after I hit him but his family wouldn't let me, and I understood why.  The family moved while he was in college and I don't have any updates since then.  I'll admit I haven't looked them up because I'm a coward about the whole thing.

I think they still blame me for hitting him, but there wasn't anything any person alive could do to avoid it.  He just appeared in front of the car and promptly got hit.  I hit the brakes as fast as possible - even faster than now since I was 16 at the time - but the damage was done.  It was horrible.

Bingo - I understand the anger driven knee-jerk response to invoke Darwin about someone so careless with other's lives (doing something probly 100 times more common than drunk driving sadly), but I imagine even Darwin himself saying he doesn't think those generational selective principles really apply in situations like these But not to the extreme of like, what Jesus may have said about what the Catholic Church was doing in his name.

That said, a friend of mine was killed about a year and a half ago when the van she was driving crossed the center line and hit a dump truck head on.  She was adorable and had hundreds of people who loved her, but even though the initial accident report said no driver distraction, we all secretly assumed that she had been texting or tweeting or facebooking, because man she was not good at choices.  If it was what happened, it was incredibly stupid and we're all really angry with her for killing herself like that.

That kind of takes the wind out of enjoying all the crowing about how an idiot autodarwinated in this thread.
