Yage is not a toy for lightly-considered tourist dabblings, so I'm far from ruling out DUMBASS, but I would like more details before I jumped right in with that conclusion. Unless subby's going straight to "drugs are bad, m'kay?" of course.

Poor kid.  He likely didn't fully understand what he was getting into .

Ayahuasca/yage/vegetal contains a potent MAOI.  MAO inhibition allows greater concentrations of certain chemicals to pass the blood-brain barrier.  If the boy was taking any medications, especially psychiatric medications, an MAOI in the absence of good medical care could quickly lead to a critical condition.

The situation under which the tourists were given yage doesn't sound very well supervised at all.  I don't doubt that there is ayahuasca tourism.  Someone may have been trying to make a buck without preparing well.

"Henry was a complete innocent. He had no ego, he was very kind. He was the last person this should have happened to."

There's the problem, taking potent ego-destroying hallucinogenics without an ego is like dividing by zero.

No wonder the poor kid disintegrated.

Ok as Farks resident Colombian I am gonna offer my version of probably what happened.

These guys found some guy who called himself a "brujo" who probably knew the basic ingredients and boiled them up and it was too strong, or they put too much datura in it because they wanted to knock him out and steal his shiat.

Colombians will make scopolamine out of the Devils Trumpet(datura plant) and does you.  It makes you easily led and they take you on the paseo de millonario (millionaires trip) where you are conned into emptying your bank account over several days.  The problem is it is a hard dose to figure, and you can end up dead, or lose your mind.

Also, not to mention that a 19 year old back packer in Colombia is usually doing an 8 ball every couple days, drinking, sucking down liquid klonopin, smoking weed, and eating acid and x like it is going out of style.

His buddy is probably blaming in on the shamen, because he doesnt want to admit they were partying too hard.

And the area of the country they were in, I would not step foot in, and I speak the language and have papers.  It is a shiathole.

And his friends left him?  Some friends...

shiat, I found this Bill Hicks bit earlier today...

You never see a positive drug story on the news. They always have the same LSD story. You've all seen it: "Today a young man on acid ... thought he could fly ... jumped out of a building ... what a tragedy!" What a dick. He's an idiot. If he thought he could fly, why didn't he take off from the ground first? Check it out? You don't see geese lined up to catch elevators to fly south; they fly from the farking ground. He's an idiot. He's dead. Good! We lost a moron? farking celebrate. There's one less moron in the world.

Wouldn't you like to see a positive LSD story on the news? To base your decision on information rather than scare tactics and superstition? Perhaps? Wouldn't that be interesting? Just for once?

"Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration - that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."

Interesting.

They said they met in the youth hostel the day they went.
Those aren't your friends, they are random people you don't know.
I have met some goofy farks on youth hostel trips and would never think that it would be my responsibility to take care of them.

I have to agree that there is probably more to this story, especially if a fractured skull is involved. Yage doesn't generally fracture your skull, even if it seems like it while you trip.

That said, yage or ayahuasca is a recipe as much as a particular thing, it tends to make people throw up and crap, and as mentioned above contains strong MAOI inhibitors (so the DMT can cross the blood-brain barrier). It's not really a good party drug. Still, this is the first I've heard of an actual death. Usually, before use people are required to go on a special diet (those MAOI inhibitors) and do other religious type stuff. It sounds like his prep consisted of handing some money to a sketchy dude.

This is so sad to me. My son is a bit older, but experimented with ayahuasca, not to trip but to experience the spiritual stuff. It worked out well for him, but I don't think we should jump to conclusions that this kid was just after a high. Young people can be thoughtful, but they also have accidents.

As has been noted, it would probably be unwise to confuse an ayahuasca experience with typical recreational drug use.

Colombia has actually gotten exponentially safer over the years. And although I am a natural born US citizen, and my first experience in Colombia was in the late 80s, when I was sent to live with my Colombian father(i was partying too hard) and I was exposed to guerilla and drug dealers, so I straightened up real quick.

Medellin is an amazing city with great people and beautiful girls with an average temp of 70 degrees year round.

Bogota is great fun in the north of the city.  Very cosmopolitan.

And for the most part the country is very beautiful from the oceans, to the desert, to the mountains.

But like any place there are shiatty parts, and people love to go to them.

Pretty much this. I would feel fairly confident betting that he was prescribed an SSRI.
