I actually agree with that list, even though I own most of those albums and enjoyed them. I downright hated a few of those, though.

2014-04-26 01:35:11 PM
Is it bad that I've never heard of about half of those?

"Auchtung Baby" is good, but definitely not U2's best album.

Pearl Jam's "Ten" is still one of my faves.

Never really got into Chili Peppers too much.

"Hmmm....I like prog from the 70s. None of these bands are prog. I have to be contrarian, but I can't be bothered to get half of my facts straight. I know! I'll bag on grunge and Radiohead and Metallica! Everyone will love me!"

Jesus H. Christ, what an insufferable prick.

TFA would improve if he listed the albums he thought were underrated.

Definitely agree about Metallica's black album (though as the author points out, Load and Reload were even worse). Lauryn Hill is spot on too. She's like the hip hop version of Hootie and the Blowfish, loved by many, but just rather meh. I disagree with the Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam on the list. As for Achtung Baby, yeah not U2's best, but Zooropa , the followup album was really horrible.

2014-04-26 01:57:05 PM
TFA went down like a jagged little pill.

I'm fine with the list except the inclusion of Pearl Jam.

List trolls are best trolls.

Also, have I mentioned how much I hate lists that include a video with every entry? No? Well, it's a lot. Really, really a lot.

Stopped at "Not to take anything away from Freddie Mercury, but Steve Perry has to be just about the most amazing vocalist to shake the lighters out there in the nosebleed seats." Good lord. The fail, it burns.

Metallica's black album isn't overrated if you ask most Metallica fans who mostly hate it.

Mugato: Metallica's black album isn't overrated if you ask most Metallica fans who mostly hate it.

I was wondering that myself. I think for most fans, it's quite properly rated as a steaming pile of poo and the beginning of the end. Also, I was a huge U2 fan and was really disappointed with "Achtung, Baby." It's not a horrible album, but it's not even close to U2's best work. Or even better work.

2014-04-26 02:50:15 PM
Still don't get the hate for the Black Album. I've always thought it kicked ass. Whatever.
Most of the list is stupid, and the author is stupid for writing it. But I agree completely on Lauryn Hill. God i hated hearing people gushing over that garbage.

Well it's Ride the Lightning compared to the albums that came after.

IMO.

I don't like the blah album but I did really like Load but nothing after it. It's just a good hard rock album, and it would've been better received if the Metallica name wasn't attached to it.

Isn't that the truth. "Load" is a load, alright. Like a loaded diaper.

Car Wheels may be the best country album of the 90s(El Corazon by S. Earle is in the discussion). And I'm not sure how something can be overrated if the vast majority of people have never heard of the damn thing in the first place. Mermaid Ave isn't considered a great album by anyone I know. It's a little side-project using a nifty concept(and California Stars is on it). That's considered one of U2's lesser albums. Same with Black Album. OK Computer is good for that kind of music. The rest of those rock albums are good to excellent. He has to be just trolling with that PJ Ten review.

The author must be the inspiration for that one easter egg in the Strongbad emails where there are two music snobs talking in a record store about obscure bands.

Over-rated is not the same thing as bad.  It's saying that it doesn't deserve all the praise it gets.

I know we all know that, but it can be easy to overlook when someone starts to trash modern classics.

Example - Nevermind.  Landmark album, f*cking huge!  In Utero is the better album in comparison, but Nevermind usually gets more attention.  It was first, it changed the face of MTV along with Pearl Jam's Ten.  But both Pearl Jam's Vs. and Vitalogy are better albums.

2014-04-26 03:30:14 PM
Christ, what an asshole.

So basically he hated the 90s, except for getting to watch Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

TRHCPs are overrated though.  Blind squirrel, nut.....broken clock....yadda yadda...

6. Radiohead, "OK Computer"

For ten years various people and web sites kept saying based on my listening habits I would love Radiohead. I don't. I am at best indifferent. "Fake Plastic Trees" is OK.

3. Lucinda Williams, "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road"

There is a style I call "whiny female folk singer." I suppose she falls near the fringe of that. I still listen to a few tracks occasionally.

Those are the only two I owned.

2014-04-26 04:09:21 PM
I would not call "Metallica" (the Black Album) "overrated" at all.  If anything, it's the album that's generally considered to be where things went very wrong for them.

I honestly like The Bends better. It has better songs.

Yeah except maybe Ten, it was pretty good start to finish and helped define a genre along with nevermind.

RHCP have always been over rated.

Eh, I agree strongly with 7 out of 10 and can see his point on the other 3 (Shadow, Bragg/Wilco and Williams, which I don't think sold well enough to be included here). And except for Entroducing, neither of the other 2 are considered the among the artist's best works by their fanbase, so their inclusion seems pointless.

How did Lucinda Williams make the list, anyhow?  She's great and all, but I was totally unaware of her until the mid-00's.  I'm not saying I'm the hippest cat, but among the other albums up there, it's unusual.

He'd be better off with REM's Out of Time, Automatic, or Monster.  Shoot, maybe even a Weezer album, Use Your Illusion, Mellon Collie and teh Infinite Sadness, Superunknown, Sheryl Crow's Tuesday Night Music Club, Hootie and the Blowfish, Bush, No Doubt, Collective Soul...

I have always wondered at how people could find anything good about any of those bands let alone these particular albums. I will give you early Metallica and Wilco. They were at least authentic. Derivative maybe but authentic.
U2 has never been anything but dreck.

2014-04-26 05:05:10 PM
Which ones still sell?

Publishing companies like back cataloges that still get play generations later. Or at least that's how the rewrote copyright laws.

2014-04-26 05:05:54 PM
The author's job is to get people talking. He won a little, but fark him.

Radiohead pushed boundaries. OK Computer still stands up.

RHCP were meant to be fun sex/party rock, except for the heroin songs. They were one of the best at it. It's like saying Gwar was too graphic. That's the damn point. I play bass. Playing along with that album at 14 was a blast.

Pearl Jam's Ten is fluff.

Metallica shoved their heads up their own arses after the first few albums.

PS: Nirvana's music is still great. Very original. Somehow new and familiar. The way they translated to the Unplugged album is further proof of how special they were.

Love or hate Lauryn Hill, he pulled a bad example. The lyric he quoted was her making fun of Wyclef's style.

Obviously the guy is so stupid he couldn't teach shiat to stink. Both "Car Wheels" and "Mermaid Avenue" are good albums with some excellent songs, and neither are really well-known enough to qualify as overrated IMHO.
I'd start that list with the insufferable Cranberries, with Oasis and any '90s REM or U2 up there too. That RHCP probably belongs, but calling the whole band talentless shows what an idiot the writer is, because like him or not, Flea is a hell of a bassist.
Smashing Pumpkins belong. I don't exactly hate them but never much understood the fascination. Too whiny.

Nirvana killed hair metal. Everyone should be thankful for that. They banished them to the county fairs where they belong.
