I really can't understand why the US and/or South Korea hasn't waged a vigorous effort to topple this gov't. I don't think flying propaganda over the DMZ is going to cut it.

The Kim family has really contributed a lot to humanity.  I thought I remembered having hamburgers before 2009, but I can find no proof that I did.  I guess after the Dear Leader blessed the world with this culinary delight, it colored my memory to feel like his glory had always been there.

Remarkable.

At least some have. A hamburger restaurant opened in Pyongyang in 2009. Best Korea contracted with a company in Sinapore to open a franchise.

I can't even imagine if the asshats were somehow overthrown, and the government was secured and run similar to south korea or something. How many would absolutely deny the internet, the media, and think it's all a conspiracy. How many generations would it take for them to start thinking for themselves and look at how the world really is?
Almost reminds me of christianity tbh

Yeah, the 24 million in the Wiki entry is provided by the NK government. I suspect the reality is down to just a few million.

We're judging what this girl knows by what she told a foreign reporter while assigned to be his escort? If she'd deviated from the party line she knows full well she would have been killed. It's getting harder and harder for North Korea to keep the truth from its citizens, but it's still very good at ensuring its citizens don't go blabbing.

Alonjar: Like anybody in North Korea has ever seen or tasted a hamburger.

The elites in Pyongyang have. One of Kim Jong-un's first priorities was opening a burger restaurant. (Shocking, right?) I think there are a few branches by now.

Idiiot comments aside nobody wants to see a rapid destabilization of North Korea. China and South Korea do not want to deal with the flood of refugees it would bring about. China does not want a unified America aligned Korea on its border . South Korea is not thrilled at the cost of rebuilding North Korea not to mention dealing with the culture shock and psychological trauma for all those North Koreans.

Korea: No One Knows, And Everyone Is Scared

"updated estimates on how much it would cost South Korea to rebuild North Korea. It was long believed it would cost between one and two trillion dollars (it cost two trillion to rebuild East Germany, after the Germanys were reunited in 1990). But updated estimates put the cost of fixing North Korea (which is in much worse shape than East Germany ever was) at $5 trillion. That, plus the fact that Germany has a GDP four times that of South Korea, means that the average South Korean will have to pay ten times what the average West German paid to rebuild their lesser half. Many South Koreans fear that rebuilding North Korea could wreck the South Korean economy. No one knows, and everyone is scared."

Yet the longer we wait, the bigger the disparity becomes. Plus it's a bit disingenuous to suggest all reconstruction, or more accurately construction, would be paid for by the South Korean taxpayers, and the German GDP number is wildly inaccurate (German GDP is roughly 3 times South Korea's, but that's nominal only and discounts the fact that Germany has about 30 million more people) and based on current GDP rather than 1990. Assuming a stable peace were accomplished after regime change, China, Japan and South Korea would flood the North with investment. All three are desperate for cheap labor and the North's natural resources.

It's true that the main reason nothing has been done about North Korea is that there's no political will in South Korea to deal with it. Reconstruction would be potentially expensive, there is a small risk of Seoul taking damage in a war, and the status quo is comfortable for the South. None of those are very good reasons though.

...The least bad way to fix this place is for the Chinese to tap one of their bought-and-paid-for Nork generals on the shoulder and say, "Here's the plans.  We go tomorrow", and the guy turns the DPRK into a Chinese puppet - still slightly paranoid and dictatorial (think Cuba), but otherwise a well-behaved, non-nuclear Chinese puppet.  Anything - anything else - will end at best in blood and turmoil.

It's a an erroneous translation. Dear Leader invented HANDburgers. The difference is subtle if you grind them right.

She is actually smart... Toting the company line and doing what the party brass wants her to do is a lot smarter than the opposite.
