Also came for the Don Quixote references, and also left satisfied.

/and I still say Sophitia was Best Character in the Soul Calibur series, but I do appreciate me some Kilik too :3

Check the foundation of Terry Gilliam's house. Surely it was built on the skeletal remains of Cervantes. That's the only explanation of the curse.

LOL

My first year teaching, I taught an 8th grade Spanish humanities class. We spent a couple weeks on Don Quixote. We read excerpts, went through the basic story, talked about archetypes, etc. We covered it pretty extensively for an American 8th grade class, though. At the end of the unit I gave a test.

One girl turned in her test, on which I had written "Don Quixote" at least 20 times. Her short essay started with "Donkey Hotay..."

I GIVE UP.

medius: why isn't quixotic pronounced kihotic?

Confusion in transliteration, most likely. As far as I understand it, Spanish scribes used a medieval leftover, the Greek "χ" for "ji," which was different from Latin "X."

Not-so-CSB-

My favorite role I've played was Aldonza. When I thanked the director at the end of the run he told me "You are actually too pretty to play her, but that's one of the wonderful things about musical theatre, having different interpretations."

Like I said, Not-So-CSB.

ecmoRandomNumbers: medius: why isn't quixotic pronounced kihotic?

Confusion in transliteration, most likely. As far as I understand it, Spanish scribes used a medieval leftover, the Greek "χ" for "ji," which was different from Latin "X."

X was pronounced as "sh" in 17th century Spanish, and J was pronounced as "zh".  They are still so pronounced in Portuguese.  Cervantes would have said "keeSHOteh".  The two sounds merged and became like the "ch" in "loch", though the usual gringo substitution of English H isn't really wrong.

The Spanish city of Jerez de la Frontera was once called Xerés, and the wine made there is sherry.  Some place names, such as "México", retain the X, and the peppers named for Xalapa are called jalapeños.

If you've studied Spanish, I'm sure you've noticed that a lot of words have J where the English cognates have X:  "ejemplo", por ejemplo.

Funny that in Mexican slang a Sancho is a guy who bangs your wife while you're away. Combine that and the Don Quixote Sancho, and you got a donkey that screws your wife while you're away at work!

That would be true for México (from Meshica) and Oaxaca (Washaka), but not Quixote. (First full paragraph.)
