Tivo sucks get a PVR.
2004-02-06 02:33:15 PM
Make it stop!
2004-02-06 02:34:03 PM
Posted something similar earlier this week. Nielson surrenders.
2004-02-06 02:34:17 PM
E-Farking-Nuff already!
2004-02-06 02:34:18 PM
Here comes the tinfoil hat club...
2004-02-06 02:34:50 PM
Tivo rules, just not the subscription fees.
2004-02-06 02:35:29 PM
I like pie.

Did anyone ever see that episode of The Kids in the Hall where Scott Thompson made a joke about being gay?
2004-02-06 02:35:41 PM
Some TiVo users say the event brought home the realization that their beloved digital video recorders are watching them, too.

You've got this digital service that allows you to program in the shows you want to record. The program analyzes those selections, and then also records other programs it thinks you would like.

And yet Americans are find that the program also has the ability to know how many people watch a particular show.

We are so stupid as a people.
2004-02-06 02:37:31 PM
Yeah, duh. Still I got a TiVo, and I like it enough that I don't care if the advertisers look over my shoulder while I watch TV. Most of them would slit their throats if they did though...I'm square in the middle of their money demographics and I couldn't care less what's on the broadcast channels ('cept for football). Discovery, History Channel, TLC, TechTV...I'm happy to steer the advertisers their way if they are so inclined.
Now, my internet habits - those I ain't sharing. Working on making it tough to snoop on me too...
2004-02-06 02:38:44 PM
If TiVo only "occasionally" mines viewing habits data, how would they know which events cause the most pauses and rewinds? They were just out for an opportunistic attention-getting press release, and they sure got one.
2004-02-06 02:38:53 PM
TiVo owners aren't shocked. We're much too happy to care. Its all anonymous data, if it ultimately makes the service cheaper, more power to them.
2004-02-06 02:38:56 PM
I just hope this doensn't lead to the FBI finding out I rented "Indoor Marijuana Horticulture" from the library the other day.

I mean.........uhhhh my closet only needs 750 watts for my mechanical tie rack.
2004-02-06 02:39:11 PM
This is a good thing. Maybe if the ratings for shows were based on actual hard data from TiVo viewers rather than opinions from people named Nielsen there'd be more good stuff on TV and less crap like American Idol and Buffy and Everyone Loves Raymond.

Let 'em track what I watch, I say. Hell, if there was away to *ask* them to track what I watch, I would.
2004-02-06 02:39:22 PM
Exactly jay-dub!
2004-02-06 02:39:28 PM
Holy freaking crap, who cares if the thing tracks what you watch? Maybe it will keep the things YOU like on the air. Are you watching things you are ashamed of?
2004-02-06 02:39:43 PM
Let me respond for the Open Source crowd: where I go the software where I bought most of the spare parts
homepage where I wrote down how I built mine without giving TiVo any info or money.
2004-02-06 02:39:52 PM
Your TiVo want's data.
2004-02-06 02:40:36 PM
Subscription fees and big brother logging your viewing habits. I predict Tivo will die a deserving death as DVR's become more popular.
2004-02-06 02:40:46 PM

If my service (RR) wants to monitor what I am looking at on the web, I hope they like asian midget porn cause thats what they are getting!

On a slightly related note, a while ago in an ICS 100 class, the prof asked for a website to demonstrate using a browser and I yelled out fark. On this huge screen the SBB girls were right at the top.
2004-02-06 02:40:50 PM
Apologies for the 2d posting: where I go the software where I bought most of the spare parts
homepage where I wrote down how I built mine without giving TiVo any info or money.
2004-02-06 02:41:01 PM
I was going to post a lame countdown to "Americans are Stupid", but Beeferoni proved the fad's popularity
2004-02-06 02:41:10 PM
Exactly wee!

//broken record
2004-02-06 02:41:34 PM
My 14 year old son has not yet discovered content - autocomplete - clear forms - he searched long and hard for that clip.
2004-02-06 02:42:27 PM
My MediaPC has most of those TV features and I don't have to subscribe to anything.
2004-02-06 02:42:42 PM
don't have it, don't care....
2004-02-06 02:43:44 PM
TiVO = AOL of digital television watching.
2004-02-06 02:44:02 PM
Based on your viewing habits Tivo recommends...

Baywatch 7:00 p.m.; Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill 8:00 p.m.; Discovery Channel: Those Amazing Mammals- Lactating To The Top of the Food Chain 9:00 p.m.; Spice Channel Movie of the Week "Father Knows Breast. 10 p.m."
2004-02-06 02:44:37 PM
I freakin' love my Tivos! :D I could care less that people know I watch The Simpsons twice a day and Mythbusters. Yeah, I even recorded the Super Bowl. Big whoop. It's pretty expensive though, but well worth it if it's going to record The Daily Show for me every night so I can go to bed early and not have to program a freakin' VCR every night. I'm lazy, sue me. :)

*hugs her Tivo and feeds it milk*
2004-02-06 02:44:43 PM
OK, I hve a TiVo. It was obvious from day one that they mined data on what you watched. I don't give a shiat about the advertisers, because, if they are paying attention, they will see that I fast-forward thru every damn commercial!
2004-02-06 02:45:26 PM
What's a PVR?
2004-02-06 02:45:38 PM
Hey, anybody got a link to this Janet-boobie thing? I can't find it anywhere!
2004-02-06 02:46:10 PM
Ronald Reagan owns a TiVO.
2004-02-06 02:47:10 PM
Is my life so interesting that I need the secret of how many times I watch "Angel" guarded? Oh spooky big brother...

I don't care I welcome my TiVo overlord as long as he makes sure I don't miss an episode of...Survivor, Buffy, Angel, Curb Your Enthusiasm, CSI, Airline, Bucks games, Red Wings games, Insominac, Airline, Airport, Screen Savers...holt shiat I watch alot of TV!
2004-02-06 02:47:34 PM

Flash Boobies are Verboten! Hail our anti-Boobie Flashing Overlords!"
2004-02-06 02:47:43 PM

Advertisers can give a fark less what an individual watches, it's the amassed watching habits of several individuals in a cohort. A few oddball results won't throw them into a suicidal depression.
2004-02-06 02:47:58 PM
Replay (my pvr of choice (ahem...modded 3020 now 3140)) does the same thing but doesn't yelp around about it.

My analysis:

WHO cares what you are watching?
Who CARES what you are watching?
Who cares what YOU are watching?
Who cares what you are WATCHING?

Nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody. They are more interested in where you live and what brand of grape juice and conditioner you buy, if you think Levi's are still cool, if you shell out cash freely to your stupid teenagers, and if they can convince you that you Deserve a newer car.
2004-02-06 02:48:15 PM
Screw TiVo... My Leadtek TV2000 and beat the bejesus out of it.
2004-02-06 02:48:15 PM
for TiVo, I don't care if he invited a bunch of strange men in suits to sit on the couch and watch with me while taking notes. They might mind the endless hours of mexican wrestling that I watch but that's a different story. I love TiVo, he can tell his friends what ever they want about me.
2004-02-06 02:48:23 PM
Never missed "Melrose Place" or "Lost In Space"
I've seen each "Amazing Race" and "Without A Trace"
But I only watched "Will And Grace" one time one day
Wish I hadn't 'cause TiVo now thinks I'm gay
2004-02-06 02:49:05 PM
I'll buy that. AOL is for casual internet users - people who don't care much about the medium and don't want to get bogged down in technical details. Much like my feelings about TV. Less time fiddling with digital TV is a good thing in my book. YMMV.
2004-02-06 02:50:14 PM
Jesus, you people are on the internet.

Your ISPs can track down every movement you make, every boobie you see, every webpage you visit. But you know what? THEY DON'T CARE. This might come as a surprise to you tinfoil hat types, but the reason why 1984 hasn't happened is because you people are --not important--. In fact, you're rather boring to watch.

Tivo gathers statistics, that's all. So what.
2004-02-06 02:50:55 PM
i was gonna post this same link... with the headline

TiVo the other spyware
2004-02-06 02:51:32 PM
Tivo owners scare me just as much as Apple computer owners, both are so fanatical. The only difference is that a Tivo owner will never blather on about their new G5, and they record some really good shows to watch.

I like pie.

When come back, bring pie.
2004-02-06 02:53:08 PM
Who the hell cares if the people at Tivo know what you're watching? They arent going to tell everyone at the office "Hey did you know Jake watched Queer Eye last night?".

And even so, it shows them I have a feminine side, gets me the ladies.
2004-02-06 02:53:17 PM
Ok so they say:
"TiVo said there's nothing personal attached to the resulting data"
And then they say:
"Those concerned about being part of the sporadic random samplings TiVo conducts, such as the one taken during the Super Bowl, can call an 800 number to opt out."
But wouldn't you think they wouldn't be able to keep you out of the sampling without knowing what data is yours?
Someone isn't telling the truth.
2004-02-06 02:53:43 PM

I wonder what Tivo owners will think when they find out I gutted mine and turned it into a ReplayTV. Ha!
2004-02-06 02:54:11 PM
Ishkur you mean big brother doesn't love me and doesn't want to make my life better?
