I'm sorry to be all unconstitutional, but there should be a religious mental test to hold office.

FTFA: He has encouraged Christian families to withdraw their children from public schools and educate them at home or enroll them in religious schools

Because that IS in the Bible. Right next to "the private market has a solution to everything" and "slavery is okay." Jesus Himself said it on the Mount. Wonderful, blonde haired, blue-eyed Jesus.

Moore has previously claimed that 40 percent of public school students turn away from the church by the end of elementary school and 80 percent by the end of high school.

If that were true, why is Christianity still such a big thing in this country?

Not that he's advocating a theocracy. He's just got strong moral principles. Principles originated by semi-nomadic sheep herders 3000 years ago and perverted over the centuries by a rigid, power-grabbing priest-class eager to control the masses.

You know, strong Christian Principles.

Religious schools were the model for the first 200 years of this country? Did I wake up in some alternative reality? Public education was part of our original state constitution back in 1816.

Pretty much the entire OT was written since 600 or so BCE.  And pretty much just by urban intellectuals.  In fact, it is doubtful the sheep-herding phase ever existed in any meaningful way at all.  It was probably just bolted on to make the whole thing look "authentic" - the same way Americans consider cowboys to show authentic Americanness, even though the actual number of cowboys in the American population at any one time has been within a rounding error of 0.  Basically, it was always rigid, power-grabbing priest-class - the sheep-herder shtick was just there to beat the masses over the head with.

He's not elected to anything. He's "a GOP candidate" I don't even know if he's THE GOP candidate. For all we know, this idiot is some outlier whackjob with zero chance of winning the primary.

I guess I'd call this "the pundit effect" - the result of extremists who have taken over the political discourse in this country on both sides of the spectrum, throwing logic and common sense out of the window. Sadly, if enough of these morans get on ballots, eventually a few of them will get elected.

What's funny is you think this is true.

I just got my voter pamphlet in Oregon.

One of the GOP candidates for governor made Fark for equating gay sex as being a sin on par with murder.  Her own platform also asks us to resist Chinese communist business infiltration of Oregon.

One of the candidates with an actual shot at winning is running an ad where she 100% does not identify herself as a Republican, just that she is running for governor and will put a stop to Obamacare.

Why is the brand is so toxic that the people that want to be considered Republicans can't even mention it in their campaign ads for a Republican position?

The Democratic candidates are pretty bland, and all incumbents.

/someone needs to explain to him that biblical Jesus is a socialist

"Render unto Caesar"... so taxes would still be paid.

Ironically I often use that very biblical passage to prove to some of my more fundamentalist acquaintance that  Jesus Christ himself who was one of the first people ever recorded articulating the principle of exasperation of Church and state, and if'n he was fer it, they should be too

"exasperation" of Church and state...motherfarking autocorrect....though I kinda do like that phrase and need to work it in to conversations henceforth

I'm pretty sure your autocorrect was correct.  Jesus was usually exasperated with both the church and state of his time.  But I am so stealing it to use in my conversations as well.

I live in the Facepalmetto State and I can assure you that Mr. Moore's positions are not any sort of outlier in state GOP politics here.  Just look into the stories of the General Assembly forcing USC-Upstate to cancel a farcical play because of its lesbian perspective, or the bill to cut funding to CofC because of a book issued to incoming freshmen that addresses gays as people with regular-people problems, or the flap over one of Governor Haley's department heads being "allegedly atheist" and then "claimed to be Jewish" (totally missing that those are by no means either relevant or mutually exclusive).

So get a clue: this guy isn't a crazy.  He's very close to mainstream.  But then he's also running for one of the least important jobs in all of public office.  LTG in SC is powerless.  The governor can barely wipe her own ass without the GA signing off on it.

Such a good documentary! I recommend it to every one. He asks simple questions about religion, often times leading to being silenced or outright threatened with violence. Funny how people can't have a civil conversation about anything involving religion, hear both sides and agree to disagree. It goes to show how deeply engrained their beliefs are, and the mental gymnastics one must go through to confront some of the contradictions in them.

Actually, the Bible does say that slavery is okay. It sets out a few rules for treating them, but they're pretty minimal. You can even sell your 12-year old daughter as a sex toy if you need to raise some cash.

In the many places that the bible instructs you to murder others it certainly does not emphasize clean or quick deaths. In general it goes for slow and extremely painful.

Well, let's see... if we follow these biblical precepts closely, then I guess we can go ahead and eliminate the following in the schools:

Driver's Education- Unless, of course, it's for horse drawn chariots (remember... nobody drove cars in the Bible!)
Most Varsity Athletics-  No Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Golf, Rifle Marksmanship,  Cycling (only Wrestling... Perhaps Gymnasitcs... Track & Field). My gosh... no 2nd Amendment in the Bible, guys.
School Lunches- Of course, either Bread will fall from Heaven, the kids can eat all the Locusts, or... just get a couple of loaves of bread & some fishes... that'll feed everybody.
Computer Sciences.... No IT or Programming... whip out that Abacus and tally up those scheckels
Prom & School Dances... well, I guess they would replace it with the orgies... maybe a step up...
Astronomy becomes a 5 minute lecture only (Earth is the center!!!... nothing else matters)

Well, someone just needs to try to run for office in S.C. as an open atheist (knowing they won't win, that isn't the point)... I'm sure someone will prop up this law thinking they are doing a "noble" thing for S.C., and then it can go through the courts and get pushed out.

Probably the lack of atheists wanting to be within 100 miles of S.C. though prevents this from happening.

All it would take is one candidate to try and run that didn't believe, and when they go to shut him/her out from running for an office under that clause he/she could sue saying it was unconstitutional. I'm pretty sure they would win in the courts, but then again its SC judges so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Also, I'm sure NC residents only have their child's well-being in mind, you know, with all those "liberal schools trying to teach my children evolution and not my values and beliefs." If they want to indoctrinate their children send them to private school, or even easier homeschool them.

You and I basically said the same thing..... and although S.C. judges might be idiots... even a somewhat heavily conservative US Supreme Court couldn't make an argument to keep that legal.

Totally agree with you. It just takes one guy/gal to put up with all that time and money to take a case like that to the Supreme court. Like you said though, good luck finding a non-believer within 100 miles that would actually want to go through that just to make a simple point.

They voted to close the public schools back in 56 rather than integrate them.  The plan was to give out vouchers close the public schools and let the white kids continue to go to segregated private schools.  It was at the time considered a rather progressive approach for a southern state  None of this ever really happened, but they seem to be trying that approach again.

Oh yeah, fark libs and their down voting on anything that makes their "team" look bad.

I think his idea of 80% turning away from the Christian church was just the boredom factor where the top 80% of the kids find it too lame, too stupefying and too insulting to still attend church voluntarily.  If that's what he meant, he's probably about right.

Then some large fraction of those start going again when they have kids, and a large number of those kids will stop going as teenagers...

The guy is obviously a raving lunatic, but that might work in his district.  He might get elected, but do you think anyone would want him on any committee, or want to co-sponsor any legislation with him?  Not unless they don't want to get elected next term.

Christians, maybe - all they did was look at Jewish observances and go "LOL, nope" and fork the existing philosophy to incorporate some Roman/pagan stuff into the Jewish stories.

Muslims added far too much, and IIRC a lot of the tradition comes from religious belief/practice in the region that wasn't the Jews'. Like building Android from Linux, it seems like a wholly different tradition, if derivative.

Ironically, Maimonedes (IIRC, among others) state that Catholicism is closer to "idol worship" (to use the Bible's term) than Islam, due to the former's infatuation with the crucifix, virgin birth, Superhero Jesus, and the trinity.

I wish they would just take it out makes us look like farking idiots. But that would have to be approved by ⅔ of the derp squad in the GA just to get it in the ballot. Not going to happen.
Oddly enough NC voters have voted to get rid of public schools before. I hope this idiot doesn't find out all this stuff or he might move up here.

First off, that's NC, not SC.

Second, SC issues an Atheist license plate.

So there's that. Dick.

It's health insurance.  And some common sense changes like, insurance companies can't deny coverage if you are sick.  But to the paranoids, it's some massive evil government take-over.

I used to schedule appointments for a major medical center in Washington.  One lady told me she wanted me to message her Doctor and tell her she could no longer afford to continue treatment because she lost her job.  She had a serious chronic condition.  I suggested she go to the website and get insurance coverage through the ACA, so she could continue treatment.  She refused because she didn't want to "support" the evil government takeover of health care.  To the detriment of her own health.  That's how brainwashed people are.  It's scary how lies catch on so much easier than the truth.

Do you actually believe this crap??

The vast, vast majority of Canadians would never consider giving up our system for the American system (pre or post Obamacare). We actually like the fact that all Canadians can get the medical help they need without crippling debt. The live-and-let-die philosophy of many Americans is just not the way we think.

The very rare case where Canadians seek foreign care (in many different countries - not just the USA) is because either a treatment is offered that has not been approved domestically or there is a particular doctor or specialist that they want to see.

And as to your idiotic pre-Obamacare comment ... to my knowledge, the Affordable Care Act would have nothing to do with a foreigner coming into the country so seek care from a doctor. No US taxpayer money would be involved.

When you have to lie to defend your position what does that say about your position??

Also, with most of the Canadian population living close to the US border, sometimes there is an American MRI machine or whatever much, much closer than any Canadian one--so, the Canadian national health care service pays their way for a short trip across the border.  It's called efficiency.

Farking Canuck: Smeggy Smurf: A lot of people understand why Canadians cross the border for the American health care (pre-Obamacare)

It's not a lie if he's sincerely delusional.

Christianity is it's own self fulfilling prophecy. They warn of a world they will create.

Smeggy Smurf: 1) I'm not poor and 2) I'm not about to let myself be under the thumb of some asshole that doesn't have my best interest as priority #1. Damned it's good to not suck at life.
