And the video of how easy it is to steal a bike in NYC is not the least bit surprising. My experience there was of a city where people won't even get out of the way for an ambulance.

That video was a little amusing.  It took him a couple tries to figure out a better way, by his friend.  Not sure why it being filmed in NYC would matter, he would've gotten the reaction in a lot of cities I've either lived in or been too.  I learned to consider the type chain used when I was in junior high, when a 12 yro classmate broke my chain on the second yank on the bike.  The next guy who tried, only damaged my wheel.

Stealing bicycles is *not* low reward.  Sure, maybe if you are a lawyer or a software developer....but if you've unemployed or working at Walmart - at $7.50 an hour - it's the best per-hour money you'll ever see.  And the risk....is pretty much zero.

2014-04-25 04:17:51 PM
I'm always dubious when the name of the thief isn't mentioned, but the name of the store owner, and a promotional video is included in my news.

2014-04-25 04:17:55 PM
The video at the bottom showing the guy "stealing" his own bike while no one flinches is pretty good. I saw a similar filmed project someone once did showing how people reacted to (1) a white person pretending to steal a bike and (2) a black person doing the exact same thing. Not surprisingly, the black guy was hassled nearly 100% of the time while the white person was basically ignored.

so great.

Video of White Guy, Black Guy and Blonde woman stealing a bike.  Goes exactly as you'd expect.

There's another similar video I'm trying to find where several white guys take turns stealing and no one stops them.  The black guys participating?   People kept calling the police while they slept in a parked car waiting their turn.

$4k for an electric bike? LOL, you can build one for less than $400 and it probably performs better. Also, scooters are way quicker to "charge" and way faster on the road.

It happened in London. You can't take a scooter on public transportation like the Tube if you want to use the bike for only part of your commute. You can't use a scooter in bike lanes. Walking a scooter through a pedestrian area is a huge pain, especially if it's over 50cc.

But I'm sure you have experience with both biking and riding a scooter and understand all this. Dumbass.

That's the exact reason why e-bikes get recovered so much more often than regular bikes.  Thieves think they can steal it, get a new charger and sell it.  The problem is the e-bike stores know exactly what thieves are doing when they call up asking for a charger and can't provide any proof of having bought the bike.  Eventually the bike gets abandoned, picked up by the police and returned to the owner.

$4000 is a LOT to pay for an e-bike.   Here's my wife's e-bike:
img.fark.net
$1099 (no sales tax in this state)

It comes with:
Chain Guard
Fenders
Front and Rear LED Lamps
Bell
Rear Rack

It requires no insurance, license, taxes, fees, pays for itself in about 9 months and costs less than a $1.50 a MONTH to recharge it if you ride it 500 miles a month.  The price is low enough that I was save up for a while and payed for it with cash which means no interest payments.

Yep. Forgot about that.

Except you wouldn't be buying gas by the litre, you would be buying petrol or diesel (and in either litres or gallons, as we still cater to old people that can only deal in 19th century measures). If you were buying gas, it would probably be by the cubic meter, and used to heat your home or cook your food rather than travel anywhere (a very few LPG vehicles excepted).

In the course of cleaning up my house, to sell, My kids, on their Trek bikes, have a total of 4 locks on their bikes. Frame locks, heavy cable locks, the lot. All were easy for me to get off,  sawing through them with a portable sawzall. Don't have a lock on my 3k bike, they weigh too much, plus that's a bike you don't lock up like that. Was thinking of getting a lock for my 29 incher, but don't know what to get. That pic of the .45 as a theft deterrent is funny, but Mine is kinda heavy to carry. I do have a CCP, but some places I shop at might frown on me carrying a holstered weapon, even in the open. Just need a good lock, just in case.

I watched about half of the video on the electric bike and that thing just doesn't look very practical, especially given the cost.  My 15 year old 18 speed cost much less than that and can probably get me to more places.  Most weekends I do a relatively short ride of around 25 miles with maybe 1500 ft of climbing.  Many of my friends to more but what can I say, I am old.  Even with that relatively light ride I just cant see doing it with only 3 gears.  Typical terrain is much more varied than that.
