Is this a trick question?

Meh

Who cares if Chicagoland is being helped by city hall? They are probably getting some nice revenue for consulting, which Chicago really needs right about now

It would be fairly difficult to make a documentary about a city without involving the city hall.

For the purposes of this question, are Fox News and CNN still considered to be journalistic? Because if not, that significantly changes the discussion.

Normally, I would be the first in line to take a shot at Emanuel, but trying to make a scandal out of CNN working with the mayor's office on a documentary isn't scandalous - it's expected.  What is scandalous, though, is passing of Taegan Goodard's laziness as "reporting".

I'm trying to think of a documentary film that manages to completely avoid some level of collusion with or against its subject and I'm drawing a complete blank.

I think Salesman might come closest.  It's probably my favorite.  It's a better version of Glengary Glen Ross but with real people, I often wonder if the movie influenced David Mamet's script.

Politicians, if the metric is originality.

News reporters, if the metric is selling those lies to the public in sheer volume.

The difference is one of intent. Politicians lie because they want you to specifically believe one thing as opposed to another. Contrary to popular snark, politicians aren't constantly lying, because you often already believe what they'd like you to believe.

"Reporters," such as they are today*, aren't so much liars as fabulists. They show up, take a glance at the general gist of things, and proceed to give a 45-second standup on something they've spent 40 seconds researching. Or, to take an example from print journalism that actually happened to me recently, they type up the story as they're interviewing you. (Seriously. Dude was actually writing the story itself while I was answering his questions. I could see the screen--these were not notes on what I was saying.)

So the reporters' "lies" are mostly lies of omission, or casual assumptions they're making about what probably must be going on, with no particular intent to deceive. Well, with no intent to deceive other than the obvious lie of "I've thoroughly checked this story out and what I'm telling you represents a trustworthy summary of what you could reasonably expect to know about this."

* yes, yes, there are exceptions

Reporters: Tell only part of the truth in compliance with their personal beliefs and political alignment, and perhaps even those of their news employer (Fox News, MSNBC, etc.). Omit details, twist, contort and spin-off the truth and may or may not make the rest up. Degree and severity of these traits generally depends on bias of the news station/agency and efforts to remain unbias.

Politicians: They open their mouths when speaking, and that's it.

It|'s like the old business claptrap: "Don't work harder--work smarter."

Politicians are almost all lawyers or business people--professional liars. Journalists are amateurs. Some of them are good amateurs and thus also professional liars, especially those who have been lawyers or business people--editors and publishers for example.

But politicians don't have to lie harder, they can lie smarter. And they have staffers to lie for them.

Politicians, like the slime hagfish (the "eel" in "eelskin" wallets, by the by) surround themselves with a bucket of slime when disturbed. This is not necessarily lies, it is mostly truthiness and misdirection, slight of hand, BS in a word.

A famous British TV interviewer said that he always asks himself a question before he interviews poltiicians: "Why is this guy lying to me?" Good question. If you know the answer to that the battle is half one.

Much of the lies you get from jouranalists and politicians consist of what journalists call "slant" and what politicians call "the Truth".

It isn't outright lies, it is rhetoric. If you understand rhetoric and a bit of logic you can discount anything a journalist or politician says and even find truthful and accurate news reporting on Fox News and the Fox news websites.

So protect yourself. Put on the armour of logic and rhetoric. Learn to parse a sentence, a paragraph and what seems to be a truth or lie but is probably neither.

Ask yourselves:

Why is this guy lying to me?
How is this guy lying to me?
What can I learn from reading between the lies and the lines?

2014-04-25 12:26:48 PM
Politicians don"t lie less or more than journalists. THEY LIE BETTER.

It used to be that telling a lie meant you intended to deceive, but that was before Internet snark took over and everyone got too lazy to say that someone said something that simply wasn't true.

I miss those days, especially since knowing someone lied meant knowing what was in their head and that was before we all became mind readers.

Jekylman: What I got from this thread:
Lying Democrats are punished and humiliated
Lying Republicans are congratulated and held up as a positive example for all Americans

Also, "lying democrats" is a redundancy, and "lying Republicans" is an oxymoron.

I used to think politicians were the lyingest pieces of crap around. Then I started watching CNN's coverage of MH370 and I did a complete 360.

Did anyone actually RTFA (yeah this is Fark)?

"Producers asked the mayor's office to help them set up key interactions in what the cable network has billed as a nonscripted eight-part series."

and

"More than 700 emails reviewed by the Tribune reveal that the production team worked hand in hand with the mayor's advisers to develop storylines, arrange specific camera shots...."

How is developing storylines and arranging specific camera shots ahead of time  nonscripted?  That's the reason for the article, that's the lie being presented.

Not that this changes my perception of Chicagoland any as I assumed that was standard procedure for anything with Emanuel's office, but for CNN to bill the series as  nonscripted just seems quite dishonest.

Are you saying you had sex with a whole XBox, or that you came all the way around to believing the same thing you did before?

Yes. Who cares? We all should.
At least we all should know who pays their paychecks- tells them what to say or vote.

Because they didn't write lines for anyone beforehand? There was no script.

David Cross' appearances in Arrested Development were largely unscripted too - they let him improvise his own lines as Tobias once they realized he could off-the-cuff funnier things than Hurwitz/Mitchell could write.

Might be a pedantic difference, but selling the doc as "unscripted" is just that - a sales pitch.

Remember that there is nothing "real" in "reality TV".

Lee451: Delta1212: MmmmBacon: For the purposes of this question, are Fox News and CNN still considered to be journalistic? Because if not, that significantly changes the discussion.

Ok, I understand saying that about CNN, but Fox News? I don't think you can apply the word "still" there.

Fox News is only the highest rated cable news show in the country. Most Americans see something that you all can't.

You realize that "highest rated cable news" is in no way synonymous with "most Americans", right? 99% of Americans don't watch Fox.

Very true. However, more people watch Fox throughout the day than watch the next 4 channels combined. That doesn't really mean anything about the accuracy of the reporting or the intelligence of the viewers. The highest ranking cable show last week was Game of Thrones but the next three slots are for WWE "wrestling".

I think some people watch Fox for the same reason they watch Honey Boo Boo or used to watch Fear Factor. It's rubbernecking at the accident or gawking at the sideshow. Since you can no longer trot out Bobo the Dog-Faced Boy and The Lobster Girl you put the freaks on TV and Fox has turned into the Greatest Show on Earth. The other networks seem to fawn over progressive/Democrat/liberal talking points and spew a vomitus of pablum that the brain dead viewers suck up like Brundlefly. Fox provides an alternative of bile and effluent, smearing the political halls with muck and mire, and some viewers tune in just to watch the mighty get blasted by a stream of shiat. As Alfred once said, "Some men just want to watch the world burn." And so do many viewers.
