Gotta say, I do like the term "Moyesiah". Smart money is on United looking like its old self this weekend and beating Norwich at Old Trafford, even though Norwich will be fighting to avoid relegation. Giggs will give the team a lot of creative latitude.

The setup which I'm sort of hoping to see:

   De Gea

Jones - Smalling - Evans - Buttner

   Carrick - Fletcher

Valencia - Kagawa - Mata

Rooney*

* Possibly RvP if he was just faking the knee injury all this time to avoid playing under Moyes

I'm throwing up the help symbol. In Chicago for the weekend, out in the NW suburbs , and my sister in law doesn't have NBCSN. I could watch Liverpool on my laptop but I'd rather see on a tv. Anyone know of a footie bar out in the Schaumburg area?

This was one game too early for us. With Moyes we could get a point, now Giggs might tactically be worse than Moyes but he will have the players respect and get them playing

I'd be OK with that, so long as Mata and Kagawa have permission to switch around as they see fit. Mata is less effective stuck on the outside. I'm also not wild about Carrick and Fletcher playing together, but I don't see anything better. I would also rather see Januzaj than Valencia, but maybe he is most effective coming on later.

How does the diamond formation work? Do Utd have the personnel to play that?

You know what would be hilarious? Utd are 5-0 up with 10 minutes to go, so Giggs brings on himself, Neville and Scholes for the last few minutes.

/And yes, I know he can't actually do that

Sort of what I was thinking. You guys are catching them on an emotional high. That said, though, I still think a point is on the table if Norwich scores first. There are zero expectations on Giggs to win any silverware; he's just been tapped to see out the season without letting United get much more embarrassed.

Wow. Straight away, an flying own goal.

2014-04-26 07:47:14 AM
Also, Southampton haven't been playing too well, but they're at home and they know that Everton needs the points. With Everton's injuries, Southampton could--

shiat, and they freaking scored before I could look all brilliant

I'm getting flashbacks to US v Italy 2006 right now.

That was a superb header, apart from one tiny detail...

2014-04-26 07:50:24 AM
I think someone told Alcaraz he was defending the other goal. It was quite an impressive header.

Man, Martinez has them scoring no matter where they are on the pitch.

Serious note, though, this is really, really bad for Everton. They're without Mirallas, Distin, Pienaar, Jagielka, Oviedo, Kone, Gibson...they'd be having a difficult time in this game even without being a goal down away. Southampton will make this very, very difficult for Everton today.

Of course, this happened like 3 minutes after I took my insurance off this match (Everton win) and put it on the Battle of the Wests (Ham win).

2014-04-26 07:54:09 AM
On the plus side, I think Alcaraz has the Own Goal of the Season award on lockdown.

I was tempted to put my banker on Everton to win this game just to keep my Banker Upset Curse alive, but I couldn't quite bring myself to risk it.

I'm thinking this thread is going to be fairly quiet today. It seems to be mostly Europa League places at stake today, with the big fireworks reserved for tomorrow.

Mostly, but I'm watching closely because of the fight for the last CL spot. Arsenal is in the last spot right now, but has no breathing room to drop any points at all if Everton keeps on winning.

Everton can't afford to lose him.

Southampton wasting a big chance to control the match.

Davis should have buried that.

United's playing today?

Yep. Everton in the early game, Tottenham at 3pm and Utd in the late game is my Europa Qualifying line up for today.

On a serious note, Utd realistically look to be locked in to 7th place, which opens up the truly catastrophic scenario where Arsenal slip to 5th and win the FA Cup, which would have Utd playing Europa qualifying games in August. If Utd are going to play meaningless summer games, I'd rather they play them in the US where I can go watch than in Buttfarkistan in front of 200 locals and a dozen goats.

They really need that second goal. If they can see out the first half on a 2-0 lead, I don't believe Everton has the firepower to score three in the second half.

Everton want an Own Goal Hat-trick.

...of headers.

That one wasn't as good as the opener, but it was still well-taken.

2014-04-26 08:18:18 AM
Both own goals were truly boneheaded defending decisions. Martinez must be having a mental breakdown.

That was a very funny chant from the Saints fans: "Who needs Jay Rodriguez, we got your back four."

Looks like I'm starting the day at -10.  What an implosion by Everton.

2014-04-26 08:20:45 AM
If I were Southampton, my tactics for the rest of the game would be to aim long crosses at the Everton defenders.

2014-04-26 08:20:51 AM
In retrospect, the Soton signing of OwnGoal was a brilliant move in the January window.

You see that Everton? That was a safe defensive header.

Afternoon all. Limited input from me today - travelling, sorting through the extensive papers of a dead man. First though, scampi and chips.

On par with Liverpool's decision to drop Post.

I realize I'm the last person on the planet to notice this, but Lallana is a real talent. I haven't really watched him play much, but he's really impressive both with his running off the ball and his control on it.

I'm pretty sure he's nominated for the Player of the Season award.

A lot of teams rumored to be lining up for him, but So'ton say they aren't selling.

WHERE THE FARK IS REBECCA LOWE?????

I guess I should say: Everton GET IN (your own net)

Moving house today, so limited contributions from me. I had my banker on 1-0 Everton here.

Also the MIGHTY Oxford United need to win both their remaining games (including today vs. Accrington Stanley [Who're they?] and rely on help, as they are 5 points adrift of the final play off spot with two games remaining.

So, today I'm also rooting for Newport County this week and Scoonthorpe next week.

That just means they won't take anything less than £30mil. A team like Southamton never turns down good money for any player.

Traditionally, Utd don't get involved in bidding wars when lots of teams are in for player.

But I'm not sure that "traditionally" means much at this particular moment.
