Um, no, if I recall correctly it's overgrazing of goats on the northeastern desert in China causing it.

Yeah but goats create methane gas which contributes to global warming I mean climate change. Plus those damn goats put a jinx on the Cubs!

Yeah, and I hear there's some Chinese guy refusing to pay for his grazing rights and saying he doesn't recognize the authority of the Chinese government. This should be good.

That really sucks but from the video it looks like "welp, time to get in my car or on my scooter and go places".  It's like snow where I live.  People can't drive in it and always make things worse "but that's not gonna stop me.  I have dry cleaning to pick up and need to get pickles from the store."

My thoughts exactly.  For a society to have the amount of technology at its fingertips, China could learn a thing or two from America circa 1930.  If our Dust Bowl had occurred less than 10 years ago, I might cut them some slack, but damn folks, learn from our stupidity.  We're talking almost a hundred years ago.  Read up on mud pneumonia, China and stop thinking you have to do every friggin thing we did.

Evidence seems to be that no one learns from history, each country has to pollute, poison, desertify, flood, smog, choke, etc., its own land and people in turn before they will finally end up copying what the countries that have made all those mistakes before already learned to do.

Beijing's been getting thousands of tons of sand dumped on it for years apparently, and it's unquestionably getting worse. It does start with herders in northwest China and Mongolia overgrazing deserts and depleting water until there's absolutely nothing left to stop erosion. But once sand can freely fly around, vegetation in nearby areas gets buried and dies, and it turns into an uncontrollable cycle. China's just getting super-farked and they can't stop it now.

I saw the last 1/3 of this documentary years ago; thanks for posting the rest... and now I have a sad about the whole situation. There is literally nothing they can do to stop the spread of the deserts, short of maybe terraforming on a scale not unlike what we'd have to do on another planet.
