Uh, without having read the article, isn't Chipotle/Freebirds basically 'upscale' Taco Bell?  Between the 'al freso' menu or whatever it was where they were trying to fool people into thinking you could eat there and loose weight (aka the subway lie), and this, it honestly just seems like they saw the recent explosion of 'street taco' style places, and went 'fark that, we can do that', and probably think they can get some synergy from the name.

It's not like YUM! brand food-type-stuff doesn't own a billion different food places already.  Dallas alone has had 3-4 new places open in the last year or two which serve street style tacos (Velvet Taco, Rusty's tacos, Torchies, Fuzzies, some terrible 'authentic' place next door to me that served the most soulless, flavorless, bland, pathetic, taco I've ever had), and that's just in a 5 mile span on Greenville (one of the semi-trendy bits).  Plus people are super-stoked/obsessed with Chipotle for some reason (I've never actually found anything I like there. A bowl is tolerable, but I won't go unless someone else absolutely has to).

If they can get the menu right, it'll probably do well enough.

My parents owned a Taoo John's when I was in high school.  *heaven!*  ;)

The best taco I ever had was at the Texas State Fair a few years ago, when the Big Tex was still around. I'm from Michigan, so my standards were probably low, but they were the tacos I'd been missing all my life. One shredded beef, one shredded chicken, corn tortillas, cilantro, perfectly spiced, lime wedges on the side, maybe two bucks each. They were heavenly tacos.

And no they were not deep fried. I did not eat deep fried anything at the Texas State Fair. Why, when there were  heavenly tacos?

I like Taco Bell just as much as the next guy, but seriously, why would you go to Taco Bell if you wanted Mexican food?

[www.devbear.com image 800x495]

Yep.

And they're only $2.50 at the Mexican restaurant down the street.  It's about half a mile farther than Taco Bell, it's not a chain, and their specialty is Mexican seafood (2 pages of a 5 page menu are seafood).  It shows up at the table with just the tongue, you pick up your toppings from the salsa bar.  Oh, and fresh Menudo on Saturdays and Sundays.  And not just good tongue, best tripe and pork stomach tacos I've ever had, too.

It's good that they close at 10, or I'd be on my way even though I've already eaten.

GRCooper: Cerebral Knievel: obligitory comment reguarding that the only way to get real mezican food is to go to a bodega in a mexican nieghborhood and that anything else is just mexican flavored slop on a tortilla shell

There used to be one in Charlottesville - a little Mexican store. You had to slide back through stacks of boxes and display cabinets to this little back room.

Inside was this little old man, sitting on an overturned paint bucket, managing several hot plates with simmering pots. The smell was incredible.

You needed to order in Spanish, cuz he spoke no English. Amazing food. Cheap, too.

Oh yeah! Mr. Diego! you also had to strip down to your skivies and kneel in a circle around all the hot plates with all the other customers. . then you had to eat the peyote. while waiting for the peyote to kick in this little aztec guy would tell you about the spirit realm and machu pichu. then the Peyote would kick in... you would puke and your spirit animal would present itself...

and then and ONLY THEN... were you ALLOWED to even THINK about getting a chimichanga

Yeah. You're probably right.

Pseudo-Tex-Mex can be great for what it is, but you just have to acknowledge that that's what it is. And I have no idea where those state fair tacos fell on the scale, but they were real to me... Real-enough Mexican... How could anyone pass that up?

Ahh yes, the dwindling supply of racists in the mainstream workforce.  May they quickly be forced into retirement.

I worked with a guy like that, older guy born in the 50s.  One day he was telling me about how Coke doesn't taste like Coke anymore, whereupon I told him that sometimes you could find Coke made with sugar.  That piqued his interest.  The next day we were on a location job, and sure enough the local grocery store had the fabled Mexican Coke made with real sugar.  He was all excited until he asked how they had it and I mentioned that they must have imported from Mexico.

Oh man, the look on his face.  He couldn't have set that bottle down fast enough.  He nearly dropped it, and then wiped his hand off, and this is coming from a guy who would eat sandwiches without wiping the dust and road oil off his hands first.  He was convinced I was going to get mouth AIDS from Dirty Mexican Coke, no matter how many times I pointed out that there are FDA regs on imported food items.

...I will admit one of the bottles tasted a little bit like dirt, but it was still farking delicious.

I'll eat to that, though I'd have to get mine without the chili verde since my stomach says green chiles are the devil.  Load me up with the red instead.

Don't get me wrong, I'll eat Taco Bell.  It's plenty edible, but internally my brain does not classify their tacos as actually being tacos.

Waaaaay closer to me than the nearest Taco Bell, thank God. Awesome food. I'm often the only gringo in there. Their campechana is heaven in a bowl, and their carnitas is fried piggy bliss wrapped in a tortilla.

The place is quite nice inside without being too stuffy and formal (which I like) and I can sit and eat at the bar (which I like very much).

^^THIS^^ is why I haven't been to a Taco Bell in over 10 years.

I'm a Gringo who is married to a Latina. If she is feeling too lazy to break out the Molcajete and make our own, we head to Tia Helitas.

shtychkn: Kind of how Fast Food Burger Joints are not really burgers either.

Certainly not McD's burgers.  Again, that is a food I will eat, but I don't count them as hamburgers.  Actually what I count them as are "protein-based ketchup flavor carriers".  I like ketchup.

Really though, most fast food burgers have gotten better in the last decade or so, to the point where they actually resemble real hamburgers, just at the bottom end of the spectrum.  Carl's Jr. and Jack in the Box are fairly high in terms of quality, not to the level of say In-n-Out or Five Guys, but still a lot better than what you'd expect from Fast Food.  Hell, even Wendy's and Burger King patties taste like real beef.  It's just this scary jump from BK down to McD's level where things go truly unrecognizable.

The ABC in Huntington are unbelievable assholes. One of my acquaintances had a liquor license at his restaurant and he has some guy playing guitar when the ABC drops by for a minor check and they told him he couldn't have live entertainment without their permission and they suspended his license for 2 weeks. There used to be a Taco Bell on Main St. half a block up from PCH but it's now a Wahoo Fish Taco and then there was another one on PCH and 10th but it's been closed for almost a decade.

Geez, seriously? He had to ask where Mexican Coke came from?Just what's been in all the dirt he's been eating over the years? Because brain damage would explain so much about a guy like that.

I love the world foods aisle at Meijer, and I always slow down around the Mexican section just hoping they'll have Malta Goya, but they never do. Mmm, malt soda. Seriously. Keep meaning to try the other flavors... but I always end up going for guava nectar or something, if I'm in that mood.
