a hush-hush, fast-casual restaurant project developed deep in the bowels of Taco Bell's Irvine, Calif., headquarters building

I'm not used to seeing the words "bowels" and "Taco Bell" together in quite that context.

Considering their motto over the last 30 years was "It's 1 A.M., you're drunk, and everywhere nearby is closed," I can't see them pulling this transition off.

I'm just waiting for them to go the full nine and rename Taco Bell as "Drunk Chow."

I'll eat to that, though I'd have to get mine without the chili verde since my stomach says green chiles are the devil.  Load me up with the red instead.

Don't get me wrong, I'll eat Taco Bell.  It's plenty edible, but internally my brain does not classify their tacos as actually being tacos.

If you want good Mexican food, you gotta go where the Mexicans go.

media.yellowbot.com

Waaaaay closer to me than the nearest Taco Bell, thank God. Awesome food. I'm often the only gringo in there. Their campechana is heaven in a bowl, and their carnitas is fried piggy bliss wrapped in a tortilla.

The place is quite nice inside without being too stuffy and formal (which I like) and I can sit and eat at the bar (which I like very much).

^^THIS^^ is why I haven't been to a Taco Bell in over 10 years.

Nothing better than a well made taco.  Make your own corn tortillas and do them at home - it's hard to get much better than that.

I think the best place I've been too is Tortacos. Their menu is a bit limited though, and they're not really in DC proper.

And yet...in Spain the word "taco" has an entirely different meaning all together. I can never drive by Taco Bell or better yet, Taco Bueno without laughing and thinking about a specific portion of a woman's anatomy.

Taco Bell is barely food, it certainly isn't tacos, or Mexican.  Eating there usually results in me being anguished over the toilet within the hour.

On the other hand, I know where my local really good "where the Mexicans go" Taqueria is. . .

The tacos are NOTHING like Taco Bell or other Mexican-American food (small flour tortilla, two layers, small scoop of grilled lamb, chicken, beef, pork or chorizo (or tongue or tripe if you ask for it), a little lime and cilantro, some onions, some verde or red salsa. . .awesome.  Go in there and be the only guy in the room who speaks English as a first language, but it's great friendly service, cheap food, and you know it's authentic.

I'd put up a pic of the place if I could find it.

I used to go to this place called "El Tiempo" that made the best tacos. They'd put a small dollop of their amazing home made refried beans on top of the meat of your choice and top that with a generous sprinkling of finely chopped onion and cilantro. To this day, I'll still add a smidgen of beans to my tacos. Sadly the place closed many years ago.

Steven Bauer was a regular there. Guy still owes me dinner and a beer for giving him a ride home when his car broke down the last time I saw him. Of course, that was over 20 years ago, so I'm not holding my breath. It was funny seeing him on "Ray Donovan". It took me three episodes to recognize him.

From the local La Haciendita taco trailer. Tacos $1.50 each. The tortillas are made onsite. These are steak. If you can't order in espanol you have to point. Only open in the afternoon fri - sat-sun. Ill be eating there tomorrow. I know you've never heard of it.

/not really a food hipster but these tacos are excellent.

Interesting response to the Chipotle Juggernaut

I don't think they have it in them.

McDonald's doesn't either.

There used to be one in Charlottesville - a little Mexican store. You had to slide back through stacks of boxes and display cabinets to this little back room.

Inside was this little old man, sitting on an overturned paint bucket, managing several hot plates with simmering pots. The smell was incredible.

You needed to order in Spanish, cuz he spoke no English. Amazing food. Cheap, too.

I used to think alcohol gave me the shiats. But, once I did a little investigating, I found the culprit. The stack of Taco Bell receipts on the back floorboard of my car gave me my first clue. I looked at the time and date on each one. They were all on Saturday or Sunday mornings between 1 am and 4 am. I haven't touched the stuff since I solved my loose bowels mystery.
