In the interest of full disclosure, I have an uncle who had a fecal transplant.

He ruined his guts with years of over prescribed antibiotics.  He was facing having his colon removed.  I know my father went to see him in the hospital, so I really wonder if he was the donor.

We haven't been on speaking terms for years so I guess I'll never know.  And I'm really OK with that.

But gross factor aside, it can be a real alternative for people like my uncle.

2014-04-24 03:53:49 PM
Yes, it's gross.  But, it's also a very safe and extremely successful way of treating a life-threatening illness.  I donated a sample for my 9 y/o so last August and the changes in his health were noticable within one day.  One day!  That's after years of restrictive diets and expensive, potentially harmful meds.

When you're in that situation, you'll try anything.  When I started reading up on the success rate (over 93%) in clinical trials, it was a no-brainer.  This isn't quackery, this is medically tested and proven.

This. I've seen at least two cases of this done in the hospital to treat C. dff. Not sure why it's suddenly news.

There is the also preliminary research showing that fecal transplants can potentially be used for weight loss treatment, which is a new thing, but I don't see the article mentioning that at all.

"We found that delivery of a frozen, stored inoculum through a nasogastric tube is safe, acceptable to patients and as successful as delivery by colonoscopy - which requires a preparatory 'clean out,' sedation or anesthesia, and is quite costly," said Elizabeth Hohmann, senior author of the report, in a statement. It's gross but once you've got C.diff sometimes it's the only way to a large enough amount of the good bacteria (and the right mix) to repopulate.  I'd dunno if I'd rather do this or the poop pill.  The pill seems way more gross, but swallow and done vs having stuff jammed up your butt.

cgraves67: Don't you have to purge out the old bacteria before you bring in the new bacteria?

In cases where it's actually necessary, the whole problem to begin with is that the old bacteria got destroyed and depleted (usually due to overuse of antibiotics). When it gets to that point, the colon gets invaded by bad infectious bacteria. The point of the transplant is to reintroduce the original "healthy" colon bacteria, which will then outcompete and beat the infectious stuff out.

2014-04-24 04:04:20 PM
I tested positive for c.diff last year. Took three rounds of targeted antibiotics to get rid of it. If the poop pill helps, good.

I had a fecal matter transplant to treat ulcerative colitis. I still have to be careful not to eat certain things, and I might have to have it done again, but I haven't shat blood in months. It was no worse than having a colonoscopy, but I actually put weight on after I got the treatment. so if it's touted as a weight loss cure anytime soon, I'm calling BS.

2014-04-24 04:12:02 PM
You just need to not clean the toilet seat for a few months. Problem solved.

/ Wash your hands, though.

If your weight gain is caused by a bad balance of gut bacteria, rebalancing it to a healthy ratio is going to help you lose weight. Same principle for malnutrition, only in reverse.

You still gotta wonder, though, how long it took for a medical researcher to come up with this procedure to even test it.  They must have been down to pulling ideas out of their asses.

Activia could help them with production AND regulation.  At least that's what I think Jamie Lee is hinting about in those commercials...

There's now no comment about shiat or my ass that can either raise a smile or a wince. I've had to take notes on the consistency and content of every bowel movement for three years, so I've become really quite immune to all of it, sorry. Thanks for trying to cheer me up though.

How does one know wheter the weight gain is cause by bad colon bacteria? I assume there is no  poop test kit on your corner walgreens.
