...researchers looked at 60 years worth of climatological data from the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center, and found tornadoes touch down most often in "transition zones" - areas where a dramatic change in landscape takes place. In other words, where tall buildings end and farmlands begin, or where a forest stops and the plains start.

Obviously, we need to mitigate these risks by destroying all forests and farmlands.

I would think it's because aside from someone seeing and correctly identifying a tornado, a weak tornado could go uncounted if it doesn't do any noticeable damage.  (Un)fortunately, mobile homes are really easy to tear apart, so a weak tornado that might only take some shingles off and break windows in a well-constructed house could flip a trailer on its roof.

Nancy Gribble here for Death Watch '97. A level 5 tornado is headed right for Shiney Pines trailer park. Shiney Pines residents, we urge you to remain calm. But if you have any unfinished business, or if you have never experienced the miracle of lovemaking, now might be the time.

They're not, but the fact that tornadoes devastate buildings not on foundations really does a number on the ol' confirmation bias?

Because trailer parks are usually on the outskirts of town where tornadoes develop?

Just about every town I've lived in, trailer parks tend to be in the southwest corner of town too.

2014-04-24 02:21:55 PM
Where I live, its all that ugly track housing thats on the edge of town.  The trailer parks are closer to the middle.

Oklahoma tornadoes are like an Arkansas divorce - someone's gonna lose a trailer.

I was in Mississippi after Katrina. The manufactured housing, referred to as "trailers" held up much better than stick built and masonry structures. They may have been "relocated" but they were still intact.

Where I live, we're quite intimate with tornadoes. We get at least 1 a year, and usually have damage. Every 25 years or so, we lose a big chunk of town. But, in my recollection, not a single one of the trailer parks in town have ever been hit by tornadoes. Churches, Kroger, Walmart, the fairgrounds, all hit. Trailer parts? No damage.

"People always ask, 'Why do the people that who live in trailer parks always live in Tornado Alley?'

Why??!!??  WHY??!!? Because we're f*cking poor, that's why!

Land comes cheap if there's a 60% chance you're gonna f*cking die on it."

Those trailers were designed to be hauled around at 50mph.

This is stupid. No one could figure out... to learn how tornado magnets function, we'd have to know how regular magnets work in the first place.

Nancy Hicks Gribble here for Tornado Watch '97, brought to you by Mega Lo Mart. Mention that your home was destroyed and receive a free five-pound bag of onions. A series of tornadoes has touched down in Arlen County. So far there have been no reports of injuries or of injury footage, but if you know of someone who has been injured or is likely to be injured, please call this station.

More like tornado baseball bats when it comes to mobile homes, imo.

Hey, I managed to move from red to yellow.

I'm never again complaining about living in tornado alley though since I learned there was an Ebola Belt.

I've wondered about this.  Living the DFW area, it seems points west get hit, but not so much east.  I know storms travel west to east, but theoretically, where in the east/west track shouldn't matter UNLESS the storms weaken/change after hitting populated areas.  If that's indeed the case from the study, Dallas has a huge buffer thanks to Fort Worth.

farking tornado magnets, how do they work?

Look man, I've been in jail in Mexico. My father called me what's-his-face for seventeen horrifying years. My second wife tried to kill me with a Ronco Vegematic! My mother and I were in a tornado once. We were in a mobile home, and I think God must really hate mobile homes, Andy, cuz tornadoes always attack them first. They get very mobile.

And then  I was talking to my brother the other day about moving out west, and we were talking about how trailer parks attract tornadoes and he told me no, trailer parks create tornadoes. So I figured out that I'm like a trailer park"
"You're like a trailer park?"
"Yea, I don't attract psychotic women, I make women psychotic."
