Sounds like what they really wanted was to go to Epcot.

What kind of moron travels to a foreign country but wants it to be like home?

My mother in law.  Complained Italian ham (prosciutto) was "too thin and salty", the pasta (al dente) "too firm".

They should be glad they were just woken up by the Muslim prayer-screech rather than imprisoned for holding hands in public.

The only good reason to visit a Muslim country is to kill terrorists.

You went to a country willingly where they wipe their butts with their own hands and didn't expect them to behave like cave people?

that country has been stuck in the 13th century for well, 8 centuries.

That's why Vegas rules!

Italy, France, Paris, Monte Carlo, Egypt and the Carribean all within an easy Hoveround drive, and you can still make it to Deny's for the Early Bird Special

I think they have a good argument. It would be similar to a travel agent booking you in to a hotel they knew would be under construction etc. The Germans didn't even want all of their money back just half

If I was on a holiday vacation and was getting woken up by prayer calls starting at 6AM and repeated 5 times a day I would be kind of pissed off too. Especially if they expressed that they wanted to have a relaxing quiet place to stay etc.

Ha. Went to Epcot the year it opened back in the '80s.

I was 13 years old, but I remember it was like Disney World without the whimsy.

This is true.  Fortunately, Turkey is a democratic secular constitutional republic.  But you still want to make sure you kill any terrorists you might see there.  Obviously.

CSB:

Stayed with friends in Istanbul a couple of years back.  Left the window open in the guest room to get some air while I slept.  At 6 am I was rocked awake by the call to prayer from the local mosque.

OK, not all that CSB...

Folks need to get over themselves and understand that stuff happens differently in different countries.

The problem is that much of the Turkish coast is very touristy and many people don't take the prime tourist destinations seriously as foreign countries. To many it is just a generic Mediterranean holiday and it would not surprise me if they didn't give a shiat if the hotel they booked was in Turkey or Spain.

Pretty much anyone that thinks a cruise or an all-inclusive is a good idea- They want the sun and sand, but heaven forbid they have to interact with the locals beyond Pedro serving them Margaritas.

I found it vaguely exotic and interesting when I was there. Well, for the first couple of days. After that you just want to climb up the pole with the speaker on it, hook up a stereo and play the opening theme to the Lion King five times a day instead.

It's still nowhere near as annoying as the damn church bells in Provence or Tuscany or other such places.

The call to prayer in Turkey is pretty damned annoying, broadcast (from pretty every mosque, and there are many) over huge loudspeakers so you can hear it even over a mile away, inside, with earplugs. It's NOT subtle, or in my opinion very spiritual.

If, for example, your previous experience with call to prayer had been in Sarajevo, where it's much less intrusive and somehow a bit more dignified, I guess that would be a shock.

It would take serious lack of self-awareness to ask anyone for a refund over it though. Anyone of the faith or sympathetic would pretty much think you were a contemptible infidel dog for criticizing it, and anyone not would think you were an idiot for travelling without doing any research at all into the local customs.

Hell, I was in Turkey about 3 months and grew to really hate the call to prayer there, most especially the early morning one, and I don't have any sympathy for these twats.

/Farkers be warned: Turkish beer sucks and costs a lot of money. And the call to prayer will annoy you so much you'll buy it anyway, so you'll have a headache for the next morning's call.

The travel agent did tell them they'd be in the center of town - kind of a warning. Not exactly spelling out the situation if they don't know how strict the town is religion wise.

Too much praying, not enough fisting.

2014-04-24 02:47:34 PM
You'd think that the call to prayer would be sort of outdated in places where they have cell phones. Just set your alarm, BAM, now you know what time to pray. No need for loud ass speakers. That's expensive as hell. shiat, is there an app for that? I should make a call to prayer app. It could use the phone's GPS to know exactly where the sun is where you are and adjust the alarm accordingly. It could even have a compass to show you the direction of Mecca!

2014-04-24 02:50:26 PM
I spent a week in Bethlehem and the call to prayer was a cacophony of noise. Each masque had the volume turned up to 11 and they started at different times so everything was slightly out of synch, several times over. It is strange to hear those calls coming from every direction several times a day. At noon, when the churches cut loose with the bells, it really got competitive. We were across the street from one masque and the speaker was aimed right at our window. I kinda thought it added to the whole exotic atmosphere of the place.

Then you got ripped off.  50cl (a little over a pint) of Bomonti is $4 or $5 in most bars in Istanbul.
