While I'm always fine with a good "TSA gets their comeuppance" story, in this case I have to ask: what's going to happen to breast milk if you x-ray it?

The x-rays can degrade the quality of the proteins in the milk. If a mutation were to occur, you could end up causing your child to develop cancer.

Just Googling around a bit the consensus seems to be that there's no danger from an X-ray to breast milk (whether in the bottle or the breast).  That being said, the TSA apparently does have a different procedure available, so if they didn't follow it, that falls on them.  The better way to handle it would be to just mandate that breast milk is scanned like everything else.

When i was breastfeeding and had overflow I would hand pump my milk and store it in glass bottles in the freezer. My doctor told me that micro waving would denature the milk.

The protein in eggs denature when you heat them, as well.

I'd advice you to never ingest heated eggs ever again.

It will, but so will the stove, or anything else that makes it too hot -- it's not the method of energy application, it's the temperature.

For reference, the pasteurization process for commercial milk is specifically intended to denature proteins in (living things in) the milk. But temperatures for that process are closer to 72°C, rather than the 37°C you're shooting for with infant food.

Yes. But frequently people expect their infants to get useful whole proteins from milk (e.g. antibodies). And of course non-protein things like vitamin C are subject to thermal degradation as well.

"Denatured" doesn't mean "toxic" but it can still be undesirable. On the bright side, it has nothing in particular to do with microwaves (or x-rays for that matter).

I found this on AZCentral:
The Health Psychics Society, which studies the effects of radiation, says that it's safe to bring bottles through the X-ray machines used in airports because the minute amounts of radiation from such things as airport scanners and medical diagnostic procedures do not harm breast milk.

True story.

We just returned to CR from Vegas following step-daughter's wedding. We were going through the useless TSA routine (taking off shoes, putting shiat in bins) when one of those farking useless wastes of human life came up to me and said, very loudly "I SAID DON'T USE THOSE BINS. USE THESE!!!"

I told the puke stain that I hadn't heard him. To which he replied: "Oh, do you need a visual to help you figure it out?" and walked away.

When I finally got through and was able to collect my belongings, the worthless punkass piece of rubbish was standing at that location - doing nothing of any use to anyone on the planet, of course. My husband came up to me and asked if I was hanging in there okay.

And I responded (at the top of my lungs): "I'm doing GREAT, sweetheart. It thrills the shiat out of me to pay this COONT's salary."

That piece of shiat punkass nobody hung his empty head and walked away rather nervously.

Conclusion? They are all a bunch of worthless pieces of leeching fark, not fit to dust the shiat off of your shoes or mine. Farking hemorrhoids, the lot of them.

I farking despise the motherfarking TSA goons, the money this ridiculous theater costs and any shiatbag who supports what they do. Fark them. Fark ALL of them.

Although a relatively small amount of radiation compared to, say, Chernobyl, it is still radiation and will denature proteins.

The better question is why do we tolerate the TSA to exist when the only Americans who want them to exist are actually in the TSA?  I don't need to explain why this situation is ludicrous.  We all know it is.  I don't need to say they've never caught a terrorist.  We know they haven't.  I don't need to say they are worthless and a waste of money.  We know they are.

I know. I get rather snappy about it. I just hate being treated like a slave/criminal/chattel by a bunch of freeloading, fatass, cop-wanna-be, failures at life.

I once asked a sheriff at the airport why they don't just arrest the assholes for assault. He told me - straight up - it's because DHS gives their department lots of money and toys. That's it. He also acknowledged that they are not duly sworn law enforcement and what they do (or, more pointedly, HOW they do things) is likely illegal (in his eyes, anyway).

Made me just want to eat my own head.

I don't fly typically. Were it not the wedding of a close family member, I probably would have just stayed home.

I would love to be able to say the same, but if work says that I need to travel from MD to TX for a week meetings and conferences, they aren't going to pony up the cash for hotel stays, rental car fees, extra meals, and gas to drive.  They're gonna tell me to get my ass on that airplane whether I like it or not.

I use to have some sympathy for people traveling with kids until I was trapped in that metal tube with some one else's kid for 10+ hours while they were screaming or unhappy.
Its crazy to me that some how it became some social norm to just grin and excuse that bull crap. Oh, its OK, they are a baby.

It's not really about the x-rays.

This lady wanted to opt her breast milk out of an x-ray scan.  The TSA has an alternative procedure for this.  She did her homework beforehand and printed it out from the TSA website.  When she asked for this, she was denied.  When she objected, she was detained, aggressively searched, and denied the opportunity to even show the agents the printout of their own procedure.

Poorly trained agents used their jobs in a punitive fashion.

JoieD'Zen: When i was breastfeeding and had overflow I would hand pump my milk and store it in glass bottles in the freezer. My doctor told me that micro waving would denature the milk.
F*ck the TSA.

There would be some damage--too much energy.

Public Savant: /Protein is protein - the aminoacids stay the same and that is what the food gets broken down to before your intestines absorb them anyway...
/Feel free to educate the rest of the trailerpark about this.

Seconded.

James Rieper: It's not really about the x-rays.

Yup.  There was no reasonable reason for the refusal but I support the judgment anyway because of this.

Until the TSA can stop people from crawling over the fence and hiding in the wheel well, then all of this "You can't bring on a tube of toothpaste and we're going to x-ray your milk" crap is 100% useless.  I suspect it would be useless anyway, but right now, anyone that wants to carry a backpack full of explosives and put it on a plane can do it.

The bottom line is we only have the word of the contractors that built the rape-scanners and x-ray machines that they in fact safe. We could all be walking through Pryipat time Fukishima radiation levels and never know it until it's too late. This lady took a better safe than sorry tactic, in accordance with the rules set up by the TSA, and got pilloried for it. Glad to see she got something back.

/In the meanwhile, TSA has STILL never caught an actual terrorist or found a real bomb, improperly detained thousands, screwed up every time there were tested to see if they could find a bomb...but teenagers hang around the tarmac for hours then climb into wheel wells. The TSA is worthless and needs to be disbanded. Replace it with a duplicate of Irish or Israeli airport security.

Consider this: you have nobody's word that it is safe to walk down the street.  You could be walking through those same levels of radiation, and you wouldn't know until it was too late.  Tinfoil should protect you though.

Yeah?  Did ya?

Well, it isn't you  dumb motherf*ckers, is it?

So basically, people like her are the reasons why lines at airports are so long. "I want special treatment, the rules that apply to the rest of society doesn't apply to me."

The "rules" in question that apply to society are useless, insulting, piss weak and serve nothing but oppression.  That's how new countries get started.  Usually on the ashes of the one that was chock full of people who would kiss any ass thrust into their faces if it meant not inconvenienced.

The x-rays can degrade the quality of the proteins in the milk. If a mutation were to occur, you could end up causing your child to develop cancer.

The TSA causes cancer.

Could also turn into a breast milk based superhero, if I understand my comics right.

Yeah, just look at spider man. He can do whatever a spider can, hey listen bud he's got radioactive blood.

Not like its comes out of the TSA's budget. So why should they care.

itsaidwhat: Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Lady was birth hormone crazy. The total energy absorbed from those X-rays will not do anything. She should be more concerned about dragging children through a nasty airport & airplane.

My standard answer is.

I know that those x-rays aren't going to do shi'at. But she doesn't know that, all she knows is the people entrusted to tell the truth about such things lie reflexively. And she's right, they do lie. So really why blame her especially when the whole thing is a big waste of time and money?

Personally I think a lot of this has to do with, the people that run the TSA 'industry' know that if people start standing up to the TSA on a regular basis the whole thing falls apart and the gravy train comes to a stop. So the first overriding rule is, knuckle under 'citizen' and no questioning of the utility of what they do will be entertained, ever.

1.  Airport X-ray machines have an exposure far lower than the exposure you will get during your flight at 30,000 feet.  If you don't have some sort of method that you will use to shield your belongings while you are on board the aircraft, you have no stance to complain about the x-rays from the airport machines.

2.  Did a doctor tell you not to X-ray breast milk?  If so, I can already tell this is a doctor that didn't got to any reputable medical school.

The TSA brought this upon themselves by setting up an unnecessary procedure for breast milk, and then failing to follow it.

X-rays are, of course, harmless to milk.  Had their procedure been that the milk either goes through the machine or doesn't get on the plane, there wouldn't have been an issue.  Their entire liquids procedure is utterly stupid, so no surprise that their exception to that procedure is also stupid.

JuggleGeek: Until the TSA can stop people from crawling over the fence and hiding in the wheel well

Uh, that's not really their job.  Individual airports are responsible for an overall security plan and the TSA does what is mandated by Congress: passenger screening and baggage screening.

It doesn't matter.  If anyone who wants to blow up a plane can crawl over the fence, shove a bag of explosives into the wheelwell, and nobody is going to stop him, then the TSA has no farking business groping grandma and telling people they can't bring a bottle of water on board the plane.

They are doing a bunch of invasive crap that does absolutely no good, and they say it's "in the name of safety".  But in actual fact, anyone that wants to blow up a plane can do it, easily.

I've also never been told walking the street was perfectly safe. Yet the TSA and Rapidscan insist the xray machines are safe for everyone - children, the elderly, the pregnant, the immuno-compromised, even the TSA staff standing near them for hours at a time -based upon Rapidscan's own internal testing, although they refuse to allow anyone else to independently verify this claim. Curious that.

Life indeed isn't safe, but it doesn't go out of its way to make a profit by undermining what little safety I do have.

A settlement is much worse than a ruling because it has no effect whatsoever on the legal system. This is bullshiat capitulation by the complainant.
