ITS AN OUTRAGE! This ref is a fan of the Nordiques and HATES the Canadians.

I've long felt that MacLean has views that are just as obnoxious, sometimes bigoted, and overly nationalistic as Cherry does.  It's just that he's more quiet and polite about the way he expresses himself, and he gets overshadowed because Cherry is such a loudmouth who absorbs all the limelight.

But MacLean doesn't often disagree with Cherry.  He eggs him on.

To be fair the officiating was crap in Montreal, twice.  (No it would no have changed the outcome of the series, but it may have added a game, maybe)  If he had said "local" instead of "French" this would not have been an issue.  Oh who am I kidding, it still would cause a shiatstorm. Because Richard. Or something.  *yawn*

^ this. lots of calls went against the lightning - some seemed so blatantly wrong.

I don't get this controversy. It's not because the referee wanted the Habs to win... it's because the NHL/NBC wants the last Canadian team and the subsequent ratings still in the playoffs. Same with Pittsburgh/Columbus. Ratings are shiat anyways in Tampa/Columbus compared to Pittsburgh/Montreal, so do the math.

Fortunately for that great little team in Columbus, they're lining up against M.A. Fleury. Stick it to the man.

If the Lightning wanted to be in the series, they should have won a home game or two.

If this was the world cup of soccer. when two nations play there are no refs allowed from either nation. Yet in quebec AND ONLY IN QUEBEC is this considered racism or some other form of hate.

Get over it.

So no Toronto officials should be allowed to ref the Cup Finals since they would obviously be biased against successful hockey teams.

I had a conversation about this with a co-worker.  We both agreed that anyone could have screwed up some of those calls(especially the goal), but the fact that this was a French-Canadian ref in his first ever NHL playoffs just gives everyone a bad impression.  The league office dropped the ball on the assignments here, Charron should have been put out west working the Stars/Ducks.  No I'm not saying he botched things deliberately, but the optics suck and the fact that he was the one who waived off the game 3 goal only makes it worse.

Sort of.  This is true, however, the complication is that there isn't an entire world full of officials to choose from.  In the NHL, you're pretty much limited to:

1.  American
2.  English-Canadian
3.  French-Canadian

Now pick two officials who won't be potentially biased at all based on their geography in a game between Tampa and Montreal.  Any suggestions?

The outrage in this case is somewhat justified (and I'm a Bruins fan!) because this issue would never have even come up if it weren't involving the French.

From what I've seen, a vast majority of fans of NHL teams think that:

A) all NHL officials are the worst ever, and

B) the officials are out to make sure their team loses.

RumsfeldsReplacement:   Any suggestions?

Refs from Any province other than quebec and refs from any state other than florida. Bingo bango done and done. Nobody can complain on any side.

Anglophobe Quebecer here. I just don't know why McLean felt it needed to be said. As far as I can tell, you never hear people complain about this type I thing in the NHL unless it involves the Habs and Québécois (read: French) refs. Am I wrong? Has anyone ever complained about a referee from BC officiating a Canucks game? Even when he clarifies that he meant "local" and not French specifically, I just don't hear about that type of controversy elsewhere.

This.

It's an easy excuse for explaining why your team lost. Can't say I've never done it. It just seems like it's only the Quebec refs that get blamed for fixing it for "their" team. Elsewhere it's always just because the ref is an idiot.

So totally this. The third tenet of the Hockey Fan's Creed is:

No matter how vicious the foul, some fan will defend it.

See: Bertuzzi, Todd, just to pick one example.

Let's try and be fair about this.

Good point. Maybe I just notice it more in NHL because I pay more attention there.

This was blatant even by NHL standards. I could see there was no way they were going to let Tampa win that game. And I was cheering for Montreal.

The offside call against Stamkos when he would have gone on a complete breakaway in game 3 was really bad considering what they were letting the Habs get away with in that game.

I don't like the argument that reffing doesn't decide a series because a team shouldn't have to overcome a handicap of unfair reffing.  That said, Montreal heartily outplayed Tampa all the way.

as a Flames fan, allow me to play Tampa Bay the world's tiniest violin for Lightning fans upset about a goal called off.

Not too surprising that Quebec is again the focus of linguistic controversy...in the 1970s, a woman's
family sued the hospital where she was a patient because she "didn't die in French".  (They didn't
give her a French-speaking nurse.)

That call could have gone either way, Saturdays was a farking gong show.
