"I don't use pine tar. It's dirt," Pineda said on April 10. "I'm sweating on my hand too much in-between innings."

It actually was discreet compared to the last time he pitched against the Sox.

Nearly all pitchers use a lil' somethin, especially on cool nights. Usually opposing managers don't have a problem with it since A) their guys do it too and B) its not actually doctoring the ball or affecting its movement; it just allows the pitcher to get a better grip.

The problem here was 1) Pineda was clearly struggling with grip in the first inning without it, 2) it was Pineda whom everyone was watching closely since last time and 3) that was pretty farking blatant.

I think that third point mattered more than the others.

Spit? No.
Vaseline? Yes.

And the announcer seems either stupid or was a pitcher, if he has a better grip it allows a better snap to a curve/slider but it doesn't seem to be doing him much good since he was losing.

Well, in this case it's not so much about an edge as it is overcoming a handicap of conditions. Not defending Pineda, since Lackey didn't seem to be having any problems.

/didn't help that Jeter looked 60 years old in the field out there tonight, either

Incidentally, there's a weird error on that page, where 8.02(a) gets repeated twice, and the second (with a different penalty) appears to be the minor league rules (but that isn't made clear).

Doesn't really matter anyway, since he violated (b) not (a), but it caused a bunch of twitter confusion earlier.

He was struggling with command in the first (when the runs scored) and didn't have anything. It was in the second that he came out all goopynecked.
Again, pine tar doesn't do anything to the ball itself, vis it's own movement once thrown (like other methods of doctoring may), it just helps it not slip in the hand.
Really though, that's something you're supposed to be able to deal with.

I saw Michael Pineda pitch his Major League debut right here in Seattle, and saw him a couple of times after that. The thing is that dude does not need to cheat. He pitches with power and location, and has the potential to be an ace on or 2nd starter on any team in the majors.

He really is that good.

Well it makes sense why they scored early but the extra grip would give a little extra snap on the ball to guarantee its gonna break. All those balls that are hanging curve balls are just balls that slipped out just a bit too soon which left them up in the zone just a little too long. Then they get deposited in the 2nd deck.

Extra grip does help quite a bit when pitching since it helps you hold the ball until you are ready to release it.

Oh go blow it out your ass, you hypocritical idiot.  Nobody would give a crap if Pineda wasn't being so blatant about it.  Does your girlfriend ever get jealous because instead of thinking about her to get your dick hard, you think about hating the Yankees?

2014-04-24 01:37:35 AM
Sports radio in Boston decided that the Yankees, by being so blatant, forced the Red Sox to call out Pineda so the Yankees will have credibility calling out Red Sox pitchers (Buchholz?) for the same thing during the rest of the season.

Which is of course what a team would do right after they probably are going to lose another starter to Tommy John surgery.  Makes sense.  Almost too much sense...

Well, only thing correct about that is that Girardi absolutely will be a pain in the ass about this for the rest of the year. If a Red Sox pitcher has so much as a sunburn, Joe will probably ask an ump to take a look at it.

Now, I don't doubt that -someone- in the dugout, maybe Rothschild, between the 1st and 2nd told Pineda to do -something- (wink) about his control, but the genius plot to smear it on his neck.. that had to be his own doing. I can't fathom someone else telling him to do exactly that and thinking it was a good idea.

I was watching the game last night almost solely to see this happen. In the first inning when he was getting rocked and the command wasn't there it was the first thing that came to mind but I didn't see anything. Then of course the entire world saw it after that. David Ortiz coming out of the clubhouse from seeing it on TV, laughing, and telling everyone about it was somewhat funny too.

A PR move by the Red Sox. They stopped one guy from using pine tar to help his grip for one game, forcing MLB to confront the issue head-on about what is allowable and what isn't. So the Yankees lose one pitcher for one start, while the Red Sox basically lose two pitchers for the entire year since both Lester and Buchholz are known heavy cheaters with suntan lotion and rosin. What will be interesting to see is how many Red Sox pitchers actually cheat and if this is something Thornton and or Ellsbury told the Yankees about.
