My grandfather was a dentist. Told me I had really strong teeth. Yellow, but strong.

Unfortunately that meant the dentist who pulled my wisdom teeth had to practically stand on my chest when yanking them out with the pliers.

Dental thread, so here's where I remind everyone that it is not enough to brush and floss regularly.   You gotta get the cleanings.

Unless you want to spend $1,000s on dental work, including the ever popular quadruple root canal (for added fun performed on four different occasions).

Well this certainly helps me get off of my ass and get to a dentist to have that broken tooth pulled out. I farking hate finding a new dentist when I move. I've had trouble with my teeth since childhood--seems to be some sort of genetic defect because there are others in my family on one side that have had the same issue--no matter how much you brush, floss and get cleanings, there's always something wrong that requires a drill.

Anyway, stories like this don't help.

I work with a guy who had all his teeth pulled. Watching him gum beef-a-roni has vastly improved the care I  show my teeth, and saved me a fortune over the last 8 years. And will continue to pay dividends well into the future.

I'm going to buy him lunch  tomorrow for the rest of the week.

They're so darn expensive. I wish I didn't go through them to get my dentures (I got full uppers and partial lowers... STILL not taking care of my teeth like I should, may need to get another one pulled on the bottom and readjust my lower... That's my own stupidity though, so can't blame anyone but myself). Would have been a hell of a lot cheaper to go elsewhere, but then again, I didn't think I'd get fired from my previous job after signing up for the loan either.

Why would a 23 y/o go to a dental office named Same Day Dentures and then NOT expect to get dentures? That is what that dentist does--it's in the name!! Why would he go back the next day after the dude TOLD him he would pull all his teeth out, especially so be he didn't even do XRays.

I'm not sure all dentists are legit. Why would a healthy person need to have their teeth cleaned every 3 months? Why would a dentist deny your cleanings every 6 months until he has 5 of your healthy teeth pulled so you are forced to buy implants at $5,000 a tooth?

Oh, God, me too. I was out for it, but my Godmother (who was my ride home) told me all about it. The dentist told me he was afraid he was going to break my jaw. He had to chisel the lower ones out in pieces.

I've always been told that teeth need to be cleaned every 6 months, and my implant will cost $3k this coming July.

I have complicated, rambling thoughts about any profession that bids you come around regularly. Simply: never ask a barber if you need a haircut.

There's no evidence that visiting the dentist more than once a year has any benefit, except if you have already been diagnosed with a condition requiring more frequent attention. But your denti$t will tell you you need to visit every 3-6 month$.

What I was referring to was the practice of some dentists (that I am personally aware of) to deny insurance reimbursement for teeth cleanings every 6 months unless you have your healthy teeth extracted, followed by their expensive implants. And $3,000 per tooth is not cheap.

I worked for a dentist back in the 90's with a patient that required dentures before she was 30.  She had been a binge eater/barfer for years in her late teens, and so eroded her teeth, they were just crumbling away.  It was either pull and replace with dentures for about $1500 total, or root canals, posts & cores, and crowns for about $2000 per tooth, or pull and implants for about $2500-$4000 per tooth.  Her mom paid for extractions and dentures and then cried in the waiting room the whole time.  She blamed herself, rather than realizing her kid was mental.

Goes for pets too.  Don't look at me like it makes no sense when I tell you that your 13 year old dog needs not just one dental when his teeth are about to fall out of his mouth but might benefit from a yearly prophylactic cleaning.  You don't even brush and floss his teeth like you do yours.  Think about it.

Yeah, last one I had out, the dentist was practically standing on the arms of the chair trying to wrench it out. Had to drill it in half, chisel it a bit and pull it out in pieces. Shards of tooth worked their way out my gums for about 6 months afterwards.

same here.  it was 1967.  The dentist was this old, mean farker...he would hold this farking HUGE barrel syringe in front of you with the needle on it.....if you cried, he would smack you across the face.  if you didn't stop crying he'd smack you with the other hand.  then he'd bring in more people and they would hold you down.  this was in the town i grew up in.  when i returned to this area, I heard  that he died a horrible, painful death.
