Xythero: I've never seen the Sopranos, but it's usually mentioned as one of the shows kicking off the "Golden Age of Television."  I suppose that would make it a classic, or at least historically important.

Yeah, basically television was (relatively speaking) completely awful before the Sopranos. What were the best shows on TV in  the decade before the Sopranos? Law & Order? E.R.? Different flavors of Star Trek or various David E. Kelly shows? Come on. All of them were vastly inferior to the Sopranos, and the Sopranos itself has since been surpassed by other shows. The Sopranos showed people that TV writing could be as good as good movie writing. Nothing else at the time was even in its ballpark.

marcre3363: I bought the entire box set of "The Wire" last year. Finally got around to starting it yesterday.

I'm on episode 3 right now. So far, pretty solid.

"Prime members can enjoy a collection of great HBO shows on an unlimited basis, at no additional cost to their Prime membership," said Brad Beale, director of content acquisition for Amazon.
The first batch of shows will be available on Prime Instant Video starting on May 21.

And here I was just the other day thinking about how nice it would be to revisit The Wire.

For those hating on season 2 of The Wire you're missing the point that season 2 focuses on the money angle.
You need to follow the money and it shows that the influence of the inner city drug trade reaches far beyond the inner city.

The Wire season 2 also had arguably the best scene of the entire series: Omar in the courtroom. Another mild spoiler.

redmid17: Johnny Texas: notarobot: Amazon already does this.

What?  No they don't.

Yep Amazon searches for "Game of Thrones season 4" yields a nice chunk of already released DVDs and the ability to purchase streaming episodes from seasons 1-3.

I think he wants to purchase season 4 episodes 24 hours after they air, like they do with most other shows.

Johnny Texas: Online streaming is the one place where it seems that competition is a bad thing.  There's no way you can sign up for any one or even any two services and have access to everything.

Even with the increases to Netflix and Amazon, those and Hulu works out to $26 a month, still less than any basic cable package.

Trust me on this one...there are only four seasons...there was never a 5th season...

Sort of like Weeds, Dexter, LOST, The Simpsons.......

Oz.

Babylon 5.

We all know that is just steps one and two to get to the one real show that's gonna load Amazon with boatloads of cash:

So 3 year old or older HBO is good, but the streaming service is still essentially worthless for my needs until Amazon comes out with an Android client. Yeah, we know, you want to push Kindles.

I never watched The Sopranos, but if you don't think The Wire is a classic, subby, I'd be very curious to know what you think is.
