Cyno01: Johnny Texas: Online streaming is the one place where it seems that competition is a bad thing.  There's no way you can sign up for any one or even any two services and have access to everything.

Even with the increases to Netflix and Amazon, those and Hulu works out to $26 a month, still less than any basic cable package.

Yep, we dropped direcTV and pay $20 a month for two Xfinity HD recievers, on demand captures all the network shows we watch. With Rokus and various gaming consoles throughout the house we use Netflix and Hulu and have more shows than we can watch for a lot less than we were paying before.

This is bonus since we had prime already.

Is it sad that I have been wanting B5 to be offered on one of the streaming services so I can rewatch  them even though I have all 5 seasons on DVD?

Angela Lansbury's Merkin: JerseyTim: And yet they refuse to rerun old episodes of Encyclopedia Brown.

There was a TV version of Encyclopedia Brown?  I remember the books from elementary school.  Was the show any good?  What age group was it targeted at.

There's a whole episode online.

They only did 10 episodes. If they had a DVD set, I'd keep it on my mantle next to my sword honoring Stonewall Jackson for his heroics at the First Battle of Bull Run given to him in 1861.

Johnny Texas: I don't get why HBO wouldn't offer recent episodes of their series as a part of this deal.  If they charged $4 for an episode of Game of Thrones, that would mean that you'd be paying $16 a month, around the same as most cable and satellite subscribers pay for a month of HBO.   Must have something to do with the cable companies applying pressure as it would certainly lead to more people ditching cable and hurting their profits.

You're on the right track.  This would be fantastic for consumers, but it blows up the existing (and extremely lucrative) licensing arrangements that HBO has with the cable companies.  That's their cash cow, and at this point, I'm sure they don't believe it to be economically wise for them to kill it just yet.  Not to mention the fact that the cable contracts come with a gigantic guaranteed install base - boatloads of people who wouldn't need to buy another box to use the service - and pretty soon it becomes clear where the path of least resistance lies.

One of my all time favorites. I'm just sad that the colossal budget that the show required compressed the story of season 2 so much. I mean, there were at least 2 seasons worth of story and events just crammed into it. I mean the battle of Actium could have taken an entire hour rather than showing 3 minutes of drama with Cleopatra retreating.

S1 is pretty weak, but stick with it, it sets up everything for the next three seasons of awesome. S5 isnt terrible, but they got renewed for it after wrapping everything up so they didnt know wtf they were doing with it. The CGI is really cheesy and outdated at this point though.

The first season of Babylon 5 feels like a chore the first time watching it. The series doesn't really pick up until 3 or 4 episodes into the second season.....

.... But after you watch the whole series you'll go back and have a much better appreciation of season 1.

Not season 5 though. Skip the first half of that. Fark Byron and his emo telepaths.

No, Weeds and Dexter's last season were terrible because the writers ran out of ideas.
The last season of the Wire focuses on something a little different that the previous 4 seasons but it's definitely not terrible nor poorly written, just different.

That is probably true. Itunes does that for a lot of shows. Amazon might too (not sure as I have a DVR and usually record shows I want to watch later). That doesn't change the fact he was dead wrong about them being available for purchase after 24 hours of air time. If they did that, then maybe the piracy numbers wouldn't have hit record breaking levels yet*

*doubtful. That show is awesome

The shipping can still be worth it, the streaming is just the cherry on top. You have to figure in the two day shipping benefit with Prime.   My wife loves using that now to buy stuff, and have it shipped to the office.  Last year along, I probably got my money's worth on the free shipping.

Not going to lie, if there is some kind of chore or task that needs to be done in the near future and I need supplies, I will almost always order off Amazon if I don't have it in stock. It comes directly to my door and the price is equal if not better. I love it for pre-orders of books too.

Needs more Deadwood.  Feed them to the pigs Wu!

Prime is the best deal around, and this makes it better.  I checked last night and I'm at 68 orders for 2014, I even order dog food on there now.

The new Amazon TV box is pretty solid too, it's far faster than Apple and the voice controlled remote even found "Aziz Ansari" with no problem.

That is a part of it, but HBO is running test groups with cable companies, where for 15 dollars a month, you get hbo and local channels, plus the use of HBO2g0 on all their devices, it is being marketed towards the cable cutters.

The first batch of shows will be available on Prime Instant Video starting on May 21.

And here I was just the other day thinking about how nice it would be to revisit The Wire.

I watched the whole damn thing for a second time when I first hooked up with my partner about three years ago, as he hadn't seen it. Even though it had been years since I first watched, it was a much richer experience the second time around.

My partner was hesitant because he hates "cop shows," but once he realized it's a story about a city, he became an enthusiastic fan.
