"Prime members can enjoy a collection of great HBO shows on an unlimited basis, at no additional cost to their Prime membership," said Brad Beale, director of content acquisition for Amazon.
The first batch of shows will be available on Prime Instant Video starting on May 21.

And here I was just the other day thinking about how nice it would be to revisit The Wire.

And yet they refuse to rerun old episodes of Encyclopedia Brown.

Oh, indeed.

2014-04-23 11:32:42 AM
Damn - I just paid to own all these shows through amazon streaming like 6 months ago.

2014-04-23 11:32:45 AM
they're both bona fide classics. and two of the best series ever produced.

I never watched The Sopranos, but if you don't think The Wire is a classic, subby, I'd be very curious to know what you think is.

If I'm reading subby correctly, I think his problem isn't so much with the quality of the shows but the aging. "Classic" usually refers to something good that is also older. Though he might be surprised to learn that those shows both ended more than 5 years ago.

I bought the entire box set of "The Wire" last year. Finally got around to starting it yesterday.

I'm on episode 3 right now. So far, pretty solid.

Sopranos is definitely a classic, subby

W00T!!!!

I've almost rented/purchased these so many times!!!!  Prime is awesome.  If they ever take away the monthly auto order thingy for necessities, I shall be very sad.

I haven't had HBO in forever, so I'll have a whole winter weekend setup to watch now!

Nice, I have always heard good  things about The Wire.  Now I will get a chance to actually see it.

Any word on OZ?

Those shows aren't too new to be classics you're just old.

Trust me on this one...there are only four seasons...there was never a 5th season...

So 3 year old or older HBO is good, but the streaming service is still essentially worthless for my needs until Amazon comes out with an Android client. Yeah, we know, you want to push Kindles.

Yeah that was kind of annoying. My kindle was stolen a few weeks ago, and I went to install an android client on my phone and "new tablet" (old Evo 4g) only to find that they were "incompatible." I understand I can watch it on my laptop, but Amazon prime video to my chromecast would be pretty sweet to have, especially on work trips.

Granted this doesnt include anything thats still ongoing like GoT and True Detective, but this is worth the extra $20 a year, especially considering id pay probably $15 a month for HBOGo if i could.

I've never seen the Sopranos, but it's usually mentioned as one of the shows kicking off the "Golden Age of Television."  I suppose that would make it a classic, or at least historically important.

So when is Canada going to get Instant Video as part of prime. I have been a prime member for just under a year and it is pretty handy for the shipping. If I could get shows as part of it, it would be even better. Hell even if I could just get those shows that Amazon produces I would be happy.

meh. The fifth season was by far the weakest, but it wasn't exactly atrocious.  Although, since season four may have been my favorite (well, maybe season 1), it was a let down.

Yeah, basically television was (relatively speaking) completely awful before the Sopranos. What were the best shows on TV in  the decade before the Sopranos? Law & Order? E.R.? Different flavors of Star Trek or various David E. Kelly shows? Come on. All of them were vastly inferior to the Sopranos, and the Sopranos itself has since been surpassed by other shows. The Sopranos showed people that TV writing could be as good as good movie writing. Nothing else at the time was even in its ballpark.

Agreed, The Wire's like a fine wine - just more and more flavor as you get into the storylines.

However, one thing that bothers me is their cellphones.   Seemed like they never used them for voice calls.  Did anyone else notice this?

Yeah I'd go 1 - 4 - 2 - 3.  I thought 5 was horrible except for the ending montage

Johnny Texas: Online streaming is the one place where it seems that competition is a bad thing.  There's no way you can sign up for any one or even any two services and have access to everything.

Even with the increases to Netflix and Amazon, those and Hulu works out to $26 a month, still less than any basic cable package.

There was a TV version of Encyclopedia Brown?  I remember the books from elementary school.  Was the show any good?  What age group was it targeted at.

I doubt well ever see The Wire on BD. It was filmed in 4:3 by choice. It was shot on film, but its probably too niche to warrant a HD rescan.

I just started watching the Sopranos... and it's pretty bad.  James Gandolfini and the mob business is fine, but when his wife or kids start drama it's just terrible.    And so far it's a pretty even split between potentially good mob stuff and terrible family drama.

Does it get better?
