I'd be embarrassed that they thought they needed to tell me that.

ok listen I want to have an enjoyable cheerleader thread here! But this sounds exactly like some bs work place rules that a union would put in place. The only differences are that the rules the union would put in place would include facilities on site, paid time to do it, and a shop steward to supervise the work.

I would pay union dues to have that job.

Good guess but nobody has said anything like that. Also there were only four posts before you jumped in here feigning outrage, so it seems kinda lazy that you couldn't at least skim through them before posting.

Asking for what? Shiatty working conditions? Look, I hope every one of these lawsuits is decided in the cheerleaders' favors with extreme prejudice. But don't ask me to pretend to overlook the fact that these women are choosing a job that would have a more honest title if it were called Masturbation Fantasy.

Oh no, not outraged at all; "mildly annoyed" is more like it. But yeah, when a story about egregious workplace violations of basic dignity immediately garners these types of replies because the alleged victims happen to be attractive women, it's a bit pathetic.

well they get to see all the games! You know how much season tickets to a NFL team is? Plus travel and room and board. Most have access to the same training facilities as the players! you gots to keep those abs tight! And really most of the ladies do it as a resume builder.

Then there is admiration of random guys on the internet! That's worth more than gold right?

It may also be because it's a lot more fun to talk about beautiful, scantily clad women than employment law. For the record I do hope they win their lawsuit and it's been a long time coming.

If you're not getting paid is it really employment? And do volunteers have the same rights? I mean they are already have been hired based on looks which I hear is a no-no and they only hire women which is another no-no.

Not asking that at all. Cheerleaders are there to look pretty and get the crowd motivated (literally and/or metaphorically), and I don't doubt that they're aware of this when they get into it as a profession (or even before then). All I'm saying is that this fact doesn't mean their legitimate grievances shouldn't be taken seriously.

Look, I'll be perfectly honest with you guys, a year ago, I might have been jumping in on the pic posts and joking around. Thing is, my daughter (our first kid) will be born in a few months, and I'm finding myself increasingly sensitive (perhaps overly so) to this kind of stuff; I don't know what she'll want to do with her life, but whatever she chooses, I guess I just hate the idea of her being exploited.

I'll grant that my reply may have been a bit quick and judgmental, but man... when you see the kind of crap your unborn kid will have to, to some extent, face as they go through life, I guess it gets all too easy to become defensive.

Only a handful of cities have anything close to a ban on appearance-based discrimination (Buffalo isn't one of them) and those would generally not apply in this case because attractiveness would be a BFOQ - bona fide occupational qualification.

and they only hire women which is another no-no.

Again, no. Cheerleaders are, by definition, performers. Performers aren't subject to the same rules like that. Same reason Disney doesn't have to hire men to play Cinderella at Disneyland.

Alright, that's a fair point. As I said, got a soon-to-be-born daughter, so it's likely that I was being a bit over-sensitive.

In most cases, they have to face the stands continuously throughout the game and don't get to actually see anything. Much like field security, they get fired if they turn around.

I think a cheerleader should be watching the game, at least somewhat.  it would help them know when it is and isn't appropriate to cheer.

They have a cheer coordinator - a cheerleaderleader, if you will - that tells them which cheers to do when.

You really didn't know that?

I sorry but if it's that bad quit. It's not like you're supporting your family on the paycheck! You're doing it for some other reason. Maybe it's the travel, maybe it's the attention maybe you're hoping to catch the eye of a modeling scout! But for whatever reason you're getting a benefit from it. Hell maybe you just like traveling with a bunch of really attractive women, sleeping in the same room together, doing each others hair, pillow fights...

Additional *potential* benefits are no reason to not pay someone.  Similarly:

"You should let us eat here for free, and we'll tell all our friends how great it was!"
"You should take our wedding pictures for free, and we'll refer all our friends to you!"
"You should shovel sh*t for us... you can have all the free fertilizer you want!"
"Come model for us, it might lead to other jobs!"

Nobody works for free.  Everybody deserves to be treated decent.  Plus, cheerleader pillow fights.  Crap.  I'll be in my bunk.

Do pro cheerleaders travel?

Some do a calendar in an exotic locale, not sure what other traveling they would be doing out of the local team's market.

Does anybody know?

The cheerleaders host an annual "Junior Jills" program in three cities, where young girls are taught the basics of cheering.

I wonder if they make them do the "jiggle test" and tell them how to wash their intimate areas.

Or they'll stick to calendar shoots, wholly run by subcontractors. Actually, could the cheer squad be subcontracted, such that the team simply licenses its logo and provides "office space", and the sub (heh) provides the ladies under whatever terms they like?
