I've never been able to figure out why this video of mine was so popular (~1.5 million views) nobody watches it anymore, but I wish I had the foresight to monetize it.

How do you monetize videos (that is, is it just something you need to click on when uploading)? And I wonder at what point the hits actually turn into something (i.e., how many hits will it take, for instance, to reach $1)?

Since we're all just sharing our videos here I'll show you mine. I always thought it'd get more views because of the kitten's trombone skills, but the internet is a fickle, fickle place.

Well subby, since very first one was put up there by one of the founders, and it's nothing but 19 seconds of mumbling about an elephant, I'd have to go with YES.

And I still like 'Charlie Bit my Finger'. I'd forgotten about the tootin' babies, that one at least made me chuckle. Too bad most of the music ones suck.

It helps if you have an adsense account... I have a million+ views on one of mine, and another 500K on another, but I never bothered because the million-view video was somebody else's source that I added my own audio to, and the other video was a mashup I created with Star Trek and the Trolololo guy, and some rights company came in and claimed "ownership" of my derivative work.

Now... I don't have an adsense account any more because they decided I was doing something shady when I used it to monetize one of my mobile apps, with all of $9 in the account. You'd think if I was a mastermind of click fraud, I'd be earning a lot more than that. Not sure what I did, since Google won't tell you what you did wrong, and any appeal is instantly sent back with "well, we reviewed your defense and found it lacking, so good bye" though I have no idea what I'm defending myself for.

Anyway...my recommendation is to go to Metacafe or some other video host that allows you to monetize and go through them. Google can't be trusted to ever do the right thing.

if it's any consolation.. your daughters 20,000 clicks probably did not count as UNIQUE clicks, so the evil bastards didn't make much money off you psychosis.

Half the list is "music" that was huge when it first came out but as is often the case with "pop music" it is much less likely than rock music to become a classic that withstands the test of time :-P

Wonder how many views that Bieber video would have if not for a legion of fangirls dedicated to reloading it over and over again just to push it up to where it is now.

It tells me something about that idiots real popularity when his most recent songs don't really sell nearly half as well as you would expect for somebody with a billion hits on a single video.

2014-04-24 08:55:15 AM
I've found that the more effort I put into a video, the less interested people are to see it. My crappiest videos are the most popular. My 3 highest viewed ones are me talking about the ending to The Prestiege, my review of Synecdoche, New York where I'm literally reading from a script... It was the first scripted video I've done and it was before I knew I had Windows Moviemaker where I can edit out all the errors and ums and ahs. I thought everyone on YT was just flawlessly articulate before that. And the 3rd video was a tag video (you make it and then tell x number of people to reply). This one was about suicide and I was really honest and open and talked about how I'm barely hanging on. I tagged 3 kinda big guys, and one makes animated videos. They all replied to to it - that one guy (somegreybloke) took the time to animate his reply. And so I got a lot of views from that. But with all my videos combined I don't even thing I have 20k views total

2014-04-24 08:59:51 AM
But know I have less that 100 subs and may are bits. If I make a video the same 3 people reply and go "great vid man". I've uploaded a few songs that get so comments but it nearly as many views as I'd imagine

Screw it, since we're all in the sharing spirit, I'll share my videos...all four of them...which are of close proximity fireworks shows (I'm a pyrotechnican). I really enjoy doing the shows...I'm hoping to pick up a much better video camera though for this summer.

They're all raw video (unedited) as I suck at editing. I'm slowly learning though.

I'll post them in order of relevance:

1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JeaRPA43W8 - Natal Day Fireworks show on the MacDonald Bridge that spans Halifax/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This was my very first show ever, pretty crazy.
2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi7koHQAa8c - My second ever show - the day after the Natal Day show. This was all HAND-FIRED, which was really intense (and fun!) I caught fire at one point.
3) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1lOrLXe-C0 - Dartmouth Christmas Tree Lighting as viewed from my helmet cam. Watch around the 0:58 second mark - the fireworks shoot INTO the water!
4)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0aoYiBqBEc - The same Dartmouth Christmas Tree Lighting as viewed from the audience. Poor quality as my wife had the baby with her.

For anyone interested in knowing, I'm not using a GoPro camera, I'm using something called the "Helmet Cam". It's actually a video camera that's for interior firefighting. It's supposed to be 1080p quality, but I've found that it doesn't work well in low-light situations. Since it mounts on the brim of your fire helmet, you end up losing the left or right perspective of the show (depending on which side it's mounted on).
