So, Russia's not a bastion of free speech?   SHOCKING!!

2014-04-23 11:26:11 AM
Versus America where they just willingly collaborate and then lie about it.

Oh yay!  Snowden's biggest cheerleader is here to jizz all over the thread and tell us how much the government invades our privacy and anyone who disagrees with him is just a democrat appologist.  woo!

2014-04-23 01:34:28 PM
Snowden sure picked a great place to hunker down.

2014-04-23 01:35:47 PM
Isn't it possible to cut off all internet access to/from Russia?  I'm asking for a friend. XD

I don't think he had lots of options.

/I'd gone to China personally

If by picked, you mean was stuck there when his passport was revoked in transit and the US showed it was willing to ground planes it suspected he was on to get him, then yes, he "picked" Russia.

2014-04-23 01:40:40 PM
Wasn't he supposed to go to Brazil at one time??

Anyone could have told you Russia wasn't in line with his thinking.

Moosecakes: Snowden sure picked a great place to hunker down.

Myth.

Snowden was stranded in Moscow. He did not choose to stay there.

Recall the plane forced to land in US-friendly territory because they suspected Snowden might be aboard? That gives an idea of the conditions he was living in. I wouldn't have gotten on any plane either if I were him.

This.  I don't particularly care about Snowden, and don't agree with the huge tinfoil-wearing crowd that does seem to care about him, but 'Hurrrrrrr, traitor because ruskies!' is the stupidest thing I've ever seen otherwise intelligent people try to push.

/note the qualifiers.  Anti-vaxxers and any number of Fw:Fw:Fw:Fw:Fw: e-mails are more stupid, but don't meet the qualifiers.

Didn't Putin personally assure Snowden recently that Russia doesn't do this type of thing?

Or they don't, shutdown over 'privacy concerns' when they don't get paid by the feds, and then we find out they're just incompetent.

LowbrowDeluxe: 'Hurrrrrrr, traitor because ruskies!' is the stupidest thing I've ever seen otherwise intelligent people try to push.

Honest question: Is this being pushed somewhere? For awhile I wondered if he might have been spying for Russia all along, and high-tailed it there when the sh*t hit the fan. Now I think he was just tremendously naive and ideological to the point of delusion, and he's paying a high price for it.

He probably thought he would have the same support from people who were against spying on Americans and who had privacy concerns during the Bush admin and that population would give him a level of public support where the situation would have played out differently. All you need to do is read a fark thread to see how that worked out.

I don't think he understood the ramifications of what would happen to him by leaking the information based on an NPR interview (Fresh Air?) I heard last week.

While this is bullshait, anyone who trusts a Facebook site given their record of privacy abuses is kind of an idiot.

An honest evaluation of Edward Snowden would have to say that he did a valuable job in whistle-blowing the NSA's violations of everyone's privacy...but everything he's done since then has been dumb as hell.

The only dumb thing Snowden did was to allow his name to get out before he got to a country without an extradition treaty with the US.

How's this?

"Putin decides what he wants to do and does it in half a day. He makes a decision and executes it quickly and everybody reacts. That's what you call a real leader." - R Giuliani

"people look at Putin as one who wrestles bears and drills for oil, and our President wears mom jeans and equivocates." S Palin

Putin is "the lion of Christianity, the defender of Christian values, the president that's calling his nation back to embracing its identity as a nation founded on Christian values." B Fischer, AFA

It's like they want Obama to seem weak to the Russian people, that they don't respect weakness. ... There you got Putin, big, strong, muscular, on a horse. S Hannity

Russia has a real leader. ... And our President just is... he's incapable and unwilling to lead.R Peters

Not any better; their leaders don't really feel the need to engage the public (whereas Putin feels the need to engage the public and blatantly lie to their faces).

I like how you ignore Switzerland or a plethora of non-extradition treaty nations famous for being warm year round with awesome beaches full of mostly naked women.

No no , it's better to do media interviews BEFORE you have reached a safe place because of reasons.

Have said previously...  Doesn't matter how you feel about what the NSA/government was doing, make no mistake that a large part of Snowden's motive was attention whoring.
