Poland has actually disappeared from the map of Europe four times since the 1770s.  If any country has a right to be paranoid about invasion, Poland is at the top of the list.

Um, that would cost jobs for the various American defense contractors.  I have a better idea: the USA can put all of its current equipment into mothballs in the desert, then order brand new equipment from Raytheon, Lockheed, General Dynamics, etc.  Poland can also order all-new military hardware from those companies.

That way, a bunch of jobs will get created in key congressional districts.

Considering that all that Russia has is rusting Soviet era weapons they could probably repel an all out invasion with our toys. Short of a nuclear attack, which Putin trots out for every dispute.

When are we going to build out that antimissile shield for Europe? Oh yeah, Putin threatened to go nuclear before it was completed and we turned our backs on the Europeans.

I do know that.  Strategically, they are in the worst spot in Europe though from a military standpoint.  Exposed in the North to the Baltic, flat open terrain over much of the country, and sandwiched between multiple significant powers.  It doesn't take too much for a determined bordering enemy to overrun Poland.

They also had guarantees of sovereignty from the Western Allies prior to WWII.  Seeing how we treated the Russian annexation of Crimea, I'd be arming up too as the Poles.  They may have to beat the Russians again.

2014-04-23 11:24:25 AM
If Russia invades Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, or Latvia, World War III would start because they are all members of NATO and the US would treat an attack on any of them the same as an attack against the US itself (under Article 5 of the NATO treaty), which would mean US troops would be directly fighting Russian troops.

This also means that Russia won't actually do this, because Putin is not an idiot.  In a World War III scenario Russia would get it's ass kicked very quickly (although many thousands would probably die first), and Putin knows this.  Of course, that's assuming it doesn't go nuclear, which means nobody would win and many millions would die.

Note that Ukraine is not a NATO member so Russia feels free to fark with them.

Yeah, we should sell them some nukes and delivery systems.  It would be great to see Poland just once be able to tell a neighbor country JUST BACK THE FARK OFF RIGHT THE FARK NOW OR WE WILL BLOW YOUR ASSES STRAIGHT TO HELL

No argument there.  But Poland's economy is one of the strongest in the EU and they're willing to pay.  We should give them a very good deal on the best we have to offer.  Since the days of Walesa and the rise of the Solidarity movement, they have proven to be one of our best friends in that part of the world.

The primary reason for extending NATO membership to Poland, Ukraine, Georgia, the Baltic States, and other Eastern European countries is to create new markets for uS military equipment and more profits for US defense contractors.

Do people tell you those lies about missile defense, or do you just pull them out of your ass? All we did was shutdown a Bush-era boondoggle that was a) pissing off Russia and b) a LONG way from being implemented because of technical problems and instead c) put in place a sea-based system that did what we wanted sooner, for less money. Poland is still getting ABMs, just not the ones that Bush planned to put there.

600...that number sounds familiar for some reason...oh yeah.  The MAAG Group in South Vietnam was around 600 in 1960....
