I dunno.  You can rarely tell what's really going on just based on articles like this.  But it sounds like the kid's just an AW.  And that's probably what got him barred.

Dumont would not name the fraternity members who he said corroborate his story.

Because they don't exist, or because it would serve no purpose?  Who knows?

On Tuesday, Dumont said he is scheduled to meet with representatives from the fraternity and the university to try to reach a resolution.

He said he would not join the fraternity now if he had the chance.  "I just don't feel like it's a good place for me anymore," he said.

So what's the resolution he's seeking?  Does he know, or is this just a shiatty piece of reporting?

why the fark do people join these rapist organizations again?
no, seriously?
I never understood the draw of these groups.
Other than getting drunk, hazed and raping drunk girls.

I'd answer but people rarely believe me.

But I will say that it can vary from campus to campus.  I went to a very isolated school in the middle of nowhere where the school outnumbered the town.  For many it was your best alternative after freshman year.  It beat campus housing and options downtown were limited.

That said, it's not the case at UCF.  But greeks are pretty big there regardless.

OK, that makes some sense. Esp since I went to school in the city.
And I am certain that all frats are not the same, etc etc. But, enough are terrible that you have to worry about getting painted with the big brush.

Somehow I can't see nerd frats raping anything but a fembot.  But don't let your bigotry and ignorance about frats cloud your judgement.

Social hierarchy, particularly at smaller schools. When bros figure out that they just have to shell out a few bucks to hang with the "cool guys" (and drown in cheap skank snatch), they're all over it. Like-minded individuals gonna like-mind.

Somehow I doubt another fraternity will want to touch him after broadcasting this on the web.

Also bad for marketing jobs, when they Google his past and see this stuff. "So he didn't like something at his school and ran to the newspaper about it... Yeah, pass."

My experience is atypical, because I went to a nerd school. But at Georgia Tech, where nearly half the students are in frats, they have years' worth of study files (aka "word"). Frat members get better grades than independents, in part because of this. Also, frats don't just party; they do service work. They mostly party a lot, though. It's a way to make friends at large, impersonal universities, with all the future networking opportunities that implies.

My engineering college had a frat with the book of answers. I wonder what those guys are building now.

Considering a gay student that pledged at the same time was initiated as a brother, I have a hard time believing he got balled because he was gay. More than likely, the kid was a shiatty pledge. This little media tantrum lends credence to the idea that he's kind of a douche, and who he wants to sleep with really doesn't factor into that.

All of you Farkers are hating on a tradition you know nothing about, you all must have been pencil-necked pizza-faced geeks in the Chess Club, fraternity brothers get access to more top-shelf pussy than you could shake a stick at, and the relationships you make in the Brotherhood will last you a lifetime.

Well that last sentence is certainly true. I was in one -- really got into it my first two years, kind of drifted away as an upperclassman, though I continued to live in the house. One night a bunch of women marched by (I think it was in my junior year) chanting "real men don't rape." This is notwithstanding the fact that there were no reported incidents at our house or any other house on campus during my time there. They had made up their mind that frats were institutionally rapey and so they decided to protest. Although I walked away somewhat iffy on the whole fraternity concept, I can say that at least my house was a diverse, forward-thinking bunch, relatively speaking. Was there the occasional misogynistic joke or comment that would not have been heard in a mixed-gender setting? Yes.

I should probably add that this was the nerdiest of nerd colleges, and most of us wouldn't have gotten into a frat at any of the bigger party schools. Our group was more like what you'd see in a co-op at a big state school.

Also, this was ca. 1992, when college campuses were weird places. Did you see "PCU"? Kind of like that.

Fraternities being regarded as rapacious institutions is still alive and well. At my school (10,000 students), all freshmen pledges were subjected to a mandatory counseling session wherein the lecture hall was told not to rape. Do not kiss a girl that has been drinking, do not hit on a girl that has been drinking, and if she's had even one beer, that yes isn't consent (felt that one was a bit dismissive of women's ability to make fair judgements, but nodded my head anyway). We all went through it before someone that this really irked raised his hand. It was an upperclassman from another fraternity. He asked why, since the only three reported cases of roofie use and every other count of rape occured outside of Greek life, were we the only males in college sitting there. Seeing as it was the end of the lecture, it was dismissed somehow, but it left everyone with a bit of a sour taste in their mouth.

/Can't tell you how many times as a pledge DD I had to drive girls that were too drunk back to their homes

networking

He says on his tumblr he was 'kicked out'...but the article makes it sound like he was rejected upon applying.

But his only information that he was denied was 'a text' from someone he won't identify.

Sorta screams 'self made drama'.

Might not be, but it just comes off that way.
