During those accusations, Helmick said he has asked for mental help for several years and has not received it,

I'm not sure we should trust him, but if that's true it shows a huge problem with mental health treatment in this country.

Many times, though not every time, those who say they have requested mental health help and been denied access have been offered assistance, but they reject the assistance that is offered. Many of those patients have either personality disorders or several traits of those disorders. Granted, this is from personal experience as a mental health professional rather than clinical studies, so take what you will from what I've just said.

Any flake I'd washed up I drank the fark away. I don't know as I'll get home at all. I sewed my boots. I owe nine dollars to a whore.

they look for help and assistance up to the point where they find out what that help or assistance entails.then back off.

as in, he didn't get the help he wanted, when he found out what type of help he needed.

While Helmick was being interviewed by deputies, he said, "I'm not the normal guy that everyone thinks I am," according to the report, and said he has been accused and/or arrested five separate times on sexual based offenses.

/The sad thing is, this is very common. Sexual predators will remain so, no matter what "treatment" you give them, they will always desire whatever sick farking fantasy that drives them. Put them in jail, let them out, and they will go back to diddling kids, or raping women, whatever their sickness is. And the worse thing is, usually the crimes become worse and worse, until they end up killing someone. You can't "cure" pedophilia, or "cure" someone who enjoys raping women. All we are doing is paying to lock them up for a short time, then letting them out to do it again. Over and over, until they murder a child or a woman. Then MAYBE its life in prison, or the death penalty, which usually takes a average of 20 years before they actually are put to death. I don't know the answer to this problem, but it seems like we should be doing more.

I don't mean to defend this guy at all - there is absolutely no excuse for harming other people, but people who need mental help (or could just benefit from it a bit) might not be thinking clearly and the process of getting help can sometimes seem adversarial.  And of course if you're not well off or lack insurance your options may be very limited.  The options available to them may not suit their needs very well.  They may lack faith in a system that's screwed them over before.  They may just be barely functioning enough to get by and are scared of the process of getting help.

I don't know if this guy really asked for help and couldn't get it or if he just didn't like the type of help that was offered.  Either way, it doesn't excuse victimizing others, but if he had been treated it might not have gotten to this point and there might not be a victim.

That's sort of like the situation here in town.  There is one place that can provide mental health medication for non-insured or medicaid patients.  They're so over booked, they only take the worst of the worst.  However, to get your medication you also have to see a therapist.  There is no therapist that takes medicaid.  So, you're out of pocket for your therapy costs if you want your medication.  The therapists aren't cheap either.  The result is, the worst of the worst of the poor often can't get get properly medicated because they can't afford the therapy.  If you're stable or sort of stable, but really need help and are poor or uninsured?  There is no help.

Of course the dear governor of the great state of Alaska said no to the medicaid expansion.  Moral obligations, donchaknow.

A guy who rapes a 10 year old is not in need of Medicaid assistance, he is need of a pentobarbital/KCl cocktail in a syringe. Of course, I don't mean that literally, but I doubt the issue here is "helping" the rapist. He's making excuses for his behavior.
