America abides by the golden rule.

Considering recent polls showing how many Americans believe the sun revolves around the Earth and doubt the big bang theory I'm not necessarily sure this is a bad thing.

His point is that he is trying to present his findings, not get dragged into pointless debates about the definition of the word "oligarchy".

I've had plenty of (attempts at) debates with people that, using this topic as an example, end up going something like this:

Me: Rich people seem to have an overwhelming influence on government policy decisions.

Idiot: So you're saying it's an oligarchy?

Me: I suppose we could use that term in this context to refer specifically to the phenomenon I am describing, for the sake of clarity.

Idiot: Yeah, well South Africa used to be an oligarchy, but they had apartheid, and the US doesn't, so you're clearly wrong.

I'd be more amazed if he said it was a liberal democracy.

Money drives the political debate in the uS.  Issues important to the wealthy and to corporations are the issues that are addressed by the government and done so in a manner favorable to the wealthy and to corporate America.

Even though our collective media propaganda operations are light in nature, they are very effective.  Especially for conservative media.  That is the part in the article which talked about people voting against their interests.  The funny part is that the study concluded that even the TParty fails to influence political outcomes.

Oligarchy simply means rule by a small group of people. It doesn't quantify who those people are, what class they belong to or even how they rule. It just asserts that they are the ones in charge and there's nothing else anyone can do about it.

SquiggsIN: Party loyalists ARE THE PROBLEM, ALL OF YOU!

Dude, I'm actually quite happy with the Democratic Party's efforts the past 5 years. The real enemy is the social conservative mindset people like Obama try to work with in order to change things. It's disappointing to me that there wasn't great condemnation for their obstructionist strategies and refusal to come up with any workable alternatives. That's on us to do that. And until you can point to a better political party than the center-right Democrats, then I'm going to continue to vote for them--with no regrets.

No. The difference between Democrats and Republicans is long-term thinking. Democrats know that they have to at least throw the masses a bone now and then, so the country remains stable. Republicans are all about looting everything they can, as fast as they can, and damn the consequences.

Neither is particularly great. But as it is, we have to go with the lesser of two evils, or risk the greater taking control.
